Zambia seeks help for AIDS campaign

NEW DELHI, Nov. 20. - Dr D Kaunda, former president of Zambia, today

sought India's assistance in fighting AIDS in his country.

In a meeting with the Union health minister, Dr C P Thakur, Dr Kaunda

complimented the Indian efforts in controlling the disease. He said India was

the first developing country to manufacture some useful drugs for HIV/AIDS, and

that the medicines manufactured here were cheaper than those in developed

countries.

He also sought India's assistance in the form of medicines and publicity

material for creating awareness about the disease.

Dr Thakur explained to Dr Kaunda about the various strategies being adopted by

the government here to arrest the spread of AIDS. The health secretary, Mr Javed

Chowdhury, director, general health services, Dr S P Agarwal also attended the

meeting.
