Guest guest
ICAAP Update Welcome to ICAAP Update, a regular newsletter with all the latest news and information about the Sixth International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific. We welcome your comments about ICAAP Update, and would appreciate it if you could pass this on to anyone you know of who has an interest in the Congress, or, alternatively, if you do not wish to receive any more editions, please let us know. We hope that you find ICAAP Update interesting and informative, and we look forward to seeing you in Melbourne in October! News OVERWHELMING RESPONSE TO CALL FOR ABSTRACTS 11 May 2001 The deadline for submission of abstracts passed on the 1 May, and the response has been overwhelming, with well over two thousand abstracts being submitted. The deadline for submission of abstracts was extended until the 7th of May, to allow for last minute submissions, but this deadline has now also passed, and will not be further extended. No more abstracts will be accepted. Now the difficult task of sorting through so many submissions begins. A team of abstract reviewers from a variety of backgrounds has been assembled from throughout Asia and the Pacific to enable each of the abstracts to be graded at least twice. Following this process, the difficult task of compiling the final program can commence, with places found for presentations and posters to accommodate as many people as possible. SCHOLARSHIP TEAM SWAMPED! 11 May 2001 The scholarship team at the ICAAP Secretariat are currently battling their way out from under the huge pile of applications that have been submitted in time for the 1 May deadline. Approximately 1,800 scholarship applications have been submitted by people from throughout the Asia Pacific region. Due to this overwhelming response, we would like to encourage scholarship applicants to seek alternative sources of funding wherever possible, as the demand for scholarships outstrips the resources of the scholarship program. ON THE SUBJECT OF THINGS CULTURAL A marriage of artistic endeavours is taking place for Sixth ICAAP and within the Melbourne Fringe Festival. Somebody's Daughter theatre company and singing group Crying in Public Places are both developing works especially for ICAAP around the issue of living with HIV and the various ways HIV is transmitted. These performance works will be highlighted in the Melbourne Fringe Arts Festival, running at the same time as Sixth ICAAP. Both groups of artists are using as resource material the Blood Ties - stories written by five HIV+ women from Melbourne. This book is being published by Rex Finch of Sydney and will be launched to coincide with Sixth ICAAP, ASHM and the 3rd Conference of the International Association for the Study of Sex, Culture and Society. Somebody's Daughter theatre company is comprised of women who have experienced prison, and Crying in Public Places is an acapella singing group whose work always touches on issues of importance to the community. Their last season, SKIN, was a sell out success. We wish both groups similar success with Blood Ties.People at Sixth ICAAP A regular section profiling people working on the congress Helen Noonan, Cultural Program Coordinator, Sixth ICAAP Helen Noonan is responsible for developing the ICAAP cultural program with colleague and business partner, Croft.
