Hello Everyone,

My name is Sara.I am 27 years old.I live with my husband and daughter in an

apartment near Cleveland Ohio.My daughter,Nimet, will be nine weeks old in 6

1/2 hours. She is our first child, and we had a wonderful unassisted birth with

her here in our apartment.I never really thought I would not want to

vaccinate her, though the thought of it filled me with dread for some reason.I

guess it was the 20/20 story about the hepB shot that made me start

questioning vaccinations. If that one was not safe for all children, then what

about the others?Plus a friend told me to make sure I got the DTaP shot, not

the DTP,because the latter caused seizures in some.Whose to say the DTaP is

REALLY any safer??At this point, yes,I suppose I am going more by emotions

than anything else.Seeing those hurt by vaccines is what sways me at this

point. But I am learning a lot each day, though I have to admit sometimes I do

not know who to believe when each side gives a different facts for the same

thing.

I know that my daughter is high risk for adverse reactions and so far I have

been able to postpone the shots, though my husband wants her to have them.He

feels that since we had ours and are fine, then she should also have the

shots. That it would be unfair to leave her " unprotected " .Me,I see a beautiful

little girl with a great presonality that could change forever with a shot in

the arm.

I have to admit though that I am on the other hand scared that I won't be

able to treat her if she does get one of the childhood diseases,or that she

might suffer complications. There are no alternative doctors here, except for

chinese medicine. And I am sure my pediatrician and others will refuse to care

for her if I don't vaccinate her.Has anyone actually dealt with any of the

diseases? How can I prepare?I'd like to have medicines/treatment options on

hand just in case.

And how in the world do I convince my husband? His parents keep pushing him

about the shots.Mine aren't to bad yet.Do I need a lawyer to write up a

philos exemption?I worry about child protective services labeling no shots as

child neglect.Someone reported my homebirth(guess only a crazy woman would

birth at home),and they came saying I was suspected of child neglect then,so

I worry they will be back even though they found nothing.

Sorry I rambled

I involved my daughter's dad with my reasearch on the dangers of vaccines and

he agrees that she is better off without (also signed his name to the

exemption letter I whipped up...so he can't use " neglect " against me in the

future) but he also is a go with the flow type of guy " experts agree, etc. "

Child Protective Services has indeed charged couples with child neglect who

elected to birth at home, right here in NYC. They also use the " medical

neglect " term to charge parents who do not vaccinate their children according

to so-called law. The current fascist laws are so oppressive that some

parents are afraid to take their child to a hospital in the event of an

emergency.

Sara... welcome to this group! I'm glad you joined

so that you can have your fears, insecurities and

suspicions validated. It is difficult to make all the

right decisions regarding child rearing.

I think a lot of people use 'scare tactics' to encourage

succumbing to the mainstream idea of vaccination. It

takes a brave and astute parent to investigate the facts

and then make an informed decision.

One thing I'd like to point out in terms of your husband's

response... " we had all our shots and we turned out fine " .

True, I was vaccinated as was my husband and everyone

in my extended family. Still, vaccines may have changed

dramatically (not sure about this) since our inoculation and

besides there seem to be so many more 'required' these days...

not to mention that every individual's constitution is so different

and responds to toxins very differently.

We chose to not vaccinate our son (8 1/2 months old - never even

had a cold) and to look to alternatives like homeopathic nosodes.

If you'd like to contact me personally you can do so and I can

give you more information about this and perhaps you can even

call my naturopathic dr. here in Colorado.

I find it amazing that you had an unassisted child birth! I had

mine at home with a midwife - you are obviously very brave

and confident - don't be swayed by mere fear. As far as the

social workers charging for neglect.... that is more fear and

intimidation tactics. Perhaps you need to claim a " religious

exemption " - which seems to carry more weight than a

philosophical - although to me they are one in the same, it's

just that we're taught not to mess with one's religion.

Hang in there... and don't feel rushed or pressured to make

any haste decisions. This group will be great for your

accumulation of data and facts that will help solidify your

decision and share with your husband and family.

Welcome Sara:

Sorry for a delayed response. I understand where your husband is coming

from...that is exactly where I was until I started doing research. I

thought those who did no vaccines were to extreme....and I thought maybe

some and not others. The more I read, the angrier I became. Read the

Money mag., Mothering magazine and MANY books. I really liked the Neil

Z. books. He is a father who started doing research and ended up

writing books. He is very thorough and everything he quotes is backed up

with other sources. As far as your concern goes with if your child gets

one of the diseases if not vaccinated...I understand that fear. It is

important to understand each of the diseases. I personally took each

disease and then looked for the incidence rate at the present time, ways

of remedying it (ie. antibiotics, letting it run its course, homeopathic

nosodes, chiropractic, better eating habits (no suger), ways of not

getting the disease (ie. better hygiene, teaching my child the dangers

of sex in a nonmonogomous relationship, dangers of drugs (granted my

child is only 15 months old currently, etc). It was quite eye-opening.

By the time I got done (after a year of research) we decided not to get

her vaccinated for anything else. (My daughter had a reaction to Hep B

at 16 hours old and the doctors did NOT tell us everything.) As

Catholics, we now claim a religious exemption. I am sure you are aware

that there is an Ohio group. They certain they could provide helpful

information.

It is really important to understand that with a vaccine there is NO

guarantee that your child won't get the disease anyway.

When I started talking with all the relatives about what was happening

and our daughter's reaction, my mother remembered I had a reaction to a

vaccine. My mother-in-law remembered she had a reaction to a vaccine.

Then she came across my father-in-law's babybook in which my husband's

grandmother had recorded a reaction.....It's amazing how people started

remembering all this stuff.

Finally, I would find out what the Ohio law is and then find out your

rights and stick to them, especially if your child is not in

daycare....that way it can buy you some time to do more research...just

ask your husband to do research....

Whatever you decide make sure you are united.....that way the state

can't try to separate you and your husband while playing with your

child's health or try to take your child.

Best wishes,

Reiss in CT

P.S. One thing I do a lot with is vitamins and naturopathy. It is a lot

to do with preventions...ie. if I take my daughter to a play group then

I may give her an extra 100mg of Vt. C...if I know a cold is going

around then I give her liq. Echinacea (based on her weight w/no alcohol.

Just an additional note...In Feb. my mother visited and brought the flu.

My husband, mother and myself all got the flu (all of us were

vaccinated) but not my daughter!
