Teas, tinctures, salves, etc....is what I have been trying to study and practice. I am also studying aromatherapy. I know this is a little off topic, but I am curious to hear more about the making of tinctures, salves and the like. I just moved into our first home and we have a lovely spot for an organic herb garden. There is spearamint already growing wild throughout the yard. Are there any good 'recipe' books you can recommend? I'm also just starting to learn more about aromatherapy. I have been using my essential oils steeped in a warm bath, but would like to know other alternatives for uses. I have considered buying one of those diffuser gadgets - do any of you use this?...if so, what kind do you recommend. I'm also wondering if using essential oils is a humidifier/mister is safe. TIA :-) I know I haven't been 'around' lately - this move has been quite stressful on our family. We are just now settling - and I'm looking forward to being more involved in this mailing list. Guest guest
yes, i would love to hear more about making my own tinctures and salves... i've used aromatherapy for years, there are several uses, i've even used the essential oils of herbs in cooking if the fresh stuff wasn't available...lol i've got a simple diffuser that i bought in a health food store, it just plugs in and you put a little pad saturated with oils onto it. as it heats up, you can smell the oils... it's nice cause it clears the atmosphere of my home, and also seems to help with all the electronic irradiation sent out by the computer and kitchen gadgets... i also use essential oils (mainly chamomilla and rose) diluted in apricot kernel oil to massage my kids (aged nearly 1 and 8), they love it! and burning black pepper oil in a diffuser or oil lamp in your home will boost your immune system! one fact the drugs companies naturally ignore...lol, it works out somewhat less costly and has no side effects. regards claudia p.s. maybe we could start another list sharing recipes for natural cosmetics and natural medicines for those interested??? > I know this is a little off topic, but I am curious to hear more about the > making of tinctures, salves and the like. I have " The Green Witch Herbal " by Barbara Griggs....I believe that is the one I have which discusses making tinctures, etc. There are quite a few recipes on medicine, skin, hair, etc. The first herb book I purchased was just a simple little " herb encyclopedia " which gives descriptions and pictures on each herb and gives its medicinal properties and so forth. There are sooo many I want to buy....but unfortunately I have very limited spending. I am not sure of using EO's in a humidifier...I'll have to ask someone on that who would know. As far as other uses...you can use them for household cleaners, in lotions and creams, making potpourri, almost anything. I'm a newcomer to this area myself and can't wait to get started on a lot of this! Brightest Blessings, (MysticMoonWolf)

I have been looking for other alternatives to harsh chemicals. Ya know, motherhood is what really made me start thinking about the dangers of certain toxins, chemicals and how to avoid them. So if you have any extra time or energy - go for it!!! The Sal Suds are to be used as a household cleaner. I use it as dish and cloth detergent, clean my floors, toilets, tubs (I'm starting to sound like a cheazy advertisemt, I know ...you get the idea...It might seem a bit expensive when you look at the price, but I ended up saving money because one qt will last quite awhile if properly diluted and I use it for almost everything, although I wouldn't advise brushing your teeth with it (yuck!)
