There really is no such thing as " breastfeeding jaundice!! " Sure, breastfeeding can seem to aggravate hyperbilirubinemia but it actually helps jaundice in the end! It does this by making the baby pass her stools (which rids the body of the blood by-product) naturally. I do not have to tell you that phototherapy (billi lights) is potentially very dangerous with a myriad of side-effects. Grrrrrr. Just one more way that the medical community's misguided aid is actually hurting babies! ANyway, breastfeed, breastfeed breastfeed! Do not let anyone tell you differently. Failing to breastfeed, or even supplementing, will deny your baby what she/he deserves. ~~G BTW, sunlight naturally breaks down bilirubin and " cures " jaundice.....without the dangerous side-effects. Guest guest
Hi Barbara, I am finding this topic of jaundice and Vit K very interesting! All 3 of my kids had jaundice. Tyler, my oldest, spent time under the billi lights before leaving the hospital. Trevan had it, only very slightly. -Mae, 8 months, started getting yellow on the 2 nd day in the hospital. Her levels were taken, she was pronounced fine and home we went. She did not see a Dr. till 2 weeks, at which time she was very yellow. She had tons of blood work every day, (My hormones were raging, I was crying my eyes out every time she had the heel stick, till finally I demanded that I nurse her while it was being done, which helped some) Anyway, her levels were not going down the way the Dr. wanted and she had me stop breastfeeding for 2 days to see if it would make it go down, which it did. I was a emotional wreck not being able to nurse her. I pumped like crazy. I did not agree with this, but at the time was not online and did not have the wonderful support that I have now on these things. I was so worried as to why those levels hovered and did not go down. Finally, they dropped a little bit after the formula for 2 days, but did not completely go down. Her Dr. said, " You would get rid of her jaundice completely if you stopped breastfeeding " . I said, NO WAY! I took -Mae to my Homeopath who gave her a constitutional remedy of Graphites, I think, and within 24 hours her levels were dropping significantly! It was very traumatic for all of us. I stupidly allowed -Mae to have one of the Hep shots in the hospital and wondered if that could have contributed to her jaundice also. I questioned the Dr. about this and she was reasonable, actually called the drug company that made it and of course they said it would have NOTHING to do with newborn jaundice. I don't agree. When I brought -Mae to the hospital lab to have one of her heel sticks, the lab ladies were so nice to us and they were saying how in the last couple of years they have noticed such a increase in jaundice, that they are up in the nursery doing these tests all the time. Getting off topic, do you think Hep vaccine could have anything to do with that? Sorry this is so long, this subject is still so fresh and new to me having gone through it with dd only months ago!!!!!!!! Kerin
Guest guest
My daughter had no jaundice and did not have the vit K or Hep B at birth. All the other moms I know that home birthed or refused vit K never had problems with jaundice either. Makes you wonder! As for the link between the Hep B and jaundice, I don't know anything about it but it would not surprise me if it had contributed to the jaundice. List Owner Regarding Vitamin K and jaundice From: <campbell96@...> I was out of town when the posts on Vit K were posted so sorry if this is an old subject now! : ) The connection that was mentioned between Vit K shot and jaundice just made me wonder. When my daughter was born we hadn't seen anything about the Vit K shot so she had it done at the hospital. She seemed fairly yellow in the hospital and when I asked the visiting Ped. he didnt seem to think it was a problem. We went home on a SUnday and had a visiting nurse on Monday. My daughter was checked for her levels and I was sent to the hospital with her that evening. She immediately was put under the lights and all very traumatic for us all. She screamed and fought most of teh time we were there. What really made me mad was that teh first nurse we saw when we were put in a room with her told me it was my fault she had jaundice because I was breastfeeding her. SHe told me if I had any other kids that I should supplement otherwise they would be in the hospital with jaundice too! Oddly enough the doctors were the ones that werent happy that the nurses were pushing us to use formula. THey were totally supportive and advocating breastfeeding. Just was wondering how many of your kids had jaundice and if they were given the Vit K? Guest guest
I think the reason they are telling you to stop BF is because they can " hydrate " the baby better with formula to help. Hydration seem to be one thing that helps. I remember this from the days I worked in the NICU. I do not agree with them telling you to stop, I think that is obsurd!!! Sunlight will also do the same thing that the bililights do, from what I have heard :-). Babys get jaundice due to their premature liver and it's inability to breakdown the old red blood cells. So if a baby has a lot of bruising they may become jaundice as all that bruising is blood cells and they will need to be broken down. I worked in Respiratory and not Nursing, but that is what I remember. Hope that helps, Ann At 10:55 PM 4/1/99 -0500, you wrote: >From: Batwing30@... > >Hi Barbara, > I am finding this topic of jaundice and Vit K very interesting! All 3 of >my kids had jaundice. I just nursed, nursed, nursed him and he got better. Colostrum is a laxative that helps get the meconium out. That's really important in helping avoid jaundice and in helping it get better. Guest guest
I never knew that there might be a connection between jaundice and Vit K. Of my six children, the first four had jaundice. The fourth one born at home and without any kind of intervention also had it. My second baby had jaundice the most. He was about 3-4 weeks early, weighed 6 pounds and had no problems with his lungs. We came home together and had " rooming in " in the hospital. After about 4 days, he got pretty yellow and the pediatrician (I wish there were more like him) told me to take everything off him but his diaper and move his cradle in front of a sunny window. This was much better that taking him to the hospital and putting him under the lights! He also said this should take care of the jaundice and if it didn't, then bring him back. The wonderful sunshine did its job and that was that! My last two babies, didn't have any jaundice at all. I refused eye drops and Vit K for all but the first baby. This was also from 1977-1994. I think I have been either pregnant, breastfeeding, or both all my life!!!! Just thought I would share. Alice
Guest guest
Barbara, I can't remember if any of my three kids received the Vit K shot in the hospital. Time to check it out. To make a long story short....Three years ago my son was born jaundice. The nurse noticed it immediately. We had switched doctors about 6 months earlier and because we just don't use drs. much did not have an occasion to meet them yet. Well, the doctor ordered all tests done over the phone based on nurse assessment. He never met me or my son. His collegue (sp) discharged Logan from the Hospital. And said that they would pull his numbers again but that he was okay to go home. I thought he looked awful. He was my most traumatic delivery and his jaundice numbers spiked to over 2 times the high end of " normal " . I was worried. Even the lab nurses were concerned but the doctor relied on the lab results. Anyway, enough of that, my point is that at its worse, the doctors said it was all my fault. Amazingly enough, he claimed, my son is somehow allergic to my breastmilk and if I didn't stop I would do irrepairable damage to his system. He didn't have the balls to tell me that himself. He sent a nurse out to the waiting to announce it to everyone there. I was furious. And vulnerable. I didn't stop nursing but at 6 days old my son got a different doctor. Not suprisingly, he was totally intolerant of my desire to suspend all shots untill I felt better about them. At that point, I didn't know why but immunizations just didn't seem right. BTW, the doctor actually billed our insurance company for an office call that day! I will check into the Vit K shot. I am sure he got it if the hospital does them. Besides birth, the official cause of his jaundice was " ABO incompatibility " . It is a blood disorder that is grossly misunderstood. I would be interested in hearing if anyone thought there might be a connection between that, jaundice and Vit K.

Guest guest
My doctor is very probreastfeeding. When I went in to get my pregnancy test done she said -- " so are you gonna breastfeed? " One of the things I like about her. Anyway, my son was quite jaundiced. She said not to worry about it, and that many breastfed babies are. I think (he had a traumatic birth so I'm a little foggy about these kinds of details!) she said that breastfed babies tend to get jaundiced (something about the rate they're processing .... sorry, don't remember what?!). Anyway, she said the solution was more breastfeeding. He got quite yellow after we brought him home. She said (again) he was fine, keep nursing as often as possible, and if I'm really worried, stick him in the window. I'm not sure about the Vitamin K drops either, although I'm sure they probably got them. With all the things I was questioning, I didn't even think about that one! (Although my son was so badly bruised from his traumatic birth, it was probably a good idea anyway, if I'm understanding the other posts??) Guest guest
Here is my story about jaundice, for all it is worth, relax about it. Another advice, when the doctors do the bilirubin test ask to see the results for yourself and find out if it is within range or how far out of range it is. I always do that until I know enough to make my own decision if I want a certain treatment or not. My first born had jaundice, he didn't have vit K nor shots, but he had a problem latching on as I had inverted nipples, so he wasn't breastfeeding the first 9 days, only got as much colostrum as I could express. He was born at a birthing center with a midwife, and the nurses there were so-o-o-o helpful. They told me to just keep on trying to get him to breastfeed while I expressed milk and colustrum and gave it to him in a cup and supplemented with formula as much as he needed. And then they told me to take him out in fresh air and light, (though not in direct sunlight) and just get him to breastfeed and that would handle the jaundice. His bilirubin levels were slightly higher than the limit they have, but they let me go home with him anyway. When he had to go back for bloodwork 3 days later because of his jaundice, his bilirubin levels were actually above the limit they have for not treating, but he pediatrician at the hospital, told us the same thing, to keep on expressing milk and give it to him and take him outside in daylight. And then she spent another half hour helping with the breastfeeding problems etc. That was the most important she said. Anyway, his jaundice went away with no treatment, and 9 days later he was finally breastfeeding. My daughter didn't have vit K or shots either, and she did get a little yellow, but I didn't take her to get it checked. She was nursing and doing great, so I wasn't worried about her. I guess I was really really lucky, going to the emergency room and getting such a great pediatrician - they do exist! Best, Lone
Guest guest
Regarding jaundice... what is so interesting to me is that 99% of all jaundice could be completely eliminated if the Dr's in hospitals just left the cord attached to the placenta until it stopped pulsing (like midwives do). This allows for perfect blood exchange to the baby from the placenta and vice versa. I had my baby at home and we did this and he didn't have one bit of jaundice (and we live at 6000 ft. elevation which is supposed to be more prevelent). It amazes me that Dr.'s do practically everything to make things more mechanical, tedious and unnatural --- perhaps to bill more for repeated visits?!? Geesh. Kerin... good for you for sticking by your stance on breast- feeding! Guest guest
Kerin yes it is interesting but it does not scientificly prove that delaying the cutting of the cord reduces Jaundice. Where did you get the sum of 99%? My dd was born at home and she did not devlope jaundice and the cutting of the cord was delayed as well, however as a midwife I have seen many babies develop physiological jaundice which is just that. A newborn babies blood cells have a life of about 90 days compared to an adults which is about 120 days. It is common for babes to deveope jaundice 'cause of the breakdown of more rbc ( red blood cells). Perhaps it is the increase use of Vit K, instrumental births (increase of bruiseing increases volume of rbc to be broken down etc which may lead to the increase of jaundice) Jaundice is a symptom and every child is different. My point is that there are MANY theories but until one can back it up with research one should keep it as a theory and or opinion. Knowledge is power but we must make sure that it is current and researched based. ---------- > From: Batwing30@... > Vaccinationsonelist > Subject: Re: Regarding Vitamin K and jaundice > Date: Saturday, 3 April 1999 06:30 > > From: Batwing30@... > > In a message dated 4/2/99 10:07:30 AM Eastern Standard Time, > sherri@... writes: > > << > Regarding jaundice... what is so interesting to me is > that 99% of all jaundice could be completely eliminated > if the Dr's in hospitals just left the cord attached to the > placenta until it stopped pulsing (like midwives do). >> > I was just going to post this! Guest guest
: As soon as I read your babe was jaundiced straight away I knew something was up. that is not expected and it would need to be investigated. ABO incompatabiltiy is a real common reason for Jaundice. It is called Haemolytic jaundice and this can also happen with isoimmunization ( Rh- moms and Rh+ babes). Breast milk Jaundice does happen but is very rare and not that serious. There sometimes is a factor in the moms milk that increases the 'enterohepatic circulation " but the milk has to be tested for this to be conclusive. All this is so interesting. Thanks for sharing all the stories. ---------- > From: Junior & <cairnsj@...> > Vaccinationsonelist > Subject: Re: Regarding Vitamin K and jaundice > Date: Friday, 2 April 1999 23:46 > > From: " Junior & " <cairnsj@...> > > Barbara, > > I can't remember if any of my three kids received the Vit K shot in the > hospital. Guest guest
I had heard, and maybe Marcy can correct me, that if the placenta is held higher than the baby then the baby can in turn receive too much blood making things difficult and if the baby is accidently held higher than the placenta then the baby can lose blood to the placenta making them anemic. Has anyone heard this? Ann At 10:05 AM 4/5/99 -0400, you wrote: >From: <karen@...> > >My son had slight jaundice a few days after birth. We had no vitk or the eye >drops.
