Hey Kerin! Good to see you here!

You're absolutely right. Babies don't need a tetanus shot unless they're

" at least " out running around where they can get hurt.

For more on tetanus, alot has been said on it at this message board

http://www.healthy.net/cfm/forums/confer/threads.cfm?CID=20

We're exposed to tetanus on an everyday basis - it's just more

" concentrated " where there are animals and their feces (yes, even dogs

can carry it) You cannot get " the shot " once you have an injury - it

won't work that way. You have to get the immunoglobin in that case. An

MD at a lecture recently said that she would trust an immunoglobin even

less than a vaccine because it's made up of people's blood and you just

don't know what could be in it. She suggests homepathics (the remedy

ledum) as a preventative instead.

Improper cleaning of a wound is important in " getting it " - as well as

it can only multiply when there is no air to the area - like a deep

puncture wound.

I worried about not taking Austin in for any check-ups, but my midwife

pointed out that unles it's something that a doctor can clearly hear or

see, they aren't going to find out alot of problems either, until they

manifest in symptoms, even in a congenital problem.

The only reason I didn't take him in, virtually at all, though was 1)

the shot issue and 2) our financial situation at the time. I knew his

heart was strong and I kept careful eye to see any other problems.

Still, I would like to take the next baby in for check-ups every few

months or so. I plan on finding a " friendly " MD, or if a naturopath or

homeopath can " do the job " , I'd do that instead. If not, I trust myself

to check growth, height, hearing , vision - all the stuff, basicallly,

that they do. I know my baby better than a doc ever will in a five

minute visit and feel that I will know when something is seriously wrong

that needs medical attention. He''s just so healthy, I haven't needed

to!! :-)

well actually, tetanus is not caused by rust on a nail, but it is caused

by bactera that is found in manure. if our dd stepped on a nail we

wouldn't give her a tetanus. Dr Mendhelson talks about tetanus in his

book... how to raise a happy healthy.... you may want to check it out.

(my copy is in the car and its pouring outside) Also, we do take dd to

her well baby visits, our ped doesn't say it... but we think that he

doesn't vaccinate either. (his wife is a chiro). He never questions our

decision to not vaccinate and always says that we are doing a great

job... maybe he says that to everyone... who knows.

GRRR! We need SO badly for real md's to speak up and let people know

that they aren't " good for everyone " . I wish they would understand that

they perpetuate the myths by NOT speaking up! Maybe they can't handle

knowing that the medicine they base their life around isn't always " all

powerful " . :-)

I agree! I asked him at one of our visits if he vaccinated his kids...

he said that he realy couldn't say because that may influence our

decision and he was obligated as an MD to recommend them. I think that

the reason he doesn't say that he is agains them is because there are

people out there who don't have good hygiene, who eat a lot of junk and

live in situations that are a strain on their immune system. and maybe

for these people it is more beneficial to them to consider having the

vaccines, even though they do produce all of the side effects because

their chances of developing a infection or disease is a lot higher. This

is probably the reason why he doesn't come right out and say it. He

does have pamphlets in the rooms on the dangers of the vaccines, so at

least he has some info if parents choose to read it.

I think the reason they want to immunize as babies is because you need 3

doses to get full immunity, each being at least 6-8 weeks apart (not

completely accurate, but close). Once you get a " deep puncture wound " and

tetanus somehow gets into it you would have to get the tetanus immune

globulin if your tetanus immunizations are not up to date. The problem with

the immune globulin is that it is a " blood " product (it is antibodies taken

from a human that has had tetanus immunizations) and therefore risk Hep C

and all the other things that they screen for with blood transfusions. The

immune globulin has not been tested on Pediatrics for safety or efficacy as

stated in the manufacturers insert. I have a lot of info from Vaccine

Information Awareness on Tetanus. I could forward it to the list, but it

would be a lot of information or just forward it to individuals who would

like it.

We decided against Tetanus (and every other one), but if I were going to do

just one, it would have been tetanus. We use homeopaths so if I think that

it could be possible I give a remedy. Tetanus (to my knowledge) is not

airborne and is killed as soon as it reaches the air. It would have to get

in a sore that is deep where no air reaches it. I have been sent some

homeopathic information on tetanus, I will try to forward it to the vaccine

list if someone will tell me how. It tells of specific remedies depending

on the situation.

actually they are going directly against the APA etc., if they would speak up

and could joepordize their licenses. I would rather have them " quietly " out

ther, here those of us who need them can get their services.

Good point! I wonder how Dr. Mendelsohn did it then, or was he no longer

practicing when he wrote his books?

I guess they don't necessarily have to " shout it out " but if they have

parents they know are educated about it, it seems like they could tell

them what they think and explain their difficult position, but then at

least the parents would feel more comfortable.
