Response to my letter to MP from DoH.

Many of you will remember the letter I sent to my MP asking

many and varied questions (I have attached a copy of this again for those of

you who have not read it). To say I am appalled by the response sent by

Burstow MP is an understatement. He obviously has not taken the trouble to read

my letter, and has, instead, found the most appropriate pro forma response

(which I have received previously from the DoH on no less than three occasions,

but which they have now added a different final paragraph). I do know that

other members have received this same response, word for word, from the DoH, to

whatever query they were making.

I will be making a further appointment with my MP when they

are all back in Parliament after their long summer holiday. I need to hear from

those of you who received a response from the DoH so please will you send me a

copy, either via email sheila[at]tpauk[.]com or snail mail to Squirrel Cottage,

Ickornshaw, Cowling, Nr Keighley, BD22 0DH, North Yorkshire please and I will

take this matter further.

Thank you for your letter of 20th July to Langley on

behalf of your constituent Mrs Sheila …… about the treatment

of patient's with thyroid deficiencies.

I appreciate Mrs. 's general concerns about the care

of patients with thyroid deficiencies. However, it is the responsibility of

health professionals to decide on the most appropriate medication for those

with an underactive thyroid. If a person has any concerns over the drug they

are prescribed, they need to raise these concerns with their GP{ or consultant.

As you may be aware, the National Service Framework (NSF) for long term

conditions was published in March 2005. Whilst the NSF is principally

concerned with improving the standard and quality of services for people with

neurological conditions, many elements are relevant to people with other long

term conditions, For example:

prompt diagnosis

·

providing information and support for

individuals and their carers

·

person centred care and choice

·

care planning and integrated service provision

involving different agencies

·

rehabilitation and support is the community

·

managing long term conditions effectively when

in hospital.

The Department of Health has worked with a range of key

stake-holders to identify and develop support and practical tools that can help

local services and organisations to deliver the NSF. As part of this work,

Regional Clinical Champions have been identified who will work with local NHS

organisations and patient groups to promote best practice and support

implementation of the NSF.

More generally, your constituent may be interested to know

that our White Paper (Equity and Excellence; Liberating the NHS) states our

vision for shared decision making to become the norm. e want patients to have

access to the information they want, so that they can make informed choices

about their care. Our ambition is to achieve healthcare outcomes that are among

the best in the world and we believe this can only be realised by patients

being fully involved in their care.
