lee, it ain't the size of the gland, it's how ya use it that

counts. Wait for the results of the thyroid function panel before

you borrow trouble.

hospital so was probabally about 4 or 5 when it finally cleared up.

Hi Marta,

In typical " me " fashion I go looking stuff up. One interesting thing

I found - a symptom of hypothyroidism is breast milk production -

guess that is why I am still leaking milk after weaning my daughter

nearly 4 years ago. I have blamed dry skin, brittle hair, hair loss

and being cold on the DS - but couldn't blame the leaky boob syndrome

on the DS!! LOL!!

hugs to you skinny minny, cindy lee

Anyway, wondered if any of ya'll have this

> problem and if so what is the treatment? and has it been

successful?

lee,

I had lost 105 lbs. back in 1985 with no explanantion. Found out I

had a goiter and extreme hyperthyroidism (Grave's disease--named for

the guy who discovered it, not because it send you there...lol).

After refusing treatment for 3 years (cuz I liked being 165 lbs!!!)

in 1988 they gave me I-131 (radioactive iodine) in pill form and my

thyroid levels went down to almost normal (T4 started at 36 and went

down to about 12) and then...I gained 140 lbs. Put on therapeutic

dose of synthroid. Fast forward to 1993...went thru some major

stress and started losing weight again. Lost 64 pounds and told my

doc something was wrong again. They said it's impossible for a

thyroid to grow back. <buzz> Wrong answer! Mine had! I refused

treatment because didn't want to gain weight again. But after major

life-changing and eye-opening events, I went for my thyroid scan and

they gave me a double dose of liquid I-131 this time and it worked I

guess. Oh, and did I mention, I gained 140 lbs. AGAIN!??!! Enter

in wls and that's how I got to where I am today. Now the synthroid

increases every so often, but I'm supposedly normal now.

HTH

Hugs,

Laurie

Hi All,

My other half went to see an endo this morning. He was referred by his GP who

knew he was taking NDT and T3. He was told by the endo that he had a rather

large thyroid. He had some blood tests and was told to go back in three weeks.

He did not tell the endo that he is taking NDT and T3. He did not take any meds

24 hours previously. I think it is going to be difficult when he sees the endo

the next time. Will the endo be able to see that he has hypothyroidism even

though he is taking meds?

He has four relatives - including his grandmother who has thyroid cancer.

When he went to see Dr P early 2009 he was diagnosed on his symptoms. Dr P was

so sure my other half had hypot that he did not suggest any tests.

He went to see his GP ages ago and was told to have a blood test. He stoped his

meds for three weeks but felt so ill he decided that he could not wait any

longer and had blood drawn. The result of that test was TSH 2.5 - range 0.05 to

5.50.

He is in a difficult position - will the endo be able to diagnose him if he is

taking NDT and T3 - will he have to stop the meds again (which I don't think he

will be able to do) - will the fact that he has a large thyroid be enough for

diagnosis?

I did tell him years ago to see his GP but he refused - it was only when I saw

Dr P and suggested he go too that he agreed.

,

Why is he bothering with this endo if the endo is rubbish? Isn't there another

endo in the area with a specialism in thyroid? I'd have a look at all the local

hospitals in your area, get the names of the endo's in each one, and then check

them out on the GMC medical practitioner list, to see what their specialism is.

Then ask your doc for a referral to the one which looks like they might know

something.

Seeing an endo that is clueless is just a waste of your time.

> I don't think it would be a good idea for me to go with my O/H to see the endo

next time because he is the same endo - Dr R - I am complaining about - the one

who said I did not have hypothyroidism -

He knew he was your husband , and proving to him just what

a wonderful endocrinologist he really is. I would be VERY tempted to go in with

him next time and just before you leave, turn round and ask him if he had time

to read the questions you had sent him and would he drop you a line to give you

the answers. Thank him, of course, for treating your husband so well - positive

strokes……

Luv - Sheila

Hi Sheila,

The strange thing was that my O/H thought that the endo seemed ok with him. He

wasn't arrogant, asked lots of questions and seemed quite chatty. The endo said

that he was willing to give everyone the benefit of the doubt. (which is a load

of rubbish - as he did not give me any benefit of any doubt whatsoever).

I am wondering if the endo is a chauvanist as well as a prat.

We will wait and see what happens at the next consultation. My O/H has not told

Dr R that he has seen Dr P and not said that he is taking NDT.

I am wondering if I did the wrong thing by initially showing him the results of

the Genova test and telling him that I saw Dr P who diagnosed me as being

hypothyroid.

I sent another letter to the Hospital Complaints dept., on the 2nd March - if

this one is not answered to my satisfaction, I will get in touch with ICAS.

Hi Sheila,

I am also very tempted - but am sure Dr R would not recognise me as I am looking

- and feeling - so much better than when I first saw him.

On the other hand, I would not want to compromise my O/H's chances of being

diagnosed.

I will see how I feel in mid May when the next appointment is.

My O/H is SIA licenced (security) so he would be able to protect Dr R if I go

for his throat :)
