Send a letter to your GP listing your symptoms and SIGNS - check

these in our web site www.tpa-uk.org.uk

under 'hypothyroidism'. List your basal temperature before getting out of bed

for 4 or 5 days. List any members of your family with a thyroid or autoimmune

disease.

In the letter, request specifically blood tests for ferritin,

vitamin B12, vitamin D3, folate, magnesium copper and zinc as I cannot see

these have been done previously. Ask for the results to be given to you to

include the reference range for each of the tests done too. If any of these are

low in the reference range, you need to supplement whatever you are low in

because your thyroid hormone cannot be fully utilised by the cells in your body

and brain.

Ask for your adrenals to be tested too in the same letter, as

the symptoms in your list do suggest you could be suffering with low adrenal

reserve. The NHS will only cheque you’re your adrenals to see whether you

are suffering with one of the two extreme diseases - either 's disease (very

low or not cortisol secretion) or Cushing's Syndrome (too high a level of

cortisol secretion). If your results show you are not suffering with either of

these conditions, you will be told you do not have an adrenal problem - but -

they do not check for any shades of grey between the two, which is the

condition we are concerned about, simply called low adrenal reserve. You can be

tested for this privately through Genova Diagnostics and if your results are

clear from the hospital, I would highly recommend you get this test done. This

is a 24 h our salivary adrenal profile which checks your levels of cortisol and

DHEA at four specific times during the day.

Ask for a referral to an endocrinologist who specialises in

thyroid disease.

Last, ask for your letter of requests to be placed into your

medical notes and keep a copy of your letter yourself too.

Luv - Sheila
