In such cases Stevie, especially when a patient is unconscious,

they give tablets via rectal administration. We used to have to do that when I

was a nurse, as it was the only way (apart from injections) to get drugs into

the patient. Giving thyroxine in such a way I should imagine would work well.

For tablets to be given sublingually, they have to be manufactured in such a

way that they easily dissolve direct into the capillaries under the tongue, and

levothyroxine is not designed in such a way as it has a hard coat.

I felt concerned for all of us in case we got hospitalized, and un able to take

them, i have made my girls aware.

It made me think of my Mum she had a big stroke and couldn't swallow in

hospital, so they didnt give them to her. I can remember the doc doing rounds

and telling the nurse that her thyroid wasn't good, nurse said what do you

expect she cant swallow. I didnt have the knowledge i have now, i would have

crushed them and put it under her tongue, she never made a good recovery,

needed 24hr care for 10yrs, it just makes you wonder if it could have been

different.

Hello Sheila,

Thankyou for yor reply,

I wonder why they didnt do the things you suggest.

Mum certainley went on a downward spiaral on a daily basis, it was quite

shocking. She was in hospital 3 mths

Whats been happening to me just seemed to bring all that flooding back, in 1

week without my meds my tsh dropped to a 42 and was checked a month before and

it was a 3, it taken me 4 mnths to get to 10.

What chance did she have for a good recovery, i suppose it made me kinda sad.

She was an amazing woman. That vital medication for brain and coordination

I am now trying to take it forward positivley and making sure it dosent happen

to anyone else, knowledge is everything.

love Stevie
