This month the American Autoimmune Related Diseases Association (AARDA) launched its 2009 Annual Appeal Campaign, Solve the Puzzle of Autoimmune Diseases. Each year during the holidays we reach out to our friends and supporters seeking your help in making our shared goal of eradicating autoimmune disease a reality.

Today, we are on the cusp of discovery. For the first time in 50 years, new therapies are being discovered and brought to market to treat several autoimmune diseases. More and more, researchers are beginning to take an interest in autoimmunity; and in the United States Congress, H.R. 2084 The Prevention, Awareness, and Research of Autoimmune Diseases Act of 2009 (PARAiD) Bill is beginning to gain traction. We must keep the momentum going to fund new research into autoimmune disease, advocate for our cause in the halls of Congress, and educate patients on their role in getting the very best care for themselves. · Autoimmunity Research: By investigating the underlying cause of all autoimmune diseases, autoimmunity, we will one day find a cure. Autoimmunity is the process by which the body turns on itself; and rather than simply attacking and killing viruses and bacteria, it attacks ones own healthy cells and tissues, causing organ damage and sometimes death.

o What AARDA Does: We fund crosscutting autoimmunity research, host national and international scientific meetings on autoimmunity and autoimmune diseases, work with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) through the Autoimmune Diseases Coordinating Committee ( ADCC ), whose development was heavily advocated for by AARDA. The committee allows for collaboration among the nations brightest researchers to share information and breakthroughs in the area of autoimmune disease.

· Awareness Campaigns: Fewer than 13 percent of Americans can name an autoimmune disease, and studies have shown that it takes four years and more than four doctors before an autoimmune disease patient receives an accurate diagnosis and begins receiving proper treatment. Additionally, few Americans realize that autoimmune diseases tend to cluster in families, meaning that if a family member has an autoimmune disease, you may be at risk for developing an autoimmune disease yourself.

o What AARDA Does: We launched national radio, television, print, and social media public awareness campaigns, What Every American Needs to Know About Autoimmune Disease and Men Get Autoimmune Diseases, Too, as well as What Are Autoimmune Diseases. We advocate for additional autoimmune disease awareness funding from congress and have initiated a bill, H.R. 2084, which would infuse millions of additional dollars to autoimmune diseases research and awareness programs.

In addition to the work AARDA does in research and awareness we are very involved with providing patients with autoimmune disease education, services, and resources to enhance their quality of life. Still, with all that AARDA has done in the past so much more is needed.
