High TSH, low Free T4

Can someone explain a little more about what I am seeing on my brother's blood

test?

T3 total 111.1 (range 40-80)

Free T3 uptake 29.5 (range 25-40)

TSH 13.799 (range .350-5.50)

T4 5.2 (range 5-13)

Free T4 .7 (range .8-1.8)

He started taking Lugol's about 4 months ago and his TSH shot up. It is my

understanding that this occurs for about 6 months. Does his taking of the

iodine explain the low Free T4? Prior blood tests have all been in normal

ranges.

Hi william, Has you brother got a diagnosis of hyothyroidism? if not then now is the time to go to the GP and get one- with these results GP should at least do NHS tests. TSh is very high- even higher than the top of the range. FT4 is below range and T3 is near bottom of range- ie he is converting what little T4 there is. At these levels he will probably have a mulitiude of symptoms - see files. > thyroid treatment > From: greenamyer@...> Date: Fri, 27 Aug 2010 12:56:54 +0000> Subject: High TSH, low Free T4> > Can someone explain a little more about what I am seeing on my brother's blood test?> > T3 total 111.1 (range 40-80)> Free T3 uptake 29.5 (range 25-40)> TSH 13.799 (range .350-5.50)> T4 5.2 (range 5-13)> Free T4 .7 (range .8-1.8)> > He started taking Lugol's about 4 months ago and his TSH shot up. Brother said that doctor considered medication but he wants to play out the

iodine to a full 6 months first. According to him, TSH should drop after 6

months. If the iodine is causing the depression of the Free T4, one would

assume that it would come up after 6 months. I am not sure where he is getting

his information since he is not big on documenting things. I try to help him

out in that department. As to the symptoms, he doesn't have a long list of

symptoms. Only a couple and they could be as much from just growing old as

hypothyroidism. I was just trying to get some more information from people who

might have experienced a similar condition. His TSH has popped up a little a

couple times in the past (according to the records he gets copies of) but the

Free T4 has never been out of range until the iodine.

Hi , That doesn't make so much sense as T4 is made of iodine( four atoms) so it's presence would increase the Ft4 if everything is working properly, not decrease it. Symptoms because of age- how old is he? Many folk over 70 have raised TSH, so that may be 'normal' but it isn't optimal and older folk have just as much right to as good a quality of life as can be achieved. > thyroid treatment > From: greenamyer@...> Date: Sat, 28 Aug 2010 12:46:57 +0000> Subject: Re: High TSH, low Free T4> > Brother said that doctor considered medication but he wants to play out the iodine to a full 6 months first. Brother is 58. TSH has been up and down in the past according to records but

usually just out of range. Most of the time it is back within range on the next

test. Since starting iodine, TSH went up and stayed up. He doesn't really get

a lot from the doctor on this. Just the basic stuff. Symptom, give them a pill

to fix it. Better to find out the cause and fix the cause. 6 months on Iodine

was the point where TSH drops according to information I have found. That would

occur for my brother in 2 more months. Doctor ordered another thyroid panel in

3 months. I just wanted to see if anyone had experienced or herd of FT4

dropping when iodine was taken.

Not sure whether the attached document would help , but

read Dr Peatfield's speech he gave at our last TPA dinner and meeting in North

Yorkshire last April.
