Hi,

With steroids it's all about dosages and time spans (and body weight).... Even though 25 mg HC does not sound a lot, once the body gets used to having HC supplemented, the eventual weaning off can be tricky. If you have taken this dosage for some considerable time (months or years) you will have to think in terms of months - not days - to wean yourself off very gradually. I do, however, agree with - if your body is already struggling with a drop of 2.5 mg HC, you are probably "not ready" to come off just yet. How long have you been on it and what is your reason for wanting to come off ?

best wishes,

I have reduced my HC down to only 5mg a day taken in the morning, been on 5 for quite a while now so will soon stop, I can honestly say its been a breeze, no probs at all which makes me wonder if I ever needed it at all because my adrenals seemed to have coped well coming off it which goes to show HC doesnt shut the adrenals down and they are capable of picking up on their own, of course some people may be in a worse situation than me

Has anyone gone through coming off HC.I am on 25mg and want to start. I have decreased by 2.5mg today and i can feel the difference about 1 1/2h's after taking my morning dose (12.5mg as opposed to a normal 15mg).Are these feelings normal and is the adrenal likley to accomodate over the next few days? Or is this a sign i need the cortisol being given?I may have to stick with it for a few days and see how i get on, but i thought i would ask what others have found.

Just wanted to add though I have reduced over months not days, I like you was on 25 or sometimes 30 a day, also I believe the morning dose should not be more that 10mg a day

Well i feel ok really, but i can tell there is a slight difference.

I reduced down from 30 to 25mg 3 weeks ago and couldnt tell any different.

i have been on the HC since sep 09 and i am finally getting well. It hasnt been

an adrenal problem, rather getting the right amount of thyroid into me. I am

now doing synthetic T4 and T3 and never been better. It seems i need a lower T4

amount and higher T3 amount than when on natural.

Temps are very stable in the day at 36.9-37C so this indicates adrenals are

good.

I am hoping the adrenals are saying they notice a difference and will self

correct in a few days time. I will see how i go on.

Hi Marsaday, I am still very slowly coming off prednisone which can be even more difficult. You need to reduce dose by small amounts leaving it at least a month before considering wether to reduce again. As Hc is much more quick acting than pred you will obviously notice drops in dose more quickly and it may take a long time for your body to take up the slack. You could try to reduce you last dose of the day instead as it is normal for cortisol to be high during the morning and reduce during the course of the day to a low around midnight which may feel a bit more 'comfortable'. > thyroid treatment > From: marsaday1971@...> Date: Wed, 2 Jun 2010 09:19:26 +0000> Subject: Reducing HC> > Has anyone gone through coming off HC.> > I am on 25mg and want to start. Thanks

I will knock 2.5mg off the lunchtime dose. i only do 2 doses in the day - 15

and 10. so this will be 15 and 7,5mg now.

I still feel a bit off, but i am going to try and live with it and see if the

body adjusts along with the HC change.

I really hope so.

Personally, as you have just changed your thyroid replacement to

all synthetic, I would wait until I was properly settled on that before

starting to decrease your HC . If things go wrong, you are not going to

know whether it is the decrease in your HC or your change over to the

synthetics.

True, but i was very balanced and i thought i can move forward again. my temps

are still good today, but i do feel a bit off. however i still feel good taking

the new synthetics. a strange one really. feel good, but a tiny bit not so

good. i want to see if the body will react normally to a decrease in 2.5mg hc

and so will try and stick with it for a few days. this change i experience is

def. down to the cortisol change though.

any decrease i do will probably be 2.5mg per month, so giving plenty of time.
