Guest guest
Carole, you should know that there are many associated conditions that go along with being hypothyroid and I have attached a document that you should read so you understand exactly why your levothyroxine might not be working. The most obvious cause for a lot of people is that they may have low adrenal reserve (this is not 's disease where the adrenals are secreting very little or no cortisol). NHS doctors only recognise 's or Cushing's syndrome (where the adrenals are excreting too much cortisol) - so they believe there are no shades of grey between the two. If you have low adrenal reserve, no amount of thyroid hormone replacement is going to be able to work until your adrenals are boosted (Read the information in our FILES section under the folder 'Adrenals'). You may also be suffering with systemic candidiasis which stops the thyroid hormone from working. If you go to our FILES section, look under the folder entitled 'Medical Questionnaires' and you should answer all the questions in the Adrenal questionnaire, the Candida questionnaire and the Magnesium questionnaire and let us know how you score. It would be best if you did the 24 hour salivary adrenal profile available from Genova Diagnostics to check out how much cortisol and DHEA your adrenals are secreting at four specific times during the day (details of discounts TPA members can get is again in our FILES section under the folder entitled 'Discounts') If , from your answers, it looks like you might have a candida problem, you can also get tested to see whether you have candida antibodies by Genova too. For your palpitations, try taking 500mgs magnesium and see if this helps. If you look on the Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) in your packet of levothyroxine, it mentions there that you should tell your doctor before taking these tablets if you have an adrenal problem - and I bet if you ask your doctor, he won't even know. It can cause an adrenal crisis if you take thyroid hormone replacement with failing adrenals. Also, ask your GP to do the following blood tests: ferritin, vitamin B12, vitamin D3, magnesium, folate, copper and zinc. If any of these are low in the reference range, once again, no amount of thyroid hormone is going to work until these are boosted. Once you get your results, post the figures here for each of the tests together with the reference and we will help with the interpretation. Sadly, many doctors believe that if your results come back ANYWHERE within the range, that means you are 'normal'. How wrong can they be? Also, remember that thyroxine (T4) is a mainly INACTIVE hormone and it has to convert through the kidneys, liver, skin, brain and many other thyroid hormone receptors throughout the body to the ACTIVE thyroid Triiodothyronine (T3). It is T3 that makes every cell in your body and brain function. What doctors fail to realise is that many of us are unable to convert for many different reasons, and the Thyroxine lies in the blood doing nothing, but giving us symptoms of toxicity. For those people, they need T3 either adding to their T4, of T3 alone. Talk to your doctor about this and ask for a free T3 test to check out the level. Free T3 results should be in the upper third of the reference range. Your increased heart-rate when taking the thyroxine is an indication that it is not being converted to the active T3, but first, you need to get the above tests done as a process of elimination. Once these are treated, the thyroid hormone starts to work properly. it might be better to write all of this down and give the letter to your doctor and ask her to place it into your medical notes. Give her a list of: · your symptoms (check yours against those in our web site www.tpa-uk.org.uk · all the blood tests mentioned above, giving the reasons why you are asking for these tests specifically. · …and ask for a referral to an endocrinologist who has a specialty in thyroid disease. · …and last, don't forget to ask for your requests to be placed into your medical notes. Hope this helps Luv - Sheila Im taking 50mcg levothyroxine daily. My tsh settled at 0.1 (0.3-3.0) T4 middle of range, and has stayed there a year or so, drs happy with it, but Im not and want to do something about it. I never feel well and heartrates always in the high 90s, but when I stopped the med for a bit, it dropped down to 70 bpm and I felt so much better as well. I went back on again and up went the heart too. I don't want to be feeling ill all the time just because docs are happy with it, Ive booked to see her, and want to get your advice on what might be the best way to handle the problem. should I suggest trying 37.5 one day and 50 next, or totally stop a few days and back on a few days, or even change daily according to heartrate? Any thoughts for me please? thanks Carole No virus found in this incoming message. Hope you don't mind but I'm going to use a lot of your text to put on my blog to help my friends there. I will of course give you credit. :-) My doctor wanted to make sure that my adrenals were fit before moving forward on my thyroid. So I did the saliva test and sure enough first thing in the morning and around 3pm my adrenals were having a rough time. My neighbor reads live blood and noticed that I had yeast in my system (Candida) and my doctor began treatment for that as well. I was also low in Vitamin D. Lot of pills but I'm starting to feel better. Another test that my doctor wants me to take is a Tox screening, it's an all day urine test. Thanks again Sheila! Guest guest
Hi Sheila, my levo is working because its making me very slightly hyper with tsh 0.1 which is why I thought I should be looking to cut the dose not raise it. Thanks for the reply though Carole > > Carole, you should know that there are many associated conditions that go > along with being hypothyroid and I have attached a document that you should > read so you understand exactly why your levothyroxine might not be working. >

Guest guest
How can you say your levo is working when you still have symptoms? The reason why we take any medication is to reduce of=r remove symptoms!! Guest guest
If levothyroxine isn't getting properly converted to the active hormone T3, you will get symptoms of toxicity because it lies in the blood with nowhere to go. Are you getting symptoms of hyPERthyroidism, or do you just believe you are going hyPERthyroid because your TSH is showing a suppressed level of 0.1? I am confused. Guest guest
Yes, but not everything. Just leave a small portion of what you are responding to. I see many other forums where writers leave whatever has been written previously attached to their message, and it really causes frustration for many of us who have opted to receive a Daily Digest, where we get up to 25 messages in just one email, or who opted to read direct from the forum web site. It is not fair to make them have to scroll, scroll and scroll again to get to the next message, and also, it makes the message board so untidy. We try to get new members 'trained' to do this right from the start, and keep occasionally having to send out reminders when some forget, but you will soon get the hang of it. Luv - Sheila Sorry I don't understand what you mean Sheila. Do you want me to remove everything below the post I'm responding to?? Guest guest
Have you been tested to see whether you have antibodies to your thyroid Carole? How long a period did it take for the levothyroxine to reduce your TSH from 89.9 to 0.1? This is important! Luv - Sheila I can say the levo is working because it took my tsh from 89.9 to 0.1 it couldnt do that if it wasnt working. The symptoms were from hypo but are from hyper now, so it makes sense to ask for my meds to be reduced. At least it seems that way to me.
