Hi dear forum dwellers,

Does anyone out there ever suffer from any visual disturbances due to thyroid

related stuff? I expect the visual disturbances I am currently experiencing are

related to neurological symptoms (pins/needles/numbness in face and hands etc)

that I currently have, but I thought I would see if any other my fellow HypoT

and Hashimoto folk have visual problems too, just in case I am assuming it is

neurological (perhaps migraine related???) when it might actually be related to

the thyroid.

Since I suffered from an intermittent migraine and constant headache for about 7

or 8 days (I've only just recovered from it), I now see a constant 'tv static'

like image with my eyes open and shut. I suspect it is migraine aura, but I am

experiencing it with no pain now. A darkened room no longer seems dark to me

because I see something that I can only describe as a translucent type of tv

static, the type you see when a TV channel is not on the station properly. I

found a website that gives you an idea of what I am currently experiencing, but

you need to change some of the settings on the site to see roughly what I am

seeing. Click on background 5. Move the scale for 'snow density' to 18 (click

on the orange rectangle and hold your mouse down to move it). Change the

'flicker' rate to 2 by using the same method. It isn't exactly what it looks

like for me because the white bits that I can see are more irregular and

slightly larger than in the simulation, but it gives you a good idea of what I

am experiencing. It is very weird!

As I mentioned before, I expect that it is some form of migraine aura, but it is

a bit unusual that it is happening for so long and that it is now happening in

the absence of a headache. Could it be related to thyroid in any way? Does

anybody know?

Hi

P - if you go to our web site www.tpa-uk.org.uk and click on 'Symptoms' you

will see that we list the following as being associated with hypothyroidism:

Visual disturbances:

???? Poor

focusing

???? Double

vision

???? Dry eyes

???? Gritty eyes

???? Blurred

vision

It does sound as if the image you are experiencing could

be a migraine aura - I sometimes experience these but don't get a migraine or

even a headache. Your 'aura' appears to be different to mine though, mine shows

all the colours of the rainbow in flashing zig zags around the outer corner of

my eye, which I see with eyes closed or open. It doesn't last long. Have you

asked an Ophthalmologist if he could help you find an answer.

Hi Sheila and all,

I can relate to the 'poor focusing' but my other visual symptoms on the website

are different. The flashing zig zag thing that you experience appears to be a

classic migraine aura that I've read about, but you don't even experience

headache nor migraine so that is pretty strange ?!?!

Yesterday someone suggested that I see an ophthalmologist, so I made an appt

straight away. I've seen an optometrist and they couldn't find anything wrong,

but I will take it further and see the ophthalmologist. The earliest that I can

see the ophth... is late May but I have my neurologist appt in early May so I

can discuss it with the neurologist first. The specialists are so booked up

around here and there is a lengthy waiting list.

It seems as though others on the forum have experienced visual disturbances too,

so that is interesting. Goodness knows what is going on in this body of mine!
