Hi there,

My husband has begun to come around to pushing our GP for T3....he is desperate

as his quality of life is pretty non-existant right now

He is now taking 125mcg thyroxine and has been since January...and his most

recent results are

June 5th

TSH 0.64 range 0.3-5.0

T4 20 range 9-25

Vit B12 373 ng/L range 220-700

July 23rd

TSH 2.1 range 0.3-5.0

T4's not done

T3's not done since April when they were 5.1 and T4's 21 and TSH 2.2

He is taking Tetracycline and Nystatin at the moment to try to kill candida. He

has so many muscle and joint pains, stomach ache/IBS dizziness, foggy head, mood

swings, ....basically feels terrible

What would you advise?

Dear Ruth

Has your husband done the 24 hour salivary adrenal profile to

see where his cortisol and DHEA are at four specific times during the day? If

not, please encourage him to do this. Read about the thyroid/adrenal connection

in our web site www.tpa-uk.org.uk under

'Hypothyroidism' and then in the drop down Menu, click 'Associated Conditions'

and on the page that opens, click the Adrenal item at the top of the page. The

symptoms you mention could all be caused by low adrenal reserve and he needs to

eliminate this as a possible cause.

For many people (and I hope his GP knows about this- but he may

not), people can take levothyroxine for years, and then for some inexplicable

reason, it suddenly stops working and it is unable to convert through the

thyroid hormone receptors to the active thyroid hormone T3.

Where does the GP get the idea that doing only his TSH test will

tell him what your husband's thyroid status is. Even the RCP and BTA say that

both TSH and a measure of fT4 should be tested. He can get his FT3 tested

privately through Lab21 http://www.lab21.com/healthcare/thyroid.php

If the GP refuses him T3, then he must press for a referral to

an endocrinologist who will prescribe it - I have a list of such doctors if

this will help. Let me know - I may have already sent it to you in the past.

Is your husband taking any form of B12 yet, and if so, how much.

If not, get him Solgar 1000mcgs sublingual tablets. His B12 result is one that

should be at the top of the range - again, his GP has probably told him his

result is 'normal'.

Luv - Sheila

I am a little puzzled as to why he is taking tetracycline for candida. I thought tetracycline was a broad spectrum anti-biotic, and anti-biotics encourage candida to grow.

Does he keep away from sugar and starches, which also feed candida?

It could well be the candida which is causing the thyroid medication not to work properly.

In the files section you will find how to start T3.

I have been on T3 and Thyroxine, on Armour, on Erfa and on a combination of Erfa and T3. When my dose is right I am fine on any of those. They all work for me. So much so it is like black and white. Without some T3 - very ill, with some T3 - very well. As soon as I have the tiniest dose of T3 my IBS symptoms clear up completely. It is the first symptom to come back and the first to go. The second is hair loss, also almost immediately. The third is fatigue but that seems to come on more gradually and go more gradually too. However I do not have Hashimoto's.

I have tried T4 and it worked initially and then stopped working, then same was

for natural hormones. I now take T4 and T3 and am doing better than ever.

I take 112.5mg T4 and 37.5mg T3.

My recent bloods are FT4 12 and FT3 7.7. The T4 is nice and low (shows the T4

is being used up and the T3 is high (converting well).

So I would say your hubby needs to lower T4 to 100 max and then add in 1/2 a

tablet of T3 initially and just see how he goes on. The UK T3 is in 20mg

tablets and so i reckon he could be taking 3 x 1/2 tablets per day eventually.

However, it is all based on how you feel and then get blood to back this up.

Hi Sheila

Yes my husband did have the 24 hr adrenal test in early June and here are the

results

Cortisol Levels

sample 1-- 12.7 inside range..range 12-22

sample 2-- 4.3 outside range...range 5.0-9.0

sample 3-- 4.0 inside range...range 3.0-7.0

sample 4 --3.2 outside range..1.0-3.0

TOTAL DAILY CORTISOL - 24.2....inside range , range 21-41

DHEA levels

sample 2-- 0.55 inside range 0.5- 1.0

sample 3 -- 0.89 inside range 0.5- 1.0

DHEA : Cortisol Ratio -- 2.98 inside range...1.0-4.0

He took NAE for a weeek with no thyroxine and he felt tired but ok, then

reintroduced the thyroxine and for a week felt great but then began to

deteriorate and as the NAE was the newest thing we stopped that

He has two days left of tetracycline which the Dr prescribed along with Nyststin

to try to attack any stomsch candida...he has been on B12 but stopped at the

moment

What do you think?

If I was your husband, I would reintroduce the NAE - unless his

adrenals are supported, it is not likely that any thyroid hormone will work. He

does seem to start and stop medications without giving them time to work - as

you say he has now stopped the B12 also. His B12 result should be right at the

top of the reference range. Again until his B12 is increased, his thyroid

hormone can't get into the cells. We need to tell everybody who has continuing

symptoms to check that all the associated conditions that go along with being

hypothyroid MUST be checked to see where their levels lie, and if low, MUST be

treated. I would be getting back to NAE and B12, and anything else he is low in.

ONLY then will he start to feel better.

Hi ruth, With those low cortisol tests I'm not surprised your OH felt better with NAE. I'm sure the crash came as he 'ran out' of the T4 that he was at last able to use. I'd have thought that an increase in T4 would have been better than dropping the NAE As always we have only a partial picture as there is only the one FT3- he may have more of an adrenal issue than thyroid.I see he is tacking candida, but how about iron zinc and selenium- these are all vital for proper thyroid function. > thyroid treatment > From: ruthsinhal@...> Date: Wed, 4 Aug 2010 09:42:55 +0000> Subject: Re: How to add T3 to thyroxine?> > Hi Sheila> Yes my husband did have the 24 hr adrenal test in early June and here are the results> Cortisol Levels> sample 1-- 12.7 inside range..range 12-22> sample 2-- 4.3 outside range...range 5.0-9.0> sample 3-- 4.0 inside range...range 3.0-7.0> sample 4 --3.2 outside range..1.0-3.0> TOTAL DAILY CORTISOL - 24.2....inside range , range 21-41> > DHEA levels> sample 2-- 0.55 inside range 0.5- 1.0> sample 3 -- 0.89 inside range 0.5- 1.0> > DHEA : Cortisol Ratio -- 2.98 inside range...1.0-4.0> > He took NAE for a weeek with no thyroxine and he felt tired but ok, then reintroduced the thyroxine and for a week felt great but then began to deteriorate and as the NAE was the newest thing we stopped that> He has two days left of tetracycline which the Dr prescribed along with Nyststin to try to attack any stomsch candida...he has been on B12 but stopped at the moment> What do you think?> Ruth> > > Has your husband done the 24 hour salivary adrenal profile > > Luv - Sheila> > > Hi there, > > My husband has begun to come around to pushing our GP for T3....he is> > desperate as his quality of life is pretty non-existant right now> > He is now taking 125mcg thyroxine and has been since January...and his most> > recent results are> > > > June 5th > > TSH 0.64 range 0.3-5.0> > T4 20 range 9-25> > Vit B12 373 ng/L range 220-700> > > > July 23rd> > TSH 2.1 range 0.3-5.0> > T4's not done> > > > T3's not done since April when they were 5.1 and T4's 21 and TSH 2.2> > > > He is taking Tetracycline and Nystatin at the moment to try to kill candida.> > > Ruth> > > > > ------------------------------------> > TPA is not medically qualified.
