Guest guest
Letter from Cipla to National AIDS Control Organisation offering Nevirapine donations November 7, 2000 The Project Director National AIDS Control Organisation Ministry of Health & Family Welfare Room No. A-344, Nirman Bhavan New Delhi-110 011 Dear Sir, Nevirapine, the first no nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor, was introduced in India by Cipla in March this year. In addition to its proven efficacy in the combination treatment of HIV infection, studies have shown that a single dose of Nevirapine 200 mg administered to an HIV infected mother at the onset of labour and another dose given to the newborn (2mg/kg body weight) within the first 72 hours of birth can reduce HIV transmission from the mother to the child by as much as 50%. This has been suggested to be a cost effective strategy in many developing countries, for the prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV. In this context, Cipla is pleased to offer Nevimune (Nevirapine tablets and suspension) for prevention of mother-to-child-transmission of HIV infection to the Government of India at no cost for distribution within India to areas where HIV infection is prevalent among pregnant women. This supply of Nevimune will continue for 2 years from the time the distribution is taken up by the Government of India/National AIDS Control Organisation/UNICEF etc. We therefore welcome a proposal and implementation programme from your side at the earliest. Thanking you, Yours sincerely, For Cipla Limited M.K. Hamied Director
Guest guest
Dear eFORUM members, I am Indian doctor working for just over a year as the HIV/AIDS Project Advisor for Save the Children US based in Kathmandu, Nepal. We are beginning to see HIV +ve mothers and positive children in Nepal especially in urban centres of health care. These centers have begun developing protocols for PMTCT and would greatly benefit from free supplies. I was wondering if CIPLA might consider the possibility of free supply of Niverapine to these NGO or government run centres in Nepal. I would be happy to facilitate the necessary linkages. I make this request as Nepal and India are traditionally friendly countries with a long open border whose HIV epidemics are inextricably linked. It is therefore in both India's and Nepal's interest to work on this issue of HIV prevention and impact mitigation together. My contact details are Dr. ph Chandy, HIV/AIDS Project Advisor, C/o Save the Children US, P. B. No. 2218, Kathmandu, Nepal. Ph: 00-977-1-412598, Fax: 00-977-1-410375 and Email: jchandy@... . In anticipation of a positive response ASAP, Sincerely, Dr. ph Chandy E-mail:jchandy@...
Guest guest
Dear Forum members, CIPLA'S letter to NACO is is a very encouraging move by the pharmaceutical company. We should now think of promoting screening of antenatal mothers for HIV. It can be initiated on a pilot basis. The message of availability of drug for perinatal prevention should be widelly circulated among the general public. Taking the size and complexity of other problems, it is not possible for all actions to be government initiated. The govenrment should encourage NGOs to take up this implementation.
