Hi Karri, We were told we would only stay one night in ICU because of his age.

Well we never made it to ICU that night there were no beds. We stayed in

recovery for the night. No sleep for us but he did have his own nurse which I

liked. He drank well for the first 24 hours but then got sick. I think the

meds wore off quick and he was in a lot of pain. He also vomitted a couple

times and I think that ended it for him. We just pushed liquids as much as

possible. We even tried a baby bottle which after day 4 they let us have and

that did it. He drank and they let us go. I do think he did better once we got

home and was more comfortable. We gave him many choices. He really liked juice

boxes but you can't leave their side because of the straw. He also liked milk

shakes from Mc's. For me I was paranoid about how much he got into him a

day. I believe it is a minimum of 16 ounces a day but ask the doctors or

nurses. We also played a lot of games. We found a

toy, stickers or videos he liked and if he wanted a toy or sticker he had to

take a drink. If it was a video I would stop it every couple of minutes and he

drank to get it going again. I also bought Pediasure because it has a lot of

protein in it but I could only get that in him with a medicine syringe. Just be

sure the pain meds do not wear off. It has been a long two weeks but he is

doing better so keep in mind it will get better. Please let me know if I can

answer anything else and let me know how it goes. I'll be thinking of you.

Any advice for me? My daughter (25 months old) goes into surgery for T & A

this Thursday. They said she could be in the hospital for 3-7 days. When she

starts drinking fluids, then she can go home. How many days did it take until CJ

drank? Any advice will be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi Kara, I am mom to C.J. 22 months. He had a tonsillectomy 2 weeks ago this

Wednesday. We were suppose to stay over one night and ended up 3 nights. The

surgery itself went fine. He had trouble the following day with vomitting and

then refusing to drink which led to dehydration. He just isn't old enough to

understand that he needs to drink. We are much improved now and only time will

tell if the surgery worked to keep the fevers away. We couldn't stand to see him

suffer every 2 weeks and he did suffer. We contemplated putting him through the

surgery, and it was rough, but if there is a chance it could help we were

willing to do it. The success rate our doctor gave us was 29 out of 30. I keep

my fingers crossed every day that it worked for C.J. It is a rough 2 weeks I

won't lie but with your son being older it is more likely you can explain why it

hurts and why he needs to drink. I wish you luck with your decision and if I can

be any further help please let me

know.

My 4 year old son has been using prednisone for almost a year and we

are looking at tonsillectomy to stop his fevers. The specialist we see

recommended we try prednisone for 1 year and move on if he was still

having fevers.

He has had genetic testing for and his only symptom is high fever

for 3-5 days and a " scratchy throat " or " sore mouth. " At first the

prednisone spaced his fevers out and took them away right away. Now

they are 2 weeks apart and with this current one, I've given him 2

doses of prednisone with very little effect on his fever.

In the one study I've read, all 15 children had complete resolution of

symptoms after the tonsillectomy. I guess I'm just looking for

encouragement since the idea of surgery does not sound inviting.

Thanks,

Kara, mom to Tommy
