LOW FERRITIN

Hi all

I haven't been well enough to follow the list for a while including this

particular thread (so apologies if this has already been discussed).

My ferritin levels are also low and I was wondering if there is a way to

supplement the ferritin without having to take a lot of iron (ie, a way

to supplement the individual element of ferritin).

I've read that low ferritin levels can cause low dopamine levels. Does

anyone know any more about this relationship and what symptoms can be

improved by bringing ferritin levels back to normal?

Many thanks

best wishes

Vicky

270 and my ferritin is a 3.

Hi

I have also had very low ferritin. At one stage it was undetectable

in tests.

You say you are taking immunopro. I havnt taken this but

have heard that it contains high amounts of L-cystein.

I took L-cystein for quite a while because it really reduced my pain

and symptoms.

It removes many poisons from the gut and body. However I believe It

can also chelate heavy metals and essential minerals. This chelating

of essential minerals might include iron.

You could try supplimenting with iron at a different time of the day

as you take immunopro.

Hope this helps.

Nelly and all,

Yes, I'm going to have to think hard now and maybe I will...

Does any Cheney patient here know what he does with ferritin levels

like this?

Also, I don't think my doc is going to do abx without a plan and

knowing what we are trying to kill....oiy.

I have ferretin problems as well, I had 25.5 last year and it went down to

18.5 in a year. I was taking Solgar gentle iron but my doctor said that

a)I'm not absorbing it and b)the dosage is lousy.

Anyhow he put me on an iron rich diet with iron supplementation and after 3

months I only went back up to 23.4...so we are trying a different form of

supplement and I haven't re-taken the ferretin, he told me to wait three

months, but I had to take a blood test for something else a month after

starting the other iron and my hemoglobin had gone up from 12.7 to 14 in one

month....so I guess it is helping.

Judy,

As Nelly says - have you tried antibiotics? It MUST be worth a try and it

seems the result would be quite obvious?

Low ferritin: (B) just sent me a discussion from the AMALGAM

list that said mercury could also be responsible. Will try to talk

to my doc about all this Friday and report back. A chiropractor in

my area claims JMT (anyone know it? A chiro technique) can wipe out

mycoplasmas - another reason why there may be low ferritin levels.

Cheney patients - if you are low low low in ferritin but he is

hesitant to put you on abx, what then? I think my gut would have a

really hard time w abx...just finally got it to work pretty well

again...

Dear n,

I have not tried a long course of doxy yet, did 3 weeks last year but it

didnt do much, my doctor wont give it to me now as he says I show no sign of

infection. Am going to a specialist on July 31 and will speak to him about

it.

Low ferritin = iron deficiency. What's her Iron/TIBC? What form of

iron is she taking? Also, is she taking B12? That can interfere with

the ferritin results.

As iron deficiency develops, low ferritin usually appears before

anemia. There are two other conditions that are associated with low

ferritin: hypothyroidism and scurvy. If your pt with low ferritin and

normal Hb has a low MCV, she may be iron deficient; if MCV is normal,

she may be iron-depleted.

Her CBC panel is normal:

Hemoglobin 13.8, hematocrite 38.8

MCV 87, MCH 31,

MCHC 35.4

TIBC 321, Iron serum 90

Iron saturation 28 %

AS you see all other iron labs normal, but ferritin is 9

She takes Bariatric Advantage (ferrous fumarate)-50-60 mg

What do i recommend? More iron supplements? When should her labs

improve?

How's the protein status of the patient?

Protein status is excellent.I probably should increase iron

supplements.Anything else i should investigate?

***Low ferritin test results are common in CFS and it is the low

glutathione issue in the cells of the stomach lining that are the

trouble, not availability of iron per say. The stomach cannot absorb

the iron sufficiently in this state so tests in many of us come out

low as my certainly did in the past.

Thanks

Do you mean there is no use of supplementing?

***I mean the glutathione issue needs to be addressed firstly, then

you may have not need to supplement iron at all. Of course if your

diet is not iron rich and you are not getting iron from any other

source then I think it's alright to supplement it, just no need to do

it therapeutically unless your doc urgently recommends it.
