Visit to the endocrinologist yesterday

Hello all,

I went to see the endocrinologist. She introduced herself as " Dr X's registrar " .

Here is a summary of what she told me:

- My Synacthen results were interpreted as normal by Dr X because even if the

first reading was low, the second reading was normal, so they won't do any more

about that.

- When I offered to have a 24-hour saliva test done, she told me it was useless

because they were only done if patients had too much cortisol.

- I asked about my magnesium and ferritin levels, which are both in the low end

of range, and was told they are both normal and no supplementation is needed.

- They will not test my zinc or copper levels because they can tell from my

Thyroid hormone results that I do not have a malabsorption issue. (She initially

told me my GP could do these, and I told her my GP had told me it was up to the

specialists).

- They will not test my ovarian hormone levels, even though they were abnormal

last test, because these hormones vary so much that the result would not be any

use - only confusing and stressful for me.

- As far as they are concerned, my fatigue and aches/pains are not due to an

endocrine cause. However, my thyroid levels were abnormal last test (9 December

- hyperthyroid), so could I please come back in 2/3 months and have them checked

a week beforehand.

I told her about my symptoms (bouts of dizziness, fluctuating blood pressure,

sleep problems, fatigue, aches and pains). Having read up here and elsewhere I

know that some of what she told me was inaccurate, and I pressed the above

points as far as I felt I could. However, it was very clear to me that while she

was sympathetic, she was eager to eliminate all possibilities except the one

they had chosen.

I am now at the point where I do not want to spend my limited energy trying to

fight a health system that clearly doesn't want to know - I'd rather concentrate

on getting better myself. I am tired of hoping only to feel let down.

I am currently reviewing my options. Meanwhile, I have bought " Your Thyroid and

How to Keep it Healthy " . I am also continuing my supplements/homeopathic

treatment and will look at buying Nutri Adrenal.

Best wishes,

Sensible girl - after your treatment within the NHS, I

think you are wise to take your health into your own hands. If it is possible

at any time to see Dr Peatfield, I would beg, borrow or steal the money in order

to do this - believe me, it will be the best thing you can do to help yourself.

Read his book and if there is any part of it that you don't

understand, let us know. We will help you all we can.

It might be reassuring for you all to know that Dr Peatfield has

at last completed his third book - hopefully entitled " The Great Thyroid

Scandal Revisited " - This book has been written for patients to help them

self diagnose, self treat and self monitor and generally look after themselves

right from the start. He knows only too well that mainstream doctors are not

doing this and leaving tens of thousands of people to suffer so unnecessarily.

Learn everything you can about the associated conditions that go

along with being hypothyroid by reading the information on our web site www.tpa-uk.org.uk under hypothyroidism and

then on 'Associated Conditions'.

Good luck .

Luv - Sheila

Hello Sheila,

Thank you for your support and advice - much appreciated, particularly as

yesterday's visit got to me more than I'd like to admit. I was interested to see

the thread about Addenbrookes' - that's where I was yesterday. I hope the

patient who posted about being referred there has better luck than I had.

Re Dr Peatfield: as I understand it he no longer a GP and cannot prescribe

medication. What happens if prescription-only medication is needed as part of

treatment?

I would also like to know more about sourcing Fluconazole - it's £9.99 a pill

from the pharmacist, is there any cheaper way to do this?

Thank you for all you are doing on our behalf - until now I had an idea things

were not good, but I had failed to appreciate just how abysmal the situation is.

Best wishes,

Hi ,

Thanks a lot for the link and the Ebay suggestion - I would not have thought of

that ^_^

The endo I saw introduced herself as Dr P (I think) and said she was Dr W's

Registrar. She went to consult with Dr W before rounding off the consultation

for confirmation purposes.

Best wishes,

I forgot to say that you cannot buy any drugs without a

prescription in the UK - it is quite illegal. However, you can buy them from

pharmacies abroad - mainly the USA>
