Guest guest
Hi Lesney, I've been on 5mg folate for about two years now (not on thyorid meds). I was losing my short-term memory. What I regained was more than a short-term memory loss. Bob > > Hi. > > The results from last week's test showed that I am low in folate and my GP has prescribed 5mg folic acid daily. The others, he says, are ok (TSH and T4 were almost exactly the same as before - 1.7 and 12) but I won't get the exact figures for a couple of days. They will be sent to me by post to me and when I get them I'll post them here. > > Is the low folate interfering with my thyroid hormones and therefore causing the symptoms? > > Does anyone know anything about the causes of folate deficiency? > > I've been looking online and to be honest I can't relate to any of the causes listed. Guest guest
Hi bob Sorry to jump in on this but having looked at the messages regarding Folate I wondered if folate was the same as ferritin. My daughter has just had some blood tests done and her ferritin was 26 (range 13-150) but underneath the result was the wording:- Optimum Ferritin level for females: >27ug/L. I questioned the Doctor on this but he said it was normal. Would be interesting to get your view on the above. Many thanks. kind regards Vickyanne From: bob.m9uk <Bob.m9uk@...>Subject: Re: Test results - folate lowthyroid treatment Date: Thursday, 22 April, 2010, 22:30 Hi Lesney,I've been on 5mg folate for about two years now (not on thyorid meds).I was losing my short-term memory. What I regained was more than a short-term memory loss.Bob>> Hi.> > The results from last week's test showed that I am low in folate and my GP has prescribed 5mg folic acid daily. Guest guest
Hi Bob, Short term memory loss! I think I have a hole in the back of my head where bits fall out as I go along. I'm in the habit of writing things down at the moment (mostly on the back of my hand) because I don't stand a chance otherwise. I'd still like to know what has caused this though. My GP doesn't want to retest my blood for 2 months so I suppose I will hae to wait until then for some answers? Guest guest
Hi Lou Thank you so much for your input on my message to Bob. I am sorry but I have only just found and read your reply. Again thank you for taking the time to respond to me. I will certainly look at everything you have sent me. Yes fatigue is very much an issue with my Daughter - and do you know I had my Daughter's blood drawn and tested by a private Doctor who was able to come out to take her blood. When I questioned him about her ferritn level being below the optimal level for a female he said that he found nothing wrong with that. What can I say?!! The only reason I got in touch with a private doctor was because my Daughter needed her bloods drawn and as she couldn't get out of the house he seemed the most plausible way of getting these done. He told myself and my husband that he sends the blood to the "Doctor's Laboratory" in London. He also took blood for cortisol, but that was at 10.45am and not at 9.00am. I seriously have my doubts. I am thinking of getting a referral to Dr Skinner as I am not at all happy about any of her results. Thanks again for replying to me. Wish you well. Ferritin is a test for stored iron whereas Folate is a separate test. Low and low-normal ferritin levels can be associated with fatigue in women.NHS doctors think that anything in the range is Okay for Ferritin, whereas private thyroid doctors encourage patients to get their ferritin level higher. You can read for example this endo's discussion of low ferritin and thyroid function:www.goodhormoneheal th.com/Iron% 20Deficiency% 20and%20Fatiguea ug06.pdf There was also a study in the BMJ that showed that women with fatigue who had ferritin levels less than 50 benefitted from iron supplementation: http://www.ncbi. nlm.nih.gov/ pmc/articles/ PMC156009/If fatigue is an issue for your daughter, then it might help to address the ferritin level. I think Sheila may have info about this in her files.> Hi bob> > Sorry to jump in on this but having looked at the messages regarding Folate I wondered if folate was the same as ferritin.> > My daughter has just had some blood tests done and her ferritin was 26 (range 13-150) but underneath the result was the wording:- Optimum Ferritin level for females: >27ug/L.
