Guest guest
Oh please! There are no panda or any other creatures in these herbs as stated roots, rhizomes and tubers. As a TCM student not all herbalist are saturn. Chinese herbs are herbs not any other! Hope you do not enjoy fish battered or meat balls, chicken kiev. I am Buddhist, please. There are many chemicals in many things not meant for human needs at all. Guest guest
Hi Rosemary Welcome to our forum where I hope you get the help and support you need. If you need questions answering, ask away and somebody hopefully will be along with an answer. If anybody has been given a diagnosis of hypothyroidism, it is because their thyroid is not excreting enough thyroid hormone, and you can ONLY replace this with either synthetic thyroid hormone (thyroxine) or with natural desiccated porcine thyroid extract such as the brand names Armour Thyroid, Nature Throid or Westhroid. There is nothing on this earth that can be substituted for thyroid hormones and we certainly never recommend herbs, whether Chinese or from anywhere else for the treatment of hypothyroidism. Guest guest
Hello Rosemary This forum is open to all discussions by everybody regarding thyroid disease. We have another forum where you can chat about anything other than thyroid and if you ask Lilian, she will send you an invitation. There you can chat about anything and everything and perhaps the subject of Chinese Herbs should be discussed on there. We are fully aware of the many vitamins, minerals, enzymes etc., which help support thyroid and adrenal function, but we do not recommend any 'alternative medicines' such as Chinese herbs as a replacement for thyroid hormone - because quite simply, there are none. And yes, I cook my lamb with sprigs of mint and have mint sauce with it too. I use a lot of herbs in my cooking and am aware of the medicinal properties of many - and I am also open to learning more. Guest guest
Hi P xo So sweet of you thank you. As you may know by now so hope this gets to you privately or otherwise. This has been a trying time for me both spiritually and physically. There is an apology here in Australia for Forgotten Australians by the Gov. and some friends of mine are not included so am helping them. But as for being a student, I have been so for a while, many years as no support at all was offered so I tried acupuncture and needless as well with magnaton discs in 1980’s. I had to detox big time after I could no longer take meds for heart attack. I was literary on my back most of the day with them and this for high BP which is actually low,(not high and never has been) go figure this I can’t and it was to protected the kidney?. It has taken many months now after a couple of years of this and am just feeling a bit more normal whatever this means, only maybe I the last couple of months. It was the predsnazone that did me in worse so made changes even if it literally killed me. As my herbalist said to me your foundation is very weak no lifting, no stress do all slowly, very slowly and go for a short walk only each day do nothing else. Still he says the same though improved some now still, He says do all slowly take an hour to do it after thinking on it. It is such a thing re diabetes as well I am now eating bitter melon as a tea though I can use it in soups as it is only dried veg. Seems to support the diabetes and I feel better for it big time. Bitter being sweet and all this idea. Sweet creates inflammation maybe? As they often are heart foods therefore can not be utilized as out of balance and hormones unavailable to me of course. I have read also that at times replacement is not always helpful so it may be for me only. I am different it seems. Meditation is helpful to support relaxation under stress and aids much for some. I used to seek the answer now I forgot the question this after RAI 131 killed my life for me. I hyperventilated for hours on end indeed months on ends with breaks here and there so something had to be done apart from serapax to keep me calmer. Loathed them as depression come down was bad and worse to cope with. I also have an Asian heritage gen’s back so this resonates for me of course perhaps and TCM professionals are very respectful in this with and to me as I don’t look anything like maybe. They keep saying ‘oh you are very fortunate’. All have offered to me generously and graciously at all times including the areas here all temples are invited to join. I feel very privileged in this to be so invited. Including Dali’s mountain retreat. As for different areas to help my husband is amazed that I will try so many areas to help myself, my health ion this life as an abused child of the system. So many have thyroid diseases of all kinds including 2 of my doctors as well. Food has become a real issue for me as all is not taken well so herbs, oils are out as they can make me worse. And I notice they do big time as with meats as they are heat foods requiring added issues. Also had total hysterectomy to young in my 30’s. Thanks again Rosemary From: thyroid treatment [mailto:thyroid treatment ] On Behalf Of patersonia Sent: Tuesday, 27 October 2009 7:53 PM thyroid treatment Subject: Re: what the, feeling better! Hi Rosemary, Thanks for this information. I think there needs to be a range of views on the forum, so I appreciate the info about Chinese herbs, much as I appreciate information about vitamins, minerals etc that can help too. I understand that Sheila has certain guidelines for the forum, so if the discussion of herbs is not permitted, that is fine, but I think it is a shame, because many of our pharmaceuticals are based on herbs anyway, but I respect her wishes as moderator of the forum, so am happy to discuss this in a different forum such as chat or by private email. Chinese medicine is 1000's of years old - much older than Western medicine. I personally am interested in learning of such things. Of course, like anything that anyone suggests, we need to check things out with a health professional to make sure that it suits our particular body and medical condition. Even though (like Sheila stated) thyroid replacement hormone is necessary, I believe there are different modalities that can help thyroid conditions, and if Chinese medicine has helped you, that is great. I have a friend who uses Chinese medicine for advanced bone marrow cancer and she has found that this medicine has helped her enormously. Chinese medicine and acupuncture is currently keeping her on her feet, as she is extremely unwell. She is a Buddhist nun and doesn't harm animals because it is against her religion. Her Chinese herbs DO NOT contain animal products (she made sure of it!) and she has benefited tremendously from using them. I know that animal products are used in some Chinese medicine formulations and I would not EVER advocate the use of such medicines for the reasons that another forum member mentioned, but I would bet my bottom dollar that a lot of animals went through a lot of pain to give us our thyroid replacement hormones too due to testing requir! ements, so really we can't win. I eat a vegetarian diet, but I know that animals would have died when reaping the crops, so it doesn't matter what you do - creatures are always harmed or killed. I personally have used Tibetan medicine and found it helped me get over 'Delhi Belly' within hours. I was seen by a Senior Doctor at the Dalai Lama's Medical Clinic in Dharamsala who prescribed the tummy herbs. I also used Tibetan herbs that were collected on a hillside in Tibet and made into a tea (so I guess I will probably never have that tea again!!!) which helped ease anxiety symptoms tremendously. The effects were quite extraordinary. I didn't feel anything except the anxiety completely disappear. Other than that, I felt 'normal'. Anyhow, that is my 2c worth. Guest guest
Food, herbs is all the same ‘‘thyroid disease’ is a disease’ this combo in tablet form was offered as a support for my thyroid disease including other herbs for me by a highly qualified practioner. In my case this was for treatment as part of a comprehensive management for my over all health including thyroid not as a ‘replacement at all for hormones’ that frankly are not there for me to utitize in any case at all. It is ‘dead RAI 131’ therefore not nor able to be in functioning mode, made sure of that along with doctors and Endo. No advice, nothing, no replacement for many years. Till I near died perhaps and with pain so great as a friend of mine is also including chronic pain syndrome issues now. All back up of all kinds of thyroid hormones for thyroid function has not been available at all. Calcium can not be absorbed as no hormone to utilize this food at all so greatly advertised. Which can add a cause cancer I am to understand for women perhaps from my own research. I have read some in a site for thyroid time back now both natural and synthetic have advantages and disadvantages perhaps I wouldn’t know as I have not trialled them. As I have been left to do for myself since the age of 5 in all areas. So maybe I am not so special. Just ill now. It is supporting me for now who is to know if it is worthwhile at all or just a waste of money again. Guest guest
Thanks for clarifying that Sheila. Out of interest, my Tibetan doctor and I agreed that I should continue any western medicines I was prescribed, and to use the Tibetan medicine as an adjunct to things that my GP gave me. My GP knew I was using Tibetan medicine and was supportive. I was lucky on both fronts because they worked together, albeit in different hemispheres of the globe! Guest guest
Hi Sheila, Thanks for asking. No, I'm not feeling better re my thyroid. I went and saw my endo yesterday (3rd visit) and, like you, the endo said that all of my thyroid levels (TSH, free T3, free T4) looked really good at the moment. My free T3 level is now the highest it has EVER been 4.8 (in a range of 3.1 - 5.4), TSH is 0.3 (in range of 0.5 - 4.0) and free T4 16 (in range of 10 - 25). The endo was surprised about the free T4 level remaining constant over time. They said they wanted all of the thyroid levels to be good, and to see how I felt and then keep exploring different things to try and work out why I still feel so bad. The endo takes me very seriously when I tell them about how much my lifestyle has changed since being diagnosed and they seem to really want to get to the bottom of it all. The endo said they want to explore OTHER things as well, just in case another health problems have been missed. About 3 months ago they ran a swag of tests to look for other hormonal issues in order to try and get to the bottom of my exhaustion and lack of comprehension and poor memory. At the time, the endo did tests to check for pituitary problems and I had growth hormone tests etc. Guess what? After your months of gently reminding me that I should look into my cortisol levels (via saliva tests) it is going to happen. I had a serum cortisol test a while ago which was fine, but the endo wants to explore the cortisol thing further via a saliva test. They said my 12kg weight gain (most of it within the time that I've been seeing this endo) was too much and that it was a bit unusual to gain so much so quickly. This is another reason why they are looking into cortisol levels. I mentioned the 4 times a day saliva test that you told me about, but in the first instance the endo has ordered just a midnight saliva test (the endo told me the reason and the rationale made perfect sense to me, but my brain can't remember it right now). The endo said that if the midnight levels aren't in range they will order a swag of other tests (saliva tests at different times of the day plus other tests) to really look into the cortisol stuff. I'm quite impressed. The endo has also ordered a CT scan to rule out any possible problems in that regard. I had one in 2007 and they said it is good because it means there is a baseline, but they want to repeat the CT scan for their peace of mind. I asked about alternative treatments because now all my levels seem fine, but I still feel awful and the endo mentioned supplementation with T3 (the endo prescribes this to some people) but didn't think it was a good idea in my case, given my past history with T3 and some of the awful symptoms I've had. The endo doesn't want to discount that there might be other health issues, so they want to explore other things. So anyway, the long and the short of it Sheila is that I'm not feeling better, but I'm still TRYING to get better. I feel like my endo is exploring heaps of different things and genuinely wants to help me. They want me to get my Vit D levels higher because that may decrease my slightly elevated parathyroid hormone levels. See? The endo checked my Vit D and parathyroid levels last time too. Seems to be very thorough. So I haven't given up on getting better, however I don't feel better right now. Thanks again for asking Sheila. I will be at our farm for about a week, but would love to hear back from you and can check for a response upon my return. P xo > > Hi P.......... Guest guest
Hi P, Mitochondrial problems would cause low energy and it's thought there are far more people with mitochondrial problems than had previously been assumed. I've been reading some interesting articles about Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) lately, and they make good sense. I'll see if I can condense them into easily understood English.....:-) There are some mitochondrially targeted supplements coming along (MitoQ is one of them). More on that later. best wishes Bob > > > > Hi P.......... Guest guest
Hi P - I am absolutely delighted that your endo is taking so much time with you - he obviously is a very caring man and wants to get to the bottom of things. it will be interesting to see your cortisol results - can you tell me, do you have problems sleeping at night because for many such people, that is often because their cortisol level is high in the range at night when it should be at its lowest. We will just have to wait and see on that one. Did you ask for the blood tests for ferritin, B12, magnesium, zinc, copper and folate? If not, remind him that if any of these are low, your thyroid hormone cannot be absorbed properly. Enjoy your week on the farm. Guest guest
Hi P,..not the paper I was reading on ROS/mitochondria, but just as immediately relevant for delayed sleep phase...http://www.jbc.org/content/282/7/4233.longMammalian Pinealocytes—The clock controlling the mammalian pinealocyte is located in the suprachiasmatic nucleus of the hypothalamus (SCN), which receives photic input from the retina via the retinohypothalamic tract. Light acts through this tract to entrain the clock and also acts downstream of the clock to block SCN stimulation of the pineal gland. The SCN is hardwired to the pineal gland by a neural pathway that traverses the brain, spinal cord, and superior cervical ganglia. Postganglionic projections from the latter innervate the pineal gland. At night, SCN stimulation releases norepinephrine into the pineal perivascular space (26, 45, 72). Norepinephrine activates adenylyl cyclase via β1-adrenergic receptors and increases intracellular Ca2+ and protein kinase C activity via α1B-adrenergic receptors (73, 74), thereby potentiating β1-adrenergic receptor activation of adenylyl cyclase (75). This "cross-talk" causes a large and rapid increase in cAMP (73, 76–78). above, may be the fast 'wake up call'...look at the abstract ~ then the conclusion of the Discussion section.calming the ' cAMP ' looks to be useful...next question, how to do that reliably??best wishesBob
Guest guest
Hi again Bob, I'm heading to our farm now, but when I get back I will have a good look at this. Our circadian rhythms are interesting, aren't they? > > > Hi P, > > ..not the paper I was reading on ROS/mitochondria, but just as > immediately relevant for delayed sleep phase... >
Guest guest
Hi again Sheila, Thanks for the suggestion, but I tried using melatonin in the past. Unfortunately it didn't seem to alter my sleeping patterns nor help me get off to sleep. Tried various doses and tried using it at various times before bed, but alas it did nothing much at all!!!! Here I am again at midnight and I'm not feeling particularly tired. I'll be interested to see what the 'midnight cortisol' test result shows. Mind you, I had a 'non drowsy' antihistamine tablet yesterday that made me sleep from 10am - 5pm yesterday. I then stayed up to midnight and slept for the rest of the night and woke in an absolutely foul mood. Never taking THAT stuff again!!!!! I will just put up with the intense itchiness of my midge bites. Eech. The endo mentioned they wanted to do the midnight cortisol first (can't remember the rationale, but it made sense at the time when my endo explained it to me) and then if the midnight one is an issue they want to follow up with a range of other tests for cortisol, including (I think!) 24 hour. I'm really hoping this endo is 'onto' something and can help me. By the way, I just want to say thanks again for your support and suggestions over the years Sheila. This forum has been a real support to me. P xo > > It might be worth getting the 24 hour salivary adrenal profile done to see > if you do have too much Cortisol. Guest guest
I bet my bottom dollar that you will end up getting the 24 hour salivary adrenal profile done P as it could well be your midnight cortisol level is too high, causing your sleeplessness. Your adrenals might be what is causing all your other problems i.e. not being able to take any form of T3 etc. Don't delay this, get the test done as soon as you can - even if it means nagging your endo. Guest guest
Well, the endo is initially testing the midnight cortisol levels via a saliva test, so it might show something up. Now I wish I did the 24hr test when I had a test request form from my other doc, , mainly because that was the time when I was REALLY bad and staying up until 2-3am. I guess I am usually up late though and was up to 1.30am last night, so it might show something up in the test. For me, going to bed before midnight (midnight is an early night for me) feels like the equivalent of a 'normal' sleeper going to bed at 5.30pm in the afternoon! It will be really interesting to see what the results show Sheila. If you like, I will keep you informed. Mind you, it is only 10.40pm at the moment and I'm feeling a little weary, but that might have to do with the fact that it is 85 deg F (29.7deg C) here this evening. Not great sleeping weather, but enough to knock the socks out of any energy stores.
