Yesterday, in newspapers in Australia, there were articles on class action (i.e. sueing) against Bonsoy who produce soy milk.   The suit claims that a number of women developed thyroid problems after consuming Bonsoy's soy milk and that the reason is because it had high levels of iodine.   In two articles I read, they interviewed a woman who talked about developed severe hypothyroidism after drinking lots and lots of Bonsoy after the birth of her child.   She said she put it on everything and increased her intake of the soy milk when she began feeling sick.

I imagine this will be an interesting case because it's not like Bonsoy can come out and say that the hypothyroidism was caused by these women consuming copious quantities of soy milk because soy milk is their main (perhaps only) product.

They say they have now altered the make up to reduce iodine levels.   The soy milk used to contain kombu, the source of the iodine. These are a couple of links to briefer versions of what was in the paper.

There is also this site which talks about digging around for past cases of thyroid problems being caused by soy milk with high levels of iodine, with the view that it was the iodine that was the problem.

I would love to write a letter to the " letters " section of the newspaper but am worried I wouldn't be articulate enough and have access to the more pertinent research.    I haven't done an extensive search yet, but have been unable to find anywhere where there is any suggestion that soy has ever been linked to thyroid issues.
