Iodine Intake

Hi group,

I'm new to this forum. I was recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism. I went off

birth control in February, 2010. In July, 2010 I noticed that my hair was

thinner and I also lost about 10 pounds. Since then, my hair just been falling

out and it's getting very thin, now. I went to see a Naturopath who put me on a

whole bunch of vitamins, mostly A, E, D, Biotin, fish oil, etc. After my blood

work came back, she also added BMR Complex (Thyroid booster, not Thyroxin) to my

other supplements. My TSH was 3.417, still in normal range, but my Free T4 was

too low at 0.68 ng/dL, and free T3 was on the bottom of the normal range at 2.3

pg/mL. I read so much about Iodine and how beneficial it can be to people with

hypothyroidism. I have not gone through any Iodine blood or urine tests yet.

The BMR Complex has some Iodine in it (300 mcg per 2 tablets. That's the amount,

I'm taking right now), but not as much as 12.5 mgs. I asked my doctor if I

should get an additional Iodine supplement, but she stated that the amount in

the BMR and my multi-vitamin is sufficient.

Can you please let me know, if I should start taking any additional

Iodine/Iodide supplement on top of all this? Considering that I haven't gotten

my iodine levels tested yet, can an extra dosage of 12.5 iodine daily harm me,

or make my condition ever worse? I really worry about my hair right now. I also

started taking birth control again. I forgot to mention that I never got my

period back after I discontinued it. It has been 6 month, now. Before I stopped

taking in, my health and hair were fine. No problems. The other part of the

problem must be my low level of Estrogen. Estrogen is supposed to improve my

hair condition and my period will come back as well. My Naturopath was not happy

to hear about me taking birth control again…

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thank you very much! Looking forward to hear from you & #61514;
