Guest guest
Works great for me:) Bethann I'm wanting to hear any input any of you may have about the magnesium oil that Swanson's has. It says it is from the same deposits the Ancient Minerals is from. I don't think I can handle the $$$$ on the Ancient Minerals, but would like to try major use of mag oil. So, if anyone has experience with it or further info, please let me hear. Thanks much, Judy

Guest guest
It's great stuff, Judy, and it's really excellent for getting more magnesium into the body. I'm extremely sensitive to oral mag, but the oil really feels wonderful. I had IV magnesium prescribed for me for pain, which I couldn't afford, but the spray mag really helps. -- At 04:42 PM 8/17/2010, you wrote: >I'm wanting to hear any input any of you may have about the magnesium oil >that Swanson's has. The Swanson one is so much lower in price, it seems to me perhaps it is more diluted than the Ancient Minerals? Guest guest
I've been following this thread with interest, thinking I really should use the bottle of Ocean Minerals that has been sitting around here forever. When I went to the Swanson's website and began reading, I came across this: "The magnesium gives it a slippery feel, which is why it is called Magnesium Oil. It absorbs readily into the skin, leaving no oily residue, no scent, no sign whatsoever that it has been applied." And that reminded me of why I had given up on the oil I have: a day or so after applying it to my (very dry) legs, I could still feel an unpleasantly slick "coating" on my legs which I would finally wash off. Do I have a "bad" brand of the oil? Or has anyone else found the oil to be non-absorbing? Guest guest
Noooo, not really, but I add a little liquid DMSO to my bottles of oil to make it absorb quicker. Guest guest
I have been using the Ancient Mineral brand of magnesium oil. I put it on my body first thing in the morning; it feels oily when applied, after about a half hour a white residue appears, and I shower it off. Its said the magnesium is absorbed transdermally (sp) in about 20 minutes, the residue is normal and washes off easily. What you have sounds like what I have, very expensive one. Tomorrow I am going to call Swansons and find out if the one they sell for considerably less, is the same thing. Also, at first I had to dilute it, as they suggest, as it can sting a bit when first applied; now I use it full strength, it stings, but is fine after its washed off. Guest guest
Call Swanson and ask about their magnesium oil. They say it is for the skin only not to supply magnesium to the body etc. Also, from what I understand, it is pure magnesium (no trace minerals). Ask to talk to someone who knows about the product not just anyone who answers the phone. Guest guest
> Call Swanson and ask about their magnesium oil. They say it is for the skin only not to supply magnesium to the body etc. Also, from what I understand, it is pure magnesium (no trace minerals). Ask to talk to someone who knows about the product not just anyone who answers the phone. Dr. Norm Shealy did quite a bit of research and testing on magnesium and sells his own product as well. His studies revealed that there are three effective ways to replenish adequate cellular magnesium stores in the body ... 1. IV Mg chloride- 2 gms daily for 10 days 2. Oral supplementation with Mg taurate - it takes about a year of significant doses 3. Magnesium Oil or Magnesium Lotion containing magnesium as chloride - this takes 4 - 6 weeks depending on individual circumstances. With his product which delivers 150 mg per tsp he recommends an application of 2 tsp/2x per day for about 6 weeks, then continue at that dose or apply once per day depending on individual circumstances. He says to apply anywhere on the body but does not recommend on the face. The product can be rinsed off after 20 minutes as the Mg will be absorbed by then. Transdermal magnesium chloride also was proven to raise DHEA levels but this effect was not realized when using other forms and applications of magnesium, including magnesium sulfate (epsom salts). Magnesium chloride crystals can also be purchased to put in the bath or to make your own lotion or oil. Shealy sells some on his website but I bought mine from an aquarium supply store that carried USP grade magnesium chloride crystals. Sensitive people will experiencing stinging and itchiness, this can be helped by adding something like coconut oil or diluting further with water. More information can be found on his website www.selfhealthsystems.com or enter a search with ' Norm Shealy Magnesium ' to read about his research and testing. Given that the Swanson's product is also made of Mg chloride it would be safe to assume that it would provide the same benefits, though the label information supplied on the site did not indicate how much Mg is delivered per spray so one would have to guess. Also, Allergy Research Group sells a liquid magnesium chloride that I have used orally but could be also be used topically. 1/2 tsp provides 66.5 mg of magnesium. If you are also wanting to supply trace minerals perhaps ingesting (or a bath of) Himalayan salt or Celtic Sea Salt would suffice?
Guest guest
Has anyone ever used magnesium citrate, the liquid in the bottle that often is sold to clean out your gut? Years ago an alternative MD highly recommended this, and I had used it for years. It is very inexpensive for a little over a buck for 16 oz. They usually sell it where they carry other over the counter supplies for digestive problems. You're suppose to take an ounce a day and it tastes somewhat like 7-up. The citrate form makes the magnesium easier for the body to utilize. >
Guest guest
Epsom salts is magnesium sulfate. Magnesium oil is magnesium chloride. Liquified epsom salts is not the same as what is called mag oil, and mag chloride is more bioavailable to the body. Here is a source I found with a comparison of the two kinds, there is more info at the link. So the answer is, they are not the same or equivalent, and mag oil (chloride) is recommended for most mag dermal supplementation: http://www.shirleys-wellness-cafe.com/magnesium.htm#versus -- >I am moving this to the OT list, I hope that's OK! > >I made my own magnesium " oil " with epsom salts in water. Guest guest
Mag citrate is very bioavailable, and for people who can tolerate it, it's a great form to take it. However, people who are sensitive to the laxative effect of magnesium often find mag citrate to be difficult to take. The benefit of the dermal application of mag oil (mag chloride) is that it bypasses the gut. -- >Has anyone ever used magnesium citrate, the liquid in the bottle that >often is sold to clean out your gut? Guest guest
Magnesium chloride is soooo beneficial to health taken internally. You could actually do both, take it internally and do topical application. Things I've noticed is that my fingernails got long and hard.( I apply mine with my hands so it gets around my cuticles) My nails haven't looked this good since high school. Two, it stops my PMS from occurring. Three: Internally, it stops all forms of constipation- no matter how bad one is bound up! I've read that it can reduce facial wrinkles, so I DO apply it to my face, especially around the lips and eyes. It will make teeth harder, so I also apply it liberally around my jaw line. I use the Nutricology magnesium chloride from Swanson, but I also bought the crystals,so I could dilute it in spring water and make my own mag oil for pennies. For even greater savings you could get mag chloride form a chemical supply house.
Guest guest
You simply obtain the mag chloride flakes and add water. Several people have posted sources. Swanson's carries the flakes, also very reasonably. --V At 10:37 PM 8/17/2010, you wrote: >Aside from applying a saturated solution of Epson Salts on the skin, does >anyone know how to make authentic Magnesium Oil? > >Grge ~~~ There is no way to peace; peace is the way ~~~~ --A.J. Guest guest
This is of some concern to me... my integration specialist is pretty intense in his wanting me NOT to take DHEA or raise my levels, as he has had two breast cancer patients who have experienced a huge upgrade in speed of progression after taking it. Would the Epsom salt version avoid raising the DHEA levels, but still help raise magnesium levels and help aching muscles? I'm having a lot of muscle spasms and referred pain from mets in hips... ~Eileen > > Transdermal magnesium chloride also was proven to raise DHEA levels but this effect was not realized when using other forms and applications of magnesium, including magnesium sulfate (epsom salts). >
