Re: Could iodine from kelp worsen hypothyroidism?

What you are experiencing could be detox symptoms. Iodine does NOT worsen

hypothyroidism.

How much iodine are you taking? Are you taking the (required) companion

nutrients? If you don't take the other nutrients detox will be way

worse. Have you done salt loading?

You'll get some answers from the tests. It could be mostly menopause

hitting, depending on how much iodine you're getting, although some people

are sensitive to smaller amounts and some of those do better with larger

amounts.

It's really important to be using unrefined salt every day and to do salt

loading in response to detox symptoms. You're definitely perimenopausal,

with the irregularities, so getting your hormones checked is a good idea.

Hi Cryss,

I second all that has said, but you need to get better

tests. You really need free T3, free T4, and TSH for your thyroid. These will

give you a true picture of what you have usable in your body.

I would suggest you consider adrenal fatigue. What your describing sounds very

much like what my wife was going through.Periods actually stopped, after 4 mos.

of 'lite'. Turned out she was adrenally fatigued, due to chronic undiagnosed and

therefore untreated Hypo.Treating with the synthetic thyroid hormones will do

the same thing, as it doesn't really treat the problem.

I initially tried having her take iodine, with the salt loading, it made her

feel much worse; it is stressful on the system, and when your adrenally fatigued

your body can't handle the stress.

Do the pupil test; take a flashlight and a mirror, and go into a dark room.Allow

your eyes a couple of minutes, to adjust to the dark light. Then, hold the

mirror in front of your face, and shine the light at your eyes, from the side.If

your adrenals are fine, your pupils should start out dialated (big) and quickly

constrict (get small) due to the lite, and stay that way. If you are adrenal

fatigued, they will constrict for a few seconds, then dialate, then constrict

again, etc. Its like if you were trying to lift and hold a heavy dumbell 1' off

the floor, and didn't have the strength. You lift, hold for a couple of seconds,

and let it drop, you try again, etc.If your pupils can't 'hold' the

constriction, you are adrenally fatigued, and you need to deal with that first.

As far as inexpensive iodine, I just bought a 4 oz. bottle of Lugols solution

for $8, plus $4 shipping off e-bay.Jim

I was afraid to have my Dr. switch my synthetic thyroid to natural because we

only have catastrophic insurance and I thought it would be expensive, but it was

only a dollar more a month! Try it, but be sure to chew it. When my Dr asked me

why, I just told him I like to try things that are more natural.

I take 1/2 t. Real Salt mineral salt about every other morning in two cups of

warm-ish water. It tastes like Ramen broth and besides helping you detox, it

thins mucous, improves bladder control and stabilizes blood pressure. I used to

get light-headed when I stood up.

Besides iodine (which I built up gradually), I also take 10 drops each day of

vitamin D3 at 400iu per drop, along with 3 tabs right before bed of 400mg

magnesium that has 15mg zinc in it, which also keeps you regular. I used to feel

run down all the time but not any more--its amazing how the right nutrients can

even brighten your mood!

When I want an easy pick-me-up or am in a hurry, I make my Zesty Tonic for

lunch. Its kind of a cross between a V-8 and a healthy cup-o-soup, and I eat it

with raw carrots. Stir together:

3/4 c. filtered warm water

1/2 T. coconut oil

Add and stir:

1/2 t. mineral salt

1/2 t. powdered kelp

a dash of cayenne pepper

Add and stir again:

3/4 c. unsalted tomato juice

10 drops vitamin D3

Make the above tomato juice with equal parts unsalted tomato sauce (35 cents a

can) and filtered water. (Reduce salt to 1/4 t. if substituting salted tomato

juice or V8--not preferred.)

Good luck! Vicki

Good stuff, Vicki. One thing though -- on the iodine protocol a person

should have 1/4 to 1/2 teas. unrefined salt every single day.

Wow that's a lot of magnesium in one shot, it would give me digestive issues.

If you are taking a good form of mag, it won’t give you

digestive issues. Mag chloride or citrate or malate are very good forms that

your body can use well. It is when your body doesn’t use it well that it causes

problems. That is why things like milk of mag and other laxative forms are

completely different types than what you use for supplementing.

would give me digestive issues.

Cryss,

I agree there seems to be more to your symptoms than just thyroid.

Central / autonomic nervous system (especially when you talk about panic/anxiety). I would agree to look at adrenals first and have a full hormone workup and a saliva cortisol test for starters.

Iodine increases the metabolism, and so can make a body speed up and work harder, which puts even more stress on an already faltering adrenal system. In that case you would most certainly feel worse, and be worse.

If I remember correctly, doesn't the adrenal, in part, make some of the thyroid hormone? An underlying adrenal problem can look like thyroid and in fact thyroid can also be part of the puzzle, which may correct when precursor hormones are available after the adrenal is treated.

Milk of magnesia is designed to destroy stomach acid right? I have none, I take

replacement acid. It would completely cancel it out and make me ill.

Donna-- I'm not sure what you're saying here. I'm pretty sure what

was referring to as " digestive upset " was the laxative action that

magnesium supplements can exert. It has nothing to do with your body using

it or not that creates the laxative action, it's a physical reality that

mag creates.

Some forms of mag aren't as prone to the laxative action. I have been

using magnesium glycinate, and of course the mag oil for skin bypasses the

gut entirely.

I would probably have to use a lot of spray/transdermally to equall the acutual

amount I'm using for my muscles of my body. I'm really on like 4x the daily

allowance of magnesium citrate. I will probably just try it for toppical muscle

application for my shoulders eventually though, like I said the website,

Swanson's isn't selling it as a suppliment, but for muscles, so I suspect it

doesn't treat the whole body very easily like you all are talking about. Maybe

someone knows for sure, or can ask a naturopath about it?

I was just stating what we have said a lot on this site. The

reason Mag oxide often causes the laxative effect is because your body can’t absorb

and use it. The body then eliminates it. Good forms of magnesium are absorbed

by the body and used properly.

Milk of magnesia is meant to be a laxative. I have no idea about

if it is designed to destroy acid.

Your current symptom also seem to be lack of hydrochloric acid.

I had same symptoms and my MD gave me antacids which of course made it far

worse. My chiro gave me HCL and in 1/2 an hour i felt excellent. Chiro said

MDs often misdiagnose this. Maybe your doc can check your HCL. But most MDs are

not aware of this problem.

Well, this isn't true, whether it's been stated on the list or

not. Magnesium citrate is a good form of mag, in that it is highly

absorbable, but it causes a laxative effect in most people over a certain

amount, and that amount is individual to the people. I used to live in a

small town with a high concentration of health enthusiasts when the Calm

product came out-- which is magnesium citrate. On one of my visits to my

acupuncturist/ND, I complained about diarrhea, and he asked me if I was

supplementing with magnesium. Turns out there was an epidemic of

Calm-magnesium-citrate-caused diarrhea in town, and being one of the

primary caregivers, he was seeing it clearly.

It's simply not true that " good forms " don't have a laxative effect, they

do indeed. I was once prescribed intravenous infusions of magnesium for my

fibromyalgia, but I couldn't afford it. I was told that intravenous was

the way to get high enough levels for my needs. I've tried many forms of

oral mag, including orotate, citrate, malate, and glycinate. All of them

have the laxative effect on me, but the glycinate is somewhat less of a

problem. I seem to be very sensitive to it, figures since I really need it.

But my point is, it's a known fact that the only form that is considered to

not have a laxative effect is glycinate. All the literature about mag

talks about this. So I don't think it's helpful to people to tell them

it's the form of mag that is the problem, since if they have diarrhea

following they may not understand it is related to the mag. It's simply one

of the struggles to face with magnesium requirements.

Milk of magnesia (magnesium hydroxide) does neutralize stomach acid because

it is a slightly alkaline mixture.

Just to restate-- the ability to tolerate mag supplements is individual.

Some people will easily tolerate 400mg, others do not. For those who have

trouble, mag oil and epsom salt baths are a good option.

If you look at the Ancient Minerals site you will see how mag oil is used.

The Swanson's version is just less expensive and has different information

on the site.

If you're fine with the mag you're taking, it's not a problem. Mag oil

really does help muscle cramps and soreness applied topically, and it

really does absorb at the rates given: 17mg per spray. But if you can

tolerate mag orally, you're fine.

I am one who can't take much magnesium at all without problems. Then, someone

in the health food store recommended I take mag/cal 1-1. I was to start of with

one pill then move up until it caused a laxative effect. I take 2 pills a

night.
