Guest guest
Any ideas on how to get our child to eat better? Ben is 8 and his diet is horrible. He is extremely picky and it is awful trying to get him to even try something new. Then he will get gaggy if you try and make him try it. He does get supplemented through his vitamin formula which is customized just for him. Any ideas that you have tried? Thanks, M.

Guest guest
My is king of chicken fingers and french fries. He would eat this 3 times a day everyday, if we let him. He also gags alot if we get him to try some veggies and forget pasta and rice. He totally gags on that. He does like broccoli and corn on the cob, though! When he was just a baby for awhile he wouldn't let anyone but his sister feed him and she was in school all day. Luckily that didn't last too long. He went through a spell of not wanting anything he thought might be a vegetable but eventually got over it. Then he liked all the veggies kids aren't supposed to like, like spinach and brocolli and carrots, those are his favorites now. So there is hope. Guest guest
Hi, Here's a tip for how I used to get veggies into kids that didn't want to eat them. Make spaghetti sauce! Grate carrots, zucchini, whatever, and put them in the sauce. Then simmer it, on very low heat, for a couple of hours. The vegies will cook down into nothing at all, just disperse invisibly into the sauce. They'll never know they're eating a healthy meal. mom to Ramona 17ds

The one thing I can remember about our talks long ago re: Ben was his food aversions. I guess time didn't help that, huh? I think this is common for some kids with DS. What does he like to eat now? is stuck on hamburgers. He wants hamburgers for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We can pass off a sausage muffin for a hamburger in the mornings. He eats a sandwich or pizza for lunch. If I make a good meal (lol), he'll eat that. But I can rarely get him to eat anything else but a hamburger when we eat out. Guest guest
I can completely relate to this. In order to maintain my son's weight, I have been supplementing his pickiness with Ensure. He's been on it for over 2 years now. I'm told that some people have been able to get their doctor to write a prescription for it and then the insurance covers the high cost. I buy it by the case at Costco... Just a thought if you are really concerned...

Guest guest
<< I always insisted my picky eaters eat no fewer than three bites >> This has always been my rule also, but then came Maverick. He actually gags and throws up, even when being bribed with ice cream! He cannot tolerate tuna casserole, or cottage cheese or foods with texture. He'll now eat the basic veggies. He'll eat alot of things if he can put Ranch or Ketchup on them. He'll eat most fast foods. And he eats yogurt. Used to be only lemon flavored, but now he has broadened his horizons to pineapple and vanilla. The only " fruit " he'll eat is watermelon and applesauce. And he eats cream cheese on toast every morning, but won't eat cereal. Over the years we have taken what he DOES eat, and had it on hand as an addition to what the family dinner was and I think he's getting a fairly nutritional balance. However, up until he was 5 we added instant breakfast to his milk for extra help.

However, I never insisted my kids clean their plates. That only makes for overweight adults. I always told them " When you are full, stop eating. " Eating slowly helps as well. Must have worked because none of my adult children, except (27, DS) are overweight. Folks with DS and a hypothyroidism have a problem no matter what you do. is taking the weight off, though. I did insist on the three bites and 9 times out of 10, the kid learned to like whatever. granny --- " Setting a good example for your children takes all the fun out of middle age.
