Hi all,

I've been diagnosed with a 3 cm fibroid as well as 3.2 cm thick uterine lining.

After this diagnosis, I found info. on iodine and became a member of this group

as well as beginning 1 tab of Iordoral, magn., vit C, and selenium. I'm also on

iron due to anemia. After beginning the iodine and accompanying supplements, I

began to feel drastically better, but my symptoms have worsened.

I am having increased symptoms, most notably super heavy periods (two months in

a row) that last for over a week, abate for a couple of days, then go on for

another week or two but not as heavy. I can't find a doctor in my area who

seems to specialize in iodine therapies, but may see one holistic doctor who is

beginning to follow the research. My regular doctor just wants to " cut " .

My questions are as follows: how do I know if the fibroid is getting worse or

if the iodine is helping? It's such a small dose, I'm thinking the fibroid is

getting worse. Have any of you seen ANY research on taking iodine while

nursing? All I can find is about what Japanese women naturally do, etc. I'm

currently nursing our 13 month old and would like to not harm her from my body

detoxing. I'm trying to lessen the nursing in an effort to naturally wean over

the next year, but I'm thinking that I'm bleeding so much that I may not have

that long before I need to do something more drastic to control this. I'm

losing around 20 oz. per month (normal is 1.5oz).

Any help/advice is more than welcome. I've just read today more about also

using Vitamin A and ATP cofactors. Is that something I need to be doing? Are

there any other lists of iodine knowledgable doctors besides the one on the

breastcancerchoices website?

Thanks,

Trisha

I had the SAME problem when I first started iodine; heavy periods. I got on

progesterone cream and everything went back to normal. I really think iodine

magnifies (for lack of a better word) a deficit in progesterone.

I don't have any suggestions for you but its good that your doing research and not letting your doctor cut our your uterus.

From what I've heard this surgery is one of the most unneccesary surgeries out there. Here is a link from Dr. Oz's show. I remember watching a full show about hysterectomies. YOu may even be able to find it on his website if you type that in there.

But I did find a small clip of it must of been another show.

Trish,

is the fibroid on the inside of the uterus? in the muscle tissue? outside of

uterus? This is not really a large fibroid and should not require any surgery

at all.

You can also check out www.fibrovan.com

I've also had success with an essential oil in shrinking fibroids.

A caution about progesterone cream (or any other transdermal preparation), for those of you who may thing you need it because the iodine shifts the balance...I am on another health-oriented list, where there is a guy who is a self-made expert on hormones (which is to say, he has done EXHAUSTIVE study on hormone balance.) He warned us on this list that people who use transdermal hormone creams tend to get those creams all over their loved ones. (You get it on your hands when rubbing it on, & then you touch things that others touch. You cuddle. You get the picture.) I, personally, have been devoted to progesterone cream for some years. But my husband recently had a saliva hormone test through Aeron Labs, & his progesterone is sky high. Every time I rubbed the stuff on myself, I managed to transfer some to him. I am now going cold turkey till the excess progesterone clears out of his system, & then I will be hormone tested & we will both start using troches for natural hormone replacement.I was sure I couldn't be harming him, since I was using such a small amount of the cream. OOPS!AnneOn May 4, 2010, at 3:34 PM, spacejunkie2001us wrote: I had the SAME problem when I first started iodine; heavy periods. I got on progesterone cream and everything went back to normal. Thanks for the replies, all. My doctor seemed to think that the fibroid WAS on

the large side?! I had one taken out two years ago that was 5cm and she thought

that was large as well. Who knows?

I've been looking into bioidentical hormones, but still need to find a doctor

who works with these and balancing the whole system. I heard of one 45 min.

from me who is also beginning to follow the iodine studies, so hopefully I'll be

able to see him soon.

In the meantime, we're considering having the less invasive D & C type surgery

just to alleviate symptoms and then wean the baby slowly over the year as I had

planned and then up the iodine levels. I know I can go on progesterone (orally)

without harm to the baby. Thanks for the insight on the cream...wow!

I think it would also be beneficial for you to add systemic enzymes, like

serrapetese, to your iodine protocol. This can eat away at the fibroids. I

don't have fibroids but I have had great success with the enzymes helping with

clearing out, what I think, is excess tissue in my uterus. My mense is extra

tissuey. It's impressive.

Trisha...

I posted a link a while ago from the iodine supplementation board on curezone

from a woman who had uterine fibriods so large that the doctor could not do a

d & c. She found out about iodine and went on a fairly aggressive program of 50mg

iodoral 4 times a day for 3 weeks and then cut back to I think 50mg daily. I'll

have to see if I can find her post on curezone again. Anyway, a few months

later she's back in the hospital for another try at a d & c and the doctor told

her when she woke up from anesthesia that the d & c was unnecessary because there

were no fibroids. Iodine does work, you probably need to increase your dose and

be sure to do your salt loading every day.

I had a fibroid removed that was reportedly the size of a grapefruit. And I am a bit surprised that they even removed yours, when it was that small. I was told that fibroid surgery could do more harm than good, & that they only removed really large ones, or ones that were badly placed (blocking the tubes, for example) to affect fertility... (Then again, different doctors have different criteria. Hard to know what is "true.")I am currently on 150 mg. of iodine, & while my thyroid nodule is shrinking (YAY!), my fibroids are not changing. Mine are big enough that I can feel them when I lie down on the bed. Yes, I grew a whole new crop after fibroid surgery. Which is what happens when you don't get to the CAUSE. One of the big problems with hysterectomy is that it removes the indicator light on the dash without putting oil in the engine, so to speak. When I realized they were just going to grow back after surgery, the doc thought that meant it was time to yank the uterus. *I* thought that meant it was time to figure out what was wrong with my health that my body kept making these tumors. Still trying to figure it out, of course. Have tried several things. My health has improved significantly, but my indicator light is still telling me that I have a problem. Hopefully the iodine will address the fibroids when it is through with the thyroid nodule...Personally, I wouldn't even have a D & C, because your periods give you information. (Not saying you shouldn't -- not a doctor, & don't know everything about your situation.)Good luck!AnneOn May 5, 2010, at 4:28 AM, love2readandlearn wrote: Thanks for the replies, all. At this point, I'm not sure what to do! Thanks for all of the thoughts and

concerns. I think the biggest issue is that I'm anemic because of all the blood

loss. I don't think they'd be wanting to remove it or even be investigating it

if it weren't for that. And I've had the same frustration with doctors wanting

to just get rid of symptoms and not look for the cause. It's that frustration

that led me down the investigative path, eventually leading me to this group!

I looked up info. on fibrovan and it seems that people get mixed results from

it. I'm suspecting a lot of that has to do with diet and iodine deficiency.

I'm wondering if correcting things with the iodine, then adding fibrovan would

help since a lot of it is digestive enzymes.

I'm beginning to think more and more that I need to get all my hormone levels

checked and go from there.

I did find one post at

http://www.mothering.com/discussions/showthread.php?t=1091794 where someone was

breastfeeding and went on 50mg Iodoral with no visible side effects in her

children. A sample size of n=1 is a bit too small for my comfort, though! By

the way, the thread on this website has been active since 2005 and has 31 pages!

Most of the information is what you can find here, but from moms with young

children point of view. I've only read a portion of the 600+ posts.

If you are willing to check into alternative medicine, homeopathy can make a huge difference when dealing with fibroids and heavy bleeding. I had these issues going on and my homeopath put me on a remedy. Within a couple of cycles my periods became normal. They also tapered off and stopped at that point, but I am 51 so that is okay! Are you willing to check into this?-KimFrom: love2readandlearn

Hi -

Is it the Iodine thread? I've read and been on that thread.

I thought I'd add a few more thoughts:

** I also asked about Ioderol and nursing and decided that anything over 12.5 mg

was too risky for my choice as I did not want to start detoxing bromide into my

breastmilk. Just because 1 person didn't notice anything I'm sorry to say

doesn't mean that there wasn't bromide in her breastmilk and there weren't any

symptoms (yet?). I wonder what kind of symptoms you would look for in a

nursling?

** I am confused as to why one would do a D & C for a fibroid? Fibroids are knit

into the uterine muscle. As far as I understand D & C's, they only scrap the

surface, and do not get into the muscle. Unless you have a internal

pedunculated fibroid, I don't see how a D & C would fix a fibroid issue. Good

drawning here to show fibroid locations:

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/medical/IM01586

** My personal experience is that I had 12 fibroids, from < 1 cm to 5 cm. This

was right before I became pregnant. All my fibroids were intramural. I used

Young Living products that I believe helped shrink and eliminate fibroids.

** However, I also believe that DIET is crucial. Even in the curezone story,

she did a 'cleanse' for a few months. Whatever she did as a cleanse could have

had the effect of eliminating fibroids. Too bad she did not include her

cleansing information. I am a bit skeptical of this story though as I find it

extremely hard to believe that the woman did not have a transvaginal ultrasound

of her uterus which can clearly show fibroids < 1 cm. I've had several of these

and it is extremely easy to see fibroids using this simple inexpensive

ultrasound test.

***** Lastly, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND getting a 2nd and even a 3rd opinion. I spent

$$$$$$ with doctors until I was finally properly diagnosed with a uterine

septum. The diagnosing doctor did a septum repair and left all fibroids. I too

have heard that uterine fibroid surgery can impair future fertility by causing

scarring problems.

*** I get emails from fibroidcure:

http://www.fibroidcure.com/a/how-to-shrink-fibroids/

There is more information here that promotes Diet as a method to deal with

fibroids.

Trisha -

I found this on the fibroidclear.com site for an herbal remedy:

Red Raspberry is used to control excessive menstrual bleeding and strengthens

and tones the uterine muscles. Red Raspberry is very helpful in supporting the

body return the reproductive organs into balance. It's anti inflammatory and

anti nausea effects makes Red Raspberry a powerful herb for menstrual problems.

Red Raspberry is a rich source of nutrients, including Calcium, Magnesium, Iron,

Potassium, Phosphorus, and Vitamins A, B, C and E. Also rich in tocopherols,

carotenoids, and natural antioxidants, Numerous studies indicate that Red

Raspberry helps to manage blood sugar levels, helping you keep your energy

levels high throughout the month

*********

I remembered that you are still nursing, so going on a cleanse is Not

Recommended.

Have you thought of acupuncture? That too might help. I'm trying to think of

all different methods that you can use that are safe for baby and yet help you

too.

I am fairly certain that Red Raspberry tea is safe when nursing. I used some of

this when pregnant.

I would still recommend adding iodine, I'm just not sure I'd feel safe enough to

add as much iodine as you would need. So that's why I'm trying to think of

additions to iodine.

Thanks again for more info!

I'm not 'afraid' of homeopathy. I actually know several people who use it

successfully. I also know of a practitioner who has said she can help. I also

know of an acupuncturist who practices homeopathy as well. I'll probably seek

him out first as I think my insurance may help with that.

My fibroid, for those who have asked, is inside the uterus and is just starting

to make it expand. The D & C type procedure, the doc called a resection and it is

not meant to get the whole fibroid. It just " cuts off the top " so to speak.

That's another reason why I'm looking into cures everywhere I can. It's amazing

to me that there are so many ways to cure these (personally, I'm finding that

there's probably a need to approach it from a couple of directions at the same

time and including iodine seems to be necessary for all of them) and I'm just

shocked at how much doctors really don't know about them! Do they just finish

medical school and quit learning?!

Thanks for the understanding and suggestions, Cheryl, concerning my nursing. We

tried to experiment with some night weaning and she just is NOT ready for that

yet without some very difficult nights. I think this is due to her teething her

molars - all four - right now.

So, now I have a lot more to look into. As for the mothering site, it was the

iodine thread I was talking about. I've also spent considerable time looking at

curezone today and learned a lot there as well.

I'll keep you gals posted!

Trisha
