Guest guest
Ann,I hope you will be able to get some good news about your daughter soon. My understanding is that the Japanese government started distributing Iodine (Potassium iodine ) already. My friends husband is in Japan business and he had started taking it yesterday. I can't get a grasp as to whether this radioactive cloud has affected her or not and was wondering if you all could give your opinions on that. Also, I know that there are specific brands or types of iodine that is suggested for use, but what if she can't get those where she is? Are there other options? At this point, would the iodine even help her as she was not able to take it preventatively? Thanks so much for your help. Guest guest
Your daughter is south of Tokyo, which is a few hundred miles south of where the radiation releases have occurred. http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Yokosuka+Naval+Base & oe=utf-8 & rls=org.mozilla:en-US\ :official & client=firefox-a & um=1 & ie=UTF-8 & sa=N & hl=en & tab=wl Point A is where your daughter is. Points B & C are the locations of compromised nuclear reactors. To my knowledge, there is no radioactive cloud. The radiation has stayed relatively close to the nuclear power plants. The weather pattern over Japan has been coming from the south so any radiation that is emitted will travel north or north-east, further away from the naval base. http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/03/13/us-japan-quake-wind-idUSTRE72C3LQ20110\ 313 Recent reports about radiation levels: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Yokosuka+Naval+Base & oe=utf-8 & rls=org.mozilla:en-US\ :official & client=firefox-a & um=1 & ie=UTF-8 & sa=N & hl=en & tab=wl Media has also reported that radiation levels briefly rose above legal limits around the plants, but that they also subsided quickly. Guest guest
Well it appears that this morning the reactor is in melt down. I did figure out that she is approximately 180 miles southeast of the reactor which is good, the wind should carry the cloud away from her. BUT as a couple of people pointed out, drinking water and milk are going to be an issue. I'm going to try to get her to take some form of iodine, whatever she can get her hands on. I'll read up on the information packet from the group and have her get something in the morning. Thanks everyone for your help. Guest guest
It was on the news this morning that thousands of Iodine tablets are being shipped to Japan for distribution.
