Guest guest
Hi Ann, I was at N.E.Baptist the other day, and couldn't remember when you'd be there! I looked all around for someone who " looked like me " ! Here's hoping that some of the people here will actually be able to meet there! I'm having hand surgery there on 3/23. I know, it's a different department. But, I'll be thinking of all you other folks who (rightly) get treatment there! Carole M.
Guest guest
Elissa, That was a really great letter! I am with you! I have never hidden my scar from scoliosis surgery! Now, the front of me is a different story. I am a walking road map! There is really only one person who ever asked about my back scar. She was a woman swimming at the " Y " , who came over to me and said, " Boy, they got you good! " . That was it! The one and only, and it didn't hurt a bit. We became fast friends. So, you go girl. And, to anyone considering a tattoo: I have no problems with them, I only hope that you know " why " you are going that route. Have fun! We only go this way once! Carole M. Guest guest
Oops! Didn't mean to imply that female scoliosis patients shouldn't wear bikinis, just that I didn't feel comfortable wearing them. However, now that I think of it, I do recall that I think I did continue to wear bikinis for a few years after my surgery. I don't really worry too much these days about the back of one piece suits since I usually tan a little and the upper part of my scar is rather thin. I've only had two people ever ask me about my scar when wearing a bathing suit: one was a woman I knew from college and one was my child's swimming instructor, neither one though was trying to be mean, just curious. I do have a problem with designers and how they design women's bathing suits vs. men's, but hey, that's a whole other topic. Oh, and I love the idea of a great big tattoo. Very cool! Guest guest
Thought I'd join in the discussion of the scars. I too have a rather noticeable scar from just below the base of my neck to right above my " crack " , a very large scar over the right hip from the donor site. I did wear a bikini as a teen to wash the car in the back yard but was too self conscious to wear it with people other then family around. I never wore dresses without a back. Ah, but now at 49 I wear whatever I want but it doesn't include a bikini--just don't have the body for it. And like Sharon's husband I'm prefers the " natural " look Joyce
Guest guest
OK, Carol, Now you have me (and everyone else?) guessing! Guest guest
Lol Carole .M For the life of me, I don't remember. Really. : ). It's been 25 years or so ago, and I have terrible case of brain fog. I am sure it will come to me. Eventually. LOL I know it was an Oriental sounding name. He was a local from Hawaii and was going to Boston to become an eye specialist. When I finally finished college and left Hawaii 4 years later, I went to Boston to look him up. I found out where he had previously worked (I spent 2 years in the Boston/Cambridge area) and low and behold. They said he went back to Hawaii to practice medicine. Most Hawaiians do. So I guess that's no big surprise. They are very close nit people. Not to mention it is one of the most beautiful places in the world to live so why would they WANT to ever leave it , right? I guess my timing is always off, Lol Guess if I stayed with him I would have been well off now and living in Hawaii. Oh well, life sure has it's twists and turns doesn't it? The reason I decided to go to Boston is because when I came back from Hawaii my parents had sold the house out from under me in NY , so I decided to take up residence in the nearest city to start a career ....which was Boston, about 3 hours from Vermont. My parents opened up a Bed and Breakfast there in Northern Vermont. While in Boston I figured I would look up my long lost love. But behold...he was gone. Oh well. Guess it wasn't meant to be. : ( I think he practiced at Mass general.?? Pardon my senior moments of brain fog. It will clear up eventually, and I can give you more detail. LOL Bye for now.....Happy Valentines Day...............Carol.....from NY >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> OK, Carol, Now you have me (and everyone else?) guessing! Here we all are in the Boston area, wondering, " What was the name of that guy? " . Are you going to give it up? Pleeeeeeeese? Carole M. the elder >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> I have one long scar from my neck to the top of my backside. When I was young and in shape I wore plenty of bikini's too. I was such a skinny little thing then. I guess my scar didn't bother me too much because I really couldn't see it. I even got a date from a young doctor while lying on my stomach sunning myself in Hawaii. He was walking by and asked me if I had the scoliosis surgery. I looked up and said yes, and that struck up a whole conversation and we ended up dating for a while until he had to leave to start his practice in Boston. So I guess you might say the scar worked in my behalf, so to speak. A real conversation piece. ! LOL I would never wear a bikini now. I am not overweight but I am definitely not fit anymore, and I am middle age. ( 47 ) I think I would probably wear one piece suits anyway at this point. . I wonder though what the new scars will look like after my A/P revision surgery? Either way, you wouldn't catch me in a bikini anymore. Not unless I could get my 19 year old body back again. LOL Such is life. : ) Carol ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the Internet in years - Juno SpeedBand! Surf the Web up to FIVE TIMES FASTER! Guest guest
To Carol in NY Oh, well, at least you had a good laugh! That is quite a story, actually! I can imagine that, after being brought up in Hawaii, it would be difficult to make a permanent change! Well, I'm sorry you missed him when you tried to look him up! BTW, all my kids were born in NY State. One in Troy, two in Queens, and one in Warwick. Yes, I made it a habit to have a child for every change of address! LOL! Looking forward to your next posting, Carole M. (the elder one)
Guest guest
Hi ! I worried too about the scaring. I am 29 and prior to my Surgery in Nov 05, I wore bikini's. This summer I have a cute little tankini type suit to keep the sun off of them for one year. Honestly, my friends say you can barely see them, maybe it's because my belly is so white compared to the rest of me!! I also am still using vitamin E twice a day on them, it's supposed to help them fail, why not? But seriously, I posted pictures of my belly scars and so did Giselle. Have a look, maybe this will help you feel better about them. a in St. Louis - finally with electricity after 4 days!!! > > Hey - it's not silly or anything - you have to think about all > of the aspects of your surgery, including what you're going to look > like after. Guest guest
Hi there, I am 34 and wore bikinis until my surgery. I had surgery at barnes Jewish in St Louis, where did you have yours a?? I see you are from St Louis. My in-laws live in Potosi about 1 1/2 se of you - they were out of power for quite a while too - these midwest summers can be brutal without air!! Anyway, - my doc did a lap on my and reused one of my appendectomy scars I already had above my belly button. The problem was that doc used the adhesive instead of stitches and my scars did not 'seal' as tight as I would have liked them, but I also don't have the railroad tracks either. It takes about a year for them to heal up good and start to disappear. I hate to say it but even though the appecdectomy scars are almost invisible (that was 4 years ago), my 5 myotomy scars are not too pretty - don't think I would want that glue or adhesive used again.... in Illinois > > > > Hey - it's not silly or anything - you have to think about > all > > of the aspects of your surgery, including what you're going to look > > like after. Guest guest
Hey !!! I had my surgery at Jewish too!! WOW:) Someone in my area! How cool is that? When did you have your surgery? Who was your doc, if you don't mind me asking. Maybe we've seen the same docs and we don't even know it!! Guest guest
Hi, I have scars from surgeries that are between 5 - 7 years old. I thought I read that iodine can help in reducing these scars. Is this the case in scars this old? Also is there a specific amount to be used and how often should it be applied? Are there any safety issues? Thanks, D
