Guest guest
Hi All, I have a chihuahua that has an abscessed tooth, currently treated with antibiotics. Can I swab with a diluted 2% Lugols or mixed with coconut oil? I will have this tooth pulled soon but have to rustle up the several hundred $$, she's too old for the " cheap " animal clinic here. (5 yr. cutoff) Or any advice, email private if it is off-Iodine topic. I do add half drop to the water bowl, but obviously didn't stop the infection... Thanks in advance, Hannah
Guest guest
Yes, Hannah, you can swab with 2% iodine. Constant contact with iodine can erode the skin, so you'd want to be careful of that (coconut oil combo seems to prevent skin issues), but the iodine can't hurt her. It's not off topic, it's iodine. -- At 12:59 PM 11/26/2010, you wrote: >Hi All, > >I have a chihuahua that has an abscessed tooth, currently treated with >antibiotics. Guest guest
Constant contact with iodine can erode the skin?! I've not heard that before...I've been using Lugol's 2% on some skin spots (a scar and an area with broken capillaries that is unsightly)...I just started on the scar recently, but I've been using it almost every day for several months on the other spot. I haven't seen any negative consequences, but is what I'm doing risky? Sherry > >Hi All, > > > >I have a chihuahua that has an abscessed tooth, currently treated with > >antibiotics. Guest guest
No, Sherry, it's only risky if it happens. Some people do not have any problem with iodine directly on the skin for long periods of time. Others may have a dermatitis reaction. Some people have reported this, which is why there is discussion about putting the Lugol's in coconut oil (or castor oil has been mentioned), because the emollient action of the oil prevents the irritation. Also, a couple of people have reported that their oral mucus membrane got sore when they were keeping a cotton ball soaked with Lugol's on an abscess. Others have no problem with that kind of prolonged contact. So to repeat, you don't have any concerns because if you were going to have a problem it would probably already be apparent. And if it does occur, it's only a surface problem, not any indication of any deeper issue or trouble. I haven't had any problems using Lugol's on my skin. I shouldn't have used the term " erosion " , it's a dermatitis. no risk. --V At 02:00 PM 11/28/2010, you wrote: >Constant contact with iodine can erode the skin?! > >I've not heard that before...I've been using Lugol's 2% on some skin spots >(a scar and an area with broken capillaries that is unsightly)...I just >started on the scar recently, but I've been using it almost every day for >several months on the other spot.
