cannot tolerate lugol's iodine

For some reason I cannot tolerate iodine. I'm pretty sure that I am not allergic

to iodine because I've never had a problem eating shellfish and have had ct

scans in the past with the iv dye and no problems. I was trying to take lugols

5% and after just two drops a day, I felt miserable. Now that I am on dessicated

thyroid (I have been on it a little over a month and I am up to one grain a day)

the reaction is even worse. I tried taking just 1/4 drops of lugols in water and

within a few hours was bedridden with a terrible swelling of my frontal sinus on

the right side and could not move my head. It passed within about 7-8 hours.

Also when I take too much iodine with the Nature-throid, I get hyper symptoms. I

am currently taking two tablets of iodemere, but I know that this is not only an

inferior source of iodine, but way too little. Here are some mitigating

circumstances that may have something to do with it, but I have no idea.

1) I have 9 root canal teeth

2) A doctor treated me for Blastocyctis Hominis ( a common parasite) back in

August with a drug called Iodoquinol (Yodoxin). I took 650 mg. three times a day

for 20 days. The drug is 62% iodine, therefore I assume that I received dose of

almost a gram of iodine a day for 20 days. I was supposed to take a second round

of the drug after a 20 day rest, but I declined because it really exacerbated my

symptoms towards the end.

3) My ferritin is low (35 ng/ml). I am taking 5 mg. of ferritin a day now.

3) I took the 24 hour saliva test and my adrenals showed fine.

4) My tpo antibodies were .9

5) My TgAb was <9 (that was as sensitive a result as the test would show)

I would like to try taking some iodoral (maybe cut the pill in quarters), but I

am afraid of the reaction. Anyone else out there have a problem similar to this

or know why I may be reacting like this?

Thank you, Barry

It sounds like you had normal detox from the iodine- are you taking the

suggested supplements with the iodine and salt to help with the bromides ect

that are being released from your body? Check the files on the side effects as

your body releases these toxins. If you are not taking the salt your body will

have trouble dealing with any dose if you have issues which you obviously have.

I took 100mg today and had headache and some other issues - but just bumped up

my salt and vit C and supplements.

Root Canal Coverup is a very good book; however, when you trim the post totally, we have no idea what you are referring to. Please leave some of the post you are replying to so we know the connection. I know some groups prefer you cull posts, but here we like to have them not trimmed because when none of the post is there for us to understand the connection it can get confusing. Thank you, Kathleen

Hi Barry,

Sounds like you are having detox symptoms. Are you taking the companion nutrients? taking the Celtic Salt? Did you do salt loading when you were feeling those symptoms? Have you read the NewMember doc and the Iodine and Salt Loading Protocol.doc in the files? These are very important to familiarize yourself with. And most important to supplement the companion nutrients and Celtic salt while taking iodine. Kathleen

thanks everyone for the suggestions. i had this reaction to the iodine prior to

joining this group and did not know about the detox symptoms. i will try it

again, slowly building up the amount of iodine, but taking the salt, etc., this

time. i did read the salt and iodine protocol, but i am a little confused. what

is the difference between the daily supplementing and the salt loading? they

look the same to me. if i understand it correctly, are you saying that i take

the 1/2 to 1 tsp. of salt everyday with my other supplements, but if i begin to

have detox symptoms from the iodine, i begin adding more salt and water until i

begin to urinate? if i am correct, how many times a day can you do this? only

once?

You have the difference between daily supplementing and salt loading correct. You do the salt loading as you stated, “until I begin to urinate”. So take ½ tsp salt and an 8 oz or so glass of water. ½ hour later do it again. Keep going until you are urinating AND your detox reaction is subsiding, you have succeeded! Then stop taking the extra salt and water. If you have to do this 3 days in a row, you are detoxing too heavily for your body to handle. You need to get your detox pathways working better and/or back down a little on the iodine. But you probably need to get your liver and gallbladder working well, then you won’t feel the detoxing symptoms as much.Donna in IL thanks everyone for the suggestions. i had this reaction to the iodine prior to joining this group and did not know about the detox symptoms. i will try it again, slowly building up the amount of iodine, but taking the salt, etc., this time. i did read the salt and iodine protocol, but i am a little confused. what is the difference between the daily supplementing and the salt loading? they look the same to me. if i understand it correctly, are you saying that i take the 1/2 to 1 tsp. of salt everyday with my other supplements, but if i begin to have detox symptoms from the iodine, i begin adding more salt and water until i begin to urinate? if i am correct, how many times a day can you do this? only once?> >> > For some reason I cannot tolerate iodine. Barry,

You said that, " I tried taking just 1/4 drops of lugols in water and within a

few hours was bedridden with a terrible swelling of my frontal sinus on the

right side and could not move my head. "

The amount of Lugol's Iodine you took was considerably less than 6 mg, less than

the amount between 6-50 mg of iodine that Dr. Brownstein has said is necessary

to release toxic halides. There is a strong possibility that your symptoms are

not related to a bromine/halide detox.

Iodine has antimicrobial properties, bacterial, viral and fungal. A reactive

inflammation " swelling " experienced from taking low dose iodine might be a

Herxheimer Reaction, a kill-off reaction, from the antimicrobial effects of the

iodine. You might have a sinus infection.

When dealing with " detox " reactions while taking iodine, especially inflammatory

reactions, it might be important for some individuals to consider the

possibility that iodine might be provoking an antimicrobial effect, symptoms

which can profile as an inflammation or " swelling. "

Hi Barry,Another thought is that sometimes if people take too little, they have very drastic symptoms because the body is trying so hard to get it. Some people have reported that when they take extremely small amounts, like you did, they had bad reactions, but when they upped it to 25 mg or more, they didn’t have the reactions.
