I took Thyrolar (T3 and T4 only) for many years. It seemed to work better than Armour thyroid. When Thyrolar was taken off the market, I switched to Armour and gained about 25 pounds.Does anyone know why this might happen?I have heard that over the counter desiccated thyroid has no T3 and T4. It seems that it might make sense to supplement Thyrolar with such a product in order to add T1, T2, and possibly unknown advantageous factors that are not contained in Thyrolar, without changing the T3 and T4.Does anyone have any relevant ideas, understanding, or experience concerning this approach?Does anyone have a brand recommendation for desiccated thyroid without T3 and T4?

Thanks, Bethann. You've given me a lot of info to consider.

I do think I'm " menopausal, " despite my doctor saying my estrogen levels are

" normal. " My period, in January, was basically non-existent. I spotted a

little on my TP, for a day, and that was it. And I had a month, last year, that

was that way, too.

Then Feb's was the usual 3-4 days. Then this month, it was 3 days exactly. I

did't even have the usual " trail-off, " which is just a little spotting on the

TP. It just quit, altogether, after the 3 days. And it was lighter than last

month.

So I tend to think the doc is wrong on me not being " menopausal. " And the way

that my emotions are so " out of whack. " And I seem to get these weird symptoms

right AFTER my period. That seems to point to menopause, to me. It wouldn't be

hypothyroid. That would be all the time, not just a few days a month.

But I know the two conditions are so similar to each other. From what I have

read on the web, a LOT of the symptoms for thyroid and menopause overlap each

other.

I haven't had any " hot flashes, " but I think I've had a couple of light " night

sweats. " Twice I've woke up with the top of my gown a little damp, like I

sweated (right word?) a little, during the night.

The symptom that gets me the most is when I'll feel suddenly really tired, like

all my energy just suddenly went through the floor. It did that about a week

ago, right after my period ended. Then I had it again for the next 2-3 days.

Now, I'm not getting the tiredness in the afternoon, but I'm still getting the

" weepies. " And the full and bloated feeling after eating maybe half of my

" brunch. " I'm talking like half of a cucumber, a few strawberries, and a small

chicken thigh. Sometimes I just get in a few bites, and have to stop for

awhile.

Then I sometimes get these " headaches " in the back of my head. Sometimes, it

has felt like I had a ton of water built up in the back of my head. But a

couple nights ago, it was just a feeling of " pressure " back there, and it lasted

most of the evening. I don't get headaches, so it was very weird for me to have

that. And worrisome, 'cause I don't know what caused it.

Now, I know sometimes people will get weird symptoms when first starting on a

drug. So maybe it was the thyroid pill causing it. I don't know. I also had a

weird sensation of " numbness " in my L foot, the other night, and that was very

scary, too. But it went away, after I got done with dinner and sat back down,

and hasn't been back.

Maybe these are " detox " symptoms? As the T4 pill is having an effect on my

thyroid?

Sometimes, I wish I could just go back to being " blissfully ignorant, " like I

used to be, before I started learning all about health and nutrition. Now, some

days, I feel like there's too much to watch out for in our food, and too many

things to take supplements for. Some days, I get to feeling so overwhelmed by

everything, especially when I'm not feeling good, in the middle of the day.

It's weird how it's usually only in the afternoon that I feel the worst, after

eating my first bites of food. I don't have trouble at dinnertime, or

afterward. Then I'm fine, thank goodness.

I've dropped over 90 lbs this past year, and I feel like I've messed myself up,

sometimes, and that's why I'm having so much trouble. I don't regret dropping

the weight. I still have another 100 to go, but am taking a " break, " right now,

while I try to get things figured out. Then I'll " start up " again, and work on

taking off more. My weight is holding exactly where it should be, staying

within about a half a lb, usually, each day.

I hate having to take a " break, " but I'm ok with it, right now, with all this

" weirdness " going on. And I feel a lot better than I used to, 3 years ago, when

I was over 135 lbs heavier, and decided to change everything. And I'm

definitely enjoying the 90 lbs I took off this past year. So I'm ok with

" holding " for awhile.

But I sure want to get these weird symptoms figured out before I start going

down again. So, while I hate having to take the thyroid pill again, I'm ok with

it, for awhile, as long as it doesn't cause any adverse symptoms.

But I do plan to continue looking into the benefits of dessicated thyroid, and

iodine.

So, if you, or anyone else, have any other ideas, I'm all " ears, " so to speak.

Oh, and sorry this got so long, again. I can type as fast as I can think, so

it's easy to get " carried away, " sort of.

You know, when I used to take the thyroid pill, it said on the label to take

either in the morning or at night. Now it just says to take in the morning, and

to wait a half hour before eating, and to take any iron or calcium supps 4 hours

later. Don't know why.

I wonder how the people who take it at night " do better. " How can one tell?

And I wonder why that would be? Maybe because you're not eating at night, so

the pill can be better absorbed or utilised?

I think I remember having to wait like 2 hours after eating, if you take the

pill at night. But this new pill doesn't say anything about it.

So do you remember what you read about why people taking it at night seem to do

" better? "

I just went through the full panel of tests (saliva, blood, urine) for hormone

levels. I spent years piece-mealing my own treatment but, to no avail.

My estrogen levels were normal as well, but my progesterone was basically non

existent, which makes you 'estrogen dominant'. I'm 50 years old.

After all these tests, I finally went on a dessicated thyroid, compounded

progesterone cream and compounded progesterone oral capsules. I'm also on DIM

and my doc put me on 12.5mg iodoral for 3 days then said up it to 25mg. I

take/do these things above, along with Vitamin C, Selenium, varying B's, CoQ10,

probiotics and fish oil.

I feel great :)

When I first started iodoral several months ago, because I too was absolutely

riveted with the research I was reading on it, I started out rather soon with

50mg/day. I was not on a thyroid hormone and what happened to me was, all the

hypo symptoms got much worse. That's what drove me to a 'functional medicine'

doctor and drove me off iodoral initially.

My intent is to be back up to 50mg a day, but I think there's alot of value in

getting there much slower than I originally thought. Possibly because of how

efficiently it makes you detox that you do not want to do that too fast,

especially if you're not doing the companion nutrients which I wasn't at the

time.

On another, but related note, I cannot say enough good about magnesium. I've

been taking higher doses of mag malate by Source Naturals for several years now,

because my husband had fibromyalgia. Without a doubt, when I started taking it

several huge things happened. The first is, I never had to go back on anti

depressants/anti anxiety. The next are that I never had to go back to the

chiropractor, massage therapist or accupuncturist. Prior to mag, I was

consistently doing all of the therapies (every single week) because I could NOT

relax. I could not get rid of body soreness.

Magnesium makes 300+ other enzymes, aminos, supplements, etc., work in your

body. It is the counter to calcium, which makes your muscles constrict. I

contend that one of the main reasons fibro is so prevalent in women is the huge

influx of calcium supplementation without any talk of taking mag.

Anyway, I love this group and feel like I've learned a huge amount of info and

I'm able to help others somewhat as well.

.....oh, let me also mention that my husband had terrible night sweats, restless

leg and leg cramps and they ALL went away when we went on the 800-900 mg of mag

malate.

If you all buy this product by source naturals, the dosage is 1250mg for 3

tablets, which breaks down to 425mg of mag and the remainder is malic acid, from

citrus fruit/crab apples. So, the dosage we worked up to was 2 tabs/3x per day,

on bowel tolerance.
