Guest guest
In general, you want to do everything possible to support detox. In specific, there is a procedure called a liver cleanse or gall bladder cleanse. (Now that you have lost your gall bladder, received wisdom is that you need the cleanse MORE. The process that messed up your gall bladder is still messing up your liver.) Actually, there are several such. You probably need one more than most, but some of them are rather -- intense. I think that in your case, you might want to start with something gentle, & work your way up?Milk thistle herb is good for the liver (if you can tolerate it.) There are other herbs that are good for the liver, but milk thistle is the one that is usually recommended first.Enzymatic Therapy makes a liver cleanse product (I think it is called Complete Liver Cleanse) that you take twice a day for 2 weeks. It seemed pretty gentle to me, but I didn't have an achy liver when I took it. (And I think it contains milk thistle, as many liver products do, so if you have a problem with milk thistle, you have a problem.)The more intense liver cleanses involve taking juices or supplements to soften up the gall stones, taking an epsom salts solution to relax all the ducts & help the stones pass, & a large drink of olive oil to prompt an expulsion of bile. (you can find details in the archives.) From all accounts, you spend a day on the pot, not feeling so great, but then people claim you feel WONDERFUL. As I say, I don't think I would start there. I'd keep the training wheels on for a while. And in the meantime, you should be doing all the other good stuff that promotes detox -- plenty of fresh, pure water; keep the bowels moving; FIR sauna & /or detoxing baths; rebounding to pump the lymphatic system; etc.As for taking the Lugol's, we generally always tell people it is good to start, but you want to be really careful about taking all the companion nutrients (make sure you are taking all of them before you take any iodine), & you probably want to start very slowly & work your way up, so you can back off if you have any problems. Since you test low for selenium, you might want to take the higher dose of selenium. And since you are so toxic, I would take the highest dose of C you can tolerate, because that helps with detox.Alpha Lipoic Acid can also chelate mercury, which might be why you didn't do too well with it.B12 is hard to get through food or swallowed pills. They usually recommend a sublingual tablet or spray. (Some of the newest -- & spendiest! -- variations are liposomal to improve absorption even more.)The trick with detox is that it is a 2-stage process. First you stir up the toxins, & then you flush them out. You don't want to stir up more than you can flush out. Some things get flushed out in urine, some in stool, some in sweat. If any of the outlets get backed up, all the bad stuff you stirred up has no place to go. So you don't want to stir up more than you can flush.AnneOn Mar 7, 2011, at 3:35 PM, alagonza2000 wrote: I didn't want to highjack someone else's post but now I am confused... Guest guest
Hi Lori, I started taking Iodoral a year ago. I started on just 12.5 mg and slowly worked my way to 100 MG. When I started, I basically felt terrible. While I had always been " healthly " I suddenly had started to feel horrible -- exhausted, achy, achy liver as well. While I don't drink and had always eaten well, my liver had just gotten beaten up perhaps from being undiagnosed hypothyroid for about 8 or 9 years. Anyway, in addition to the iodoral, I really focused on getting my liver and detox systems working. I started Milk Thistle and would definitely recommend that -- it is a slower process but after a few months I did really feel like I was getting a leg up on my liver function. One important thing for me on the iodine was to make sure I was always taking the selenium (plus all the other companion nutrients) -- I had a period at the beginning where I missed the selenium and it really impacted my detox. The detox became more severe and longer lasting, bloating, weight gain, etc. After a few months of milk thistle I added dandelion root which is also recommend for the liver -- that also helped. That plus trying to eat healthy, liver friendly foods and lots and lots of water and avoiding all alcohol. By the time I had my liver function tested in December it was quite good and by that time the pain, sleeplessness and bloating, and belly fat had all been greatly reduced. I still only have the very, very occasional glass of wine -- I just don't feel like I can tolerate much there. I hope to now do the liver cleanse this spring if my work schedule allows. Best of luck, Lexy > > I didn't want to highjack someone else's post but now I am confused... > > I have an achy liver- had my gallbladder removed in July. > > AST 54H (10-30) > ALT 83H (6-40) > > These go up and down all the time- my doctor has been testing me monthly. > > I just bought the Lugol's this weekend, started selenium and already take B's and Vitamin C. Guest guest
Glutathione is essential for detoxification and other life sustaining functions in the body ... if you cannot tolerate even small doses of NAC then it is important to supply pre-cursors. I have corresponded with several people who are super sensitive to supplements, including NAC & alpha lipoic acid. At some point they came to the conclusion that they had to try them and began taking only grains each day or every other day. It took one gal over a year to work up to a small but somewhat normal amount of alpha lipoic acid. This may or may not be an option for you. A good article about glutathione: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dr-mark-hyman/glutathione-the-mother-of_b_530494.h\ tml Iodine will chelate heavy metals including mercury. I have read that selenium binds to mercury and helps to take it out of the body. (Anne, others - do you know?) It kinda looks like one way or another the heavy metals and mercury are going to be mobilized ... the important thing is that you have ways to bind them and carry them out of the body at a rate that you can tolerate. Nothing worse that mobilizing a heavy metal to circulate around and have it end up in another location of the body... Some additional suggestions for the liver enzymes ... beet tops & bottoms, beet root powder, licorice root is also highly regarded for liver repair but is cautioned if one has high blood pressure, and if milk thistle is also difficult for you perhaps starting with tiny, tiny amounts and building up. You may do well to focus on your liver and other detox pathways for a time before starting the Lugols. > > I didn't want to highjack someone else's post but now I am confused... Guest guest
Found this article on "Iodine & Chelation,"http://www.alkalizeforhealth.net/Liodine2.htmbut I am still confused. My understanding has always been that chelators have to have certain chemical properties that iodine doesn't have. There is evidence that iodine & other minerals increase the ability to excrete heavy metals but that is not necessarily the same thing as chelation. As we keep saying, the body has different ways to address toxins, which it uses when it is healthy enough. My best guess has always been that iodine supports one or more of the natural detox pathways in the body in such a way that they can handle more heavy metals. Chelation is one sort of detox, but not necessarily the same sort as Iodine. I think. Maybe... While iodine may help you excrete/detox more heavy metals, it is not a chelator according to the definition of chelation. A chelator is a particular sort of molecule, that interacts with heavy metals in a particular way. (Look it up on Wikipedia.)There is documentation that some people excrete more mercury & other heavy metals while on the iodine protocol. It can help you get rid of them. But I don't think it is technically a chelator. Is that as clear as mud?And by the way, NAC IS a glutathione precursor. (The semantics of this stuff is very confusing.) NAC is one of the substances your body can use to make glutathione. So is vitamin C. (And alpha lipoic acid, too, I think.) If you are going to try to take pure glutathione, you need to try a liposomal version, or nebulize it, or try a topical cream, to bypass the digestive tract. Or you need to take one or more of the precursors. Some of the glutathione precursors (like NAC) contain sulfur, & if you have problems with the sulfur compounds, molybdenum sometimes helps.Just as you can get into trouble taking iodine if you don't have enough selenium on-board, other minerals need to be balanced. If you have too much calcium & not enough magnesium, you can get into trouble. (And sometimes there is more than one interaction, which gets awfully confusing! For example, to use calcium properly, you need not just magnesium, but D3 & K2.) For some people, there is an imbalance when they add sulfur without molybdenum.AnneOn Mar 7, 2011, at 5:52 PM, baxrox wrote: Glutathione is essential for detoxification and other life sustaining functions in the body ... if you cannot tolerate even small doses of NAC then it is important to supply pre-cursors. Guest guest
Glad that you brought this up ~ like you I have found differing terminology and share the question of does it chelate or excrete. I will try to use the word excrete or excretion in the future because it is less controversial. And yes, I too am aware that NAC " is " a precursor to glutathione ... I failed to insert the word " other " in front of precursors. But again am glad that you bring it up for clarification. Have not read that Vitamin C is a precursor to glutathione ... but have read that glutathione will protect and recycle vitamin C. Newer articles indicate that vitamin C recycles glutathione so they seem to be synergistic at any rate. Oh the semantics again ... is a precursor the same as a recycler? According to one definition a precursor is : A biochemical substance, such as an intermediate compound in a chain of enzymatic reactions, from which a more stable or definitive product is formed. > > > > > > I didn't want to highjack someone else's post but now I am > > confused... > > > > > > I have an achy liver- had my gallbladder removed in July. > > > > > > AST 54H (10-30) > > > ALT 83H (6-40) > > > > > > These go up and down all the time- my doctor has been testing me > > monthly. > > > > > > I just bought the Lugol's this weekend, started selenium and > > already take B's and Vitamin C. Guest guest
Just my take; a chelator is usually/always (?) an amino acid, which BINDs to the substance, so that it can be drawn out of the cells, and 'harmlessly' (because its 'bound')eliminated from the body. Would assume that an 'excreter' would promote elimination of the substance, but not neccesarily involve binding.Maybe iodine is an excreter for the other halides, as it 'pushes' them out, (or preferentially keys into the receptors, keeping these other halides from getting in in the first place) but it cetainly doesn't BIND to them, or carry them out. Precursor is a neccesary ingredient.Got to have flour, to make bread. Not sure of an apropriate analogy of a recycler, other than SSRI's. 5htp or tryptophan is a precursor, (along with REM sleep) for the production of seratonin.SSRI's are THOUGHT ro work by 'recycling' the existing seratonin. Again, just my take, Jim > > > > > > > > I didn't want to highjack someone else's post but now I am > > > confused... > > > > > > > > I have an achy liver- had my gallbladder removed in July. > > > > > > > > AST 54H (10-30) > > > > ALT 83H (6-40) > > > > > > > > These go up and down all the time- my doctor has been testing me > > > monthly. > > > > > > > > I just bought the Lugol's this weekend, started selenium and > > > already take B's and Vitamin C.
