Guest guest
I am sure I read that iodine in larger amounts raises the progesterone levels in your body, so that is probably what is causing the weight gain. Engtovo Re: Weight gain and Iodine Posted by: "lookonthebriteside " slehr05 (DOT) com lookonthebriteside Thu Jan 21, 2010 6:22 pm (PST) Actually, I thought that when others mentioned what I called "silent" detox, it meant that they were detoxing without any symptoms. In other words detox doesn't always have symptoms...It may be going on when we don't even know. Is my understanding correct? I think the idea that weight gain is a detox symptom just arose yesterday. If we recognize it as a symptom (which seems reasonable), then it's not really silent...It would be a big deal to me!Regardless, extra salt and vitamin C are only warranted when actual symptoms of detox are present (which would include weight gain)?Sherry

Guest guest
When I used progesterone cream for hot flushes (natural) I put on weight and couldn't lose weight until I stopped it. Guest guest
Is it alright to only take iodine occasionally? Anne, How much iodine were you taking when you gained weight? How much did you gain? Were you taking the companion supplements at the time of the weight gain? Guest guest
Hi Anne, It seems like I have read about a woman's body converting progesterone to estrogen if the liver is clogged. I think I had similar problems with Progest-E. I also had some problems several months ago when upping Iodoral to 100 mg - got and kept respiratory infection for over a month and had to back off. Am now on 50 of Lugol's in a.m. on empty stomach (thanks to a previous poster who recommended this) as well as Iodoral 50 mg several hours later with morning meal. Have noticed some more hormonal issues, but I am 53-years-old. Does not seem like as many as before. Have been taking a lot of herbs to support the liver over past few months and taking bitters with meals, which supposedly helps detox the liver. Am feeling better on the total 100 mg daily. Do not have money for labs or MD visits. Could barely take a few drops of Lugol's two years ago - it knocked me on my butt, so I thought there was something wrong with it. That was long before coming to this group and learning so much about Iodine. Lugol's makes my skin about as soft as Prolamine Iodine, moreso than Iodoral. Guest guest
I agree with this Bruce. Weight gain is not something that I should be considered a typical side effect of iodine supplementation. As for me, I probably would have been a little hesitant to start iodine too knowing some had gained weight, but the evidence that I needed it was so overwhelming that I still would have started it anyway. Most women struggle with their weight anyway, but if you add on to that being hypothyroid, middle aged, stressed out, estrogen dominant, and eating a typical American diet, our metabolisms are already at a crawl. Just for the record, I lost weight since starting the protocol in September. I am now down about 15 lbs. I have been on 50mg Iodoral for 6 weeks. I did have a little spike during Christmas but I’m back to losing weight. I no longer take Synthroid (stopped cold turkey a year ago). I don’t know what my numbers are now since I’m in the Twin Cities area and can’t find a doctor who’ll prescribe desiccated thyroid anyway. I’m feeling so much better now than when I was on Synthroid, and I’m hoping to be able to continue with my weight loss. I’d also like to thank the group and Steph for all this valuable information on iodine and companion nutrients that have transformed my life, and my kids’ lives. Guest guest
That sounds great, good to hear a good report! Keep on keeping on Related, I was just reading the below, quoting the good part but, not adding a link unless requested because its written by a dr into drugs and who knows little, but the little below is a heads up on why to check reverse t3; " We had one person who was eating 800 calories a day after having gastric bypass and she was still gaining weight. Nobody believed that was all she was eating until they put her in the hospital and monitored her food intake. They insisted her thyroid was fine, as she had a normal TSH, T4 and T3. When we checked her reverse T3, however, and it was over 800 and her leptin was 75. We checked her metabolic rate and it was 45% below normal. Dieting alone would, of course, never work with such a patient. Also, toxins such as biphenyl-A can block the thyroid receptors everywhere in the body except for the pituitary, which has different receptors. So due to the ubiquitous nature of these toxins, I believe that everyone has a relative deficiency of thyroid activity that is not detected by the TSH. People blame food intake and lack of exercise for the obesity problem in this country, but I think a major problem is the thyroid-disrupting toxins, as well as stress... " Interesting, and may be helpful for some. Bruce ----- Original Message ----- From: Loralee Ahmann I agree with this Bruce. Guest guest
Interesting, Bruce...But what would one need to do in order to get rid of these thyroid-disrupting toxins? I'm assuming that these are not the same type of toxins (halides) that are affected by iodine supplementation. > > That sounds great, good to hear a good report! Guest guest
Not halides no; The doctor actually spelled it wrong where I quoted him. lol " In the final weeks of the Bush administration, FDA managers initiated another round of research, a move that critics dismissed as a delaying tactic that served the chemical industry's interest. " What is it that we don't know? " said University of Missouri biologist Frederick Vom Saal, head of a research team that pioneered research on low-dose BPA toxicity. " You can always find out something else, but basically, we know enough to take action now. There is a reasonable certainty of harm. " Frederick Vom Saal I sent a link a while back where he was interviewed by PBS, interesting, the chem companies tried to hush them up and buy him off even. EWG renewed its pressure on infant formula and canned food manufacturers to use non-BPA food packaging. http://www.ewg.org/chemindex/chemicals/bisphenolA http://www.thedailygreen.com/environmental-news/latest/bisphenol-a-47091707 Has lots and shows the code used on the bottom of plastic containers to show which are free of " that " chemical. Guest guest
Thanks Sherry, I started out on a 12.5 Iodoral pill cut in half, so 6.25mg, since I was a little scared of the detox. I misunderstood the need for the companion nutrients and didn’t start them right away, thinking they were only in case I had symptoms. That was my bad since I hadn’t done enough reading at that point. You really need to be supplementing with Selenium when taking iodine or you could damage your thyroid. I went to 12.5mg the next week and had some pretty uncomfortable thyroid swelling for about a week. I also had heart palps then and sweating (which I couldn’t ever do). I had to back off a couple days due to a brassy taste, which got better after I started all the companion nutrients and started salt loading a couple weeks later after I located the sea salt. It took me about a month to feel OK on the 12.5 so I moved to 25mg. I stayed on 25 for about another 5 weeks, during which time I noticed complete resolution of my uncomfortable fibrocystic breast issues! From then I went rather effortlessly to three and then 4 pills, 50 mg, within a week. For me the higher dose is easier, and Steph said that with Hashimotos people have more problems on the lower doses. I might have had that but I wouldn’t know since my endo never checked anything but TSH. I think now that maybe my expectation that I would lose weight may have helped it happen. The mind is a very powerful thing. I wondered if anyone knows what happened in the Iodine Project with respect to weight issues.
