Guest guest
I had a sore throat after taking iodine for about 8 months. It'll go away. Mine did. My thyroid swelled and my throat was sore but I was happy it was swelling becuase to me that meant it was starting to absorb the iodine. I waited it out, still took 50 mg a day and the sore throat and the swelling went away. from IllinoisFrom: <beth.abate@...>To: iodine Sent: Fri, October 29, 2010 6:31:34 AMSubject: Iodine loading test questions Hi there, I did an iodine patch test a week or so ago and based on that decided to get a test kit from Hakala for the Spot and Loading tests. I did it yesterday and took the Iodoral capsule. I actually felt better yesterday than I have for a while. Don't know if it was coincidental or not. Later in the day I began to develop a sore throat. It didn't seem to be near my thyroid, more up high in the front right under my jaw line in front of the lymph nodes. It is a little tender there. I do seem to have a little hoarseness this morning now too. Other than that I feel O.K. (normal for me at least). There seems to be a lot of conflicting info about iodine and thyroid. I will be surprised if my Iodine does not come back deficient. I have recently discovered that I have an RT3 issue as well as Hashi's antibodies (high but within range). My adrenals have issues too. I'm still trying to find a doctor to help me, but I think I may be Hypo-pituitary and that is the main cause of my Adrenal problems. I'm going to get an ACTH Stim test. How do you feel iodine would affect my situation, esp. given the sore throat after taking the Iodoral pill for the test? Will the loading test give me the info I need to make a good decision. Thanks for any info, Beth
Guest guest
Perhaps the location that you are speaking of is one of the salivary glands. Here is a link that will give you a sketch and some information about things that can happen with salivary glands: http://www.entassociates.com/salivary_glands.htm. If any of this sounds possible you might also do a search for salivary duct stones and/or tonsilloliths. These stones are said to be made up of minerals but there is also mention of bacteria. One thought as to how this might be related to your intake of iodine is that in some cases iodine increases salivary excretions and if you have an issue with the salivary glands or their ducts a dry throat might occur which then would become sore. > > Hi there, > > I did an iodine patch test a week or so ago and based on that decided to get a test kit from Hakala for the Spot and Loading tests. Guest guest
Let me make sure I understand this correctly: 1) Empty bladder first thing in the morning 2) Take 50mg Iodoral 3) Collect 1st sample of urine at the next bathroom break for baseline 4) After 24 hours, collect 2nd urine sample first thing in the morning for " loading " Am I correct? Is it OK to store urine at room temperature? Thanks! > > Yes when you start the test day you: > > 1. Arise in the morning and urinate. > 2. Take 50 mgs of Iodoral > 3. Collect urine from this point on until first urine of the morning. > > I have had to do this several times and I keep the collection container in a cooler on ice in the bathroom during the night in case I had to get up. > > Buist, ND HC > > > Iodine loading test questions > > > > What exactly does " 24 hour urine " mean? Do I need to avoid seafood and any food that may have trace iodine in it during the test? > > Thanks! >

Yes, you urinate first thing in the morning, but you SAVE a sample of that urine. Put it in the fridge until you are done with the test. Dr. Flechas' instructions are to fill a small bottle from that first urine and discard the rest. Put the small bottle in the refrigerator. Then you take your 50 mg of Iodoral. After that, you collect your urine for 24 hours. Dr. Flechas' lab sends you a collection cup and a plastic bottle to save the urine in. When you're done, all 24 hours worth of urine is in the bottle, in the refrigerator. From that collection, mixed together, you fill another small bottle and throw the rest away. You wind up with two small bottles. One, with the original morning sample, and the other with the 24 hour sample with iodoral. The lab will measure how much your 24 hour sample contains iodine, compared to the original sample. Yes, you must store the urine in the refrigerator. The entire 24 hours collection, as you add to it. Keep both the original sample and the 24 hour collection bottle in the refrigerator. Keep the sample cold until ready to mail. Keep it in a paper bag, or plastic, just don't mistake it for salad dressing. The point of this test is, they measure how much iodine your body retains during the 24 hours after taking 50mg Iodoral. What your body doesn't need it urinates out. So, that is why YOU WILL NOT OVERDOSE WITH IODORAL, because the very accuracy of the test depends on your body getting rid of what it doesn't need! People seem to miss this obvious detail, especially doctors who are uninformed entirely. Good luck. Marji
Guest guest
Do different labs use different methodologies for the test? I just received the test kit from Hakala. The instructions say I need to: 1) Empty bladder first thing in the morning into the toilet. 2) Take 50mg Iodoral. 3) Collect urine for 24 hours. 4) Measure total volume. 5) Shake the jar and pour into respective vials. > > > > Let me make sure I understand this correctly: > > > > 1) Empty bladder first thing in the morning > > 2) Take 50mg Iodoral > > 3) Collect 1st sample of urine at the next bathroom break for baseline > > 4) After 24 hours, collect 2nd urine sample first thing in the morning for " loading " > > > > Am I correct? > > > > Is it OK to store urine at room temperature? > > > > NO, that is not correct, you are missing the first step. Guest guest
What are you comparing this to? These are the instructions for 24 hour loading tests as defined by Dr. Abraham.
