It can temporarily but the effect is only about 72 hours if it does.

How much is " too much " ?    e.g. 100mg per day?    Or are you talking about much higher doses?At what stage do you know that your thyroid is healthy enough to not need large doses of iodine and, at this point, would you still keep taking iodine but at very low doses?

Just wondering because if large doses of iodine can suppress the thyroid, even if only for 72 hours, if you are taking the large dose daily, wouldn't this mean that your thyroid could be suppressed on an ongoing basis?

Actually after 3 years on iodine at 50 mg, my thyroid tests show I need less thyroid replacement so am taking less than I used to-so half dose . Half my thyroid seems to be working now. Been on meds 6-10 years so that surprised me and the dr. Pam
