Guest guest
Did they run the Free T3 and Free T4 levels? Those are better indicators of thyroid status but her TSH looks pretty high. I know kids ranges are high but TSH isn't a great determinant of thyroid function as it is a pituitary hormone. Steph My little girl's TSH results I had my one little girl tested again. She is gluten and soy free for overa year now.Her TSH came back as 4.93. Last year it was 5.54. Also, they told me herplatelets came back at 480 which I don't know much about it, but it is highthey told me.She is 6. Her birthday is in October and she is quite tiny. That is whatconcerned me and the reason I had her tested. Please provide suggestions as to what I should do. I hate for her to go onthyroid medication.Thank you.Lori
Guest guest
They only ran T4 and I was concerend that they should have run the T3 as well. Her T4 they told me looked fine. It was 1.21. She is not very tall at all. Actually, my three year old is nearly as tall as her already - even the hand/feet size are nearly the same! Her hair is very thin and really doesn't grow. She is a cutie though and such a sweet little thing! Should my next step be to take her to a specialist? My son goes to CHOP in Philadelphia to see an endocronologist so we are already going there. I just don't want her to go on anything synthetic. Thanks Steph! Guest guest
No, none of my children were ( I suspect possible Celiac), but all tummy aches went away - including my stomach pain when we went gluten free. I did that shortly after my son was diagnosed with Type 1 and did some research. My children actually told me that they had tons of tummy aches when they ate gluten and I didn't realize they were all so sick. Once, when my little guy had gluten (a year ago at Easter) he became very sick and threw up within 15 minutes and had awful diarrhea! All his/my skin problems also went away. Guest guest
The growth issue could definitely be Celiac, but if gluten is removed totally, growth should be quite noticeable quickly. Hypothyroidism could also account for delayed growth and thin hair. You can have DNA testing done for Celiac that doesn't require going back on gluten. My daughter's TSH was a little over 5 when she started on iodine. She went soy free first, then gluten free and within about a year and a half her thyroid test results were all at good levels.LinnOn Feb 9, 2011, at 7:13 PM, Lori@... wrote: No, none of my children were ( I suspect possible Celiac), but all tummy aches went away - including my stomach pain when we went gluten free. Guest guest
That sounds like either severe intolerance or celiac. Either way it's good you took them off. How about dairy? That can be a problem for some kids too. Guest guest
I did notice her growing more since she went gluten free. We are also soy free. Even at church, they were surprised how much she grew over the summer. Her hair is still thin. It grew a little more than what it had since going off of gluten, but just very thin (unless that is just genetics - my husband has thinner hair - just not that thin). The only reason I didn't test for Celiac was the expense involved. Where is the DNA test done and do you have an idea how much it would cost? I was diagnosed with a milk protein allergy as as little girl. I certianly want to consider iodine for her as well. Thanks Linn. Guest guest
I'm thinking there could also be a dairy allergy. I noticed how they get congested and cough after having ice cream at their grandmas and worry about that. I have a dairy allergy and that's what would happen to me after having any milk product. They drink goats milk here at home. That doesn't seem to bother them. At least I don't notice the congestion and coughing like when they have ice cream/cows milk. Guest guest
What do you do for the mercury? Will the iodine help remove the metals? I could also have her hair tested. I have a bunch of amalgams yet and the dentist (a holistic dentist) doesn't recommend taking them out yet at this point. She hasn't even had hers taken out. I've also read and researched that there is a possiblity of having problems from it. What are your thoughts? I will have her tested for all those. Guest guest
Lori, since iodine deficiency is widespread, you might want to consider it for all your children. It will make them so much healthier for life. It could be the gluten issue plus hypoT as well, they are not mutually exclusive. I'm not sure what good a diagnosis of celiac is since isn't the gluten-free diet the only real treatment for it anyway? best wishes, -- At 08:11 PM 2/9/2011, you wrote: >I did notice her growing more since she went gluten free. Guest guest
I took 50 mgs Iodoral in the beginning of my journey. I was fighting cancer and had severe adrenal fatigue. We worked for 6 mos just to get me stable. Then I went to a holistic dentist and removed 11 amalgams and a root canal tooth over a 4 week period. I felt a lot better after removing them. Before I had extreme fatigue and brain fog. I couldn't make a decision on anything. Since I was poisoned so were my children. It's a complex issue and not something that you can give a flat response for. We did an OATS test for my son because he was the one with the most issues. He did not grow for 2 years (finally had him dx'd at 7 yrs) and when we got him on Armour he started to grow - a lot. We took him off gluten and then dairy and he became even less ADD. You can see his test changes on my website at www.naturalthyroidchoices.com You really need a holistic doc to help you with your daughter. Steph My little girl's TSH results I had my one little girl tested again. She is gluten and soy free for overa year now.Her TSH came back as 4.93. Last year it was 5.54. Guest guest
I agree . We didn't get a definitive dx of celiac for my children yet they did better w/o it. So we just pulled them off. I have read that there may be some issues with insurance if you have a dx because it makes you at a higher risk for x, y, z - you fill in the blank. So personally I didn't push it. Guest guest
yes, gluten free is the only way to go - with a gluten intolerance or Celiac. Even if we are not Celiac (I will never be certain), being gluten free will keep us from actually getting the disease. Yes, I agree, iodine would be great for all the children. I just don't know what dosage to give them. I have children ages 11, 9, 6 and 3. My 11 year old is the one with juvenile diabetes (Type 1) that is off of insulin and the 6 year old is the one having some thyroid trouble. Guest guest
oh, that is funny!! :-) We always ate goat milk cheese as well - very yummy! I don't get to eat it any longer, but I always really enjoyed it! Lori Re: My little girl's TSH results>>>>That sounds like either severe intolerance or celiac. Guest guest
I might have to look into doing the same thing. I've thought about removing a root canal tooth becuase of the metal in there as well. Can you tell me why you chose to remove it? I know I also experience fatigue. It's very difficult getting up in the morning. What is the OATS test? I'm going to look at your web site also to see how your son progressed. That's wonderful! I know removing gluten did help her somewhat with growth, but she is still quite small for her age and already wrote my naturopath about her and will be talking to her on the phone tomorrow. I felt a lot better after removing them. Before I had extreme fatigue and brain fog. I couldn't make a decision on anything. Since I was poisoned so were my children. It's a complex issue and not something that you can give a flat response for. We did an OATS test for my son because he was the one with the most issues. Guest guest
It is. I just heard Dr. Sears today on Fox news discussing the importance of Omega 3's for children. I use it for all my baking as well. I also use coconut oil and would love to get some of the coconut cream - sounds so yummy! :-) You can make ice cream with it....yum! Guest guest
Lori, I have a 14 y/o daughter who has many of these issues with low iodine, adrenal fatigue (and a reverse Cortisol curve meaning she is really awake late at night), gluten free since July, Diary free for several years.... But what has most driven the health questions that I have are Chronic daily headaches that she has. She was really low on Vit. D and that is so essential for many body processes! Her doctor runs a full blood panel, urine, and we did the adrenal saliva test, so he starts looking at the whole body and what is high/low. Many of these issues we started working on when she was around 8 or so... but have not really budged the headaches, and only found the gluten issues this summer. Her Doctor is a chiropractor with a degree in nutrition and biochemistry. He believes in slow, gentle healing as it involves detoxing the system and you do not want to overwhelm the body. She takes the 12.5 mg Iodoral- Iodine/iodide mixture daily, good muli-Vit, Omega's, probiotics, 5,000 Vit. D, immune boosters. and I try to give her a higher protein than carbs diet which also helps healing and growing, etc. With gluten issues, you will always have a healing process of the gut. One of the signs she needed the Thyroid help of iodine is that she was always cold- huddled up in a blanket, and seemed to be getting really pale, almost bluish tone of her skin. So those are big red flags for her thyroid. The need for Adrenal support comes from the saliva test, and it also showed the immune anti-bodies to gliadins, or gluten. So her gut had little anti-bodies but what was there was HIGH on the gliandin anti-body. And her cortisol is low in the morning so she can't wake up and high at night so she can't sleep! plus adrenal fatigue.... and it messes up her blood sugars.... and I think it must precipitate a lot of the headache issues. On my own I am adding extra support for her adrenals and to help her daily cortisol rhythm to normalize her sleep cycle. I added extra magnesium, vit. C, liver detoxification support, and an adrenal gland complex in morning and noon to stimulate adrenals, plus iron which is needed for something with the thyroid. I guess her doctor does not want to overdo the extra help as she is still growing and you wan the stimulus to be on the glands working properly. But I think the extra Vitamins and minerals would just build up the bodies' levels and promote the healthy working of the thyroid and the adrenals. I hope that your daughter's issues are mostly due to the food intolerances, and that with time and good healthy food she will not have to deal with this for years!!! I wish we would have found out more sooner... On 2/9/2011 8:04 PM, Lori@... wrote: I might have to look into doing the same thing. Guest guest
I think you can read about the gene test at celiac.com....you can also go to the site gluten sensitivity online as well. The Gluten Connection (book) by Sher iLeiiberman expins all about gluten sensitivity and the other gluten issues that "science" hasn't explored yet. I have had the gene test and I am definitely not Celiac. If you want to make a real diference inyour child's life, find a good naturopath (recently trained)....www.naturopathic.org they are trained in functional medicine and understand nutribiotics so you don't waste money on ineffective solutions and things like iodine which may complicate the issue. My root cause of my sensitivities and failure to thrive were never going to be addressed by regular medicine. There are many other food molecules that are like the gluten molecule and this compounds the problem.Joan I did notice her growing more since she went gluten free. Hypothyroidism could also account for delayed growth and thin hair. You can have DNA testing done for Celiac that doesn't require going back on gluten. My daughter's TSH was a little over 5 when she started on iodine. She went soy free first, then gluten free and within about a year and a half her thyroid test results were all at good levels.
