Hello all,

I'm new to this group, and I've been "listening" for a couple of weeks now. I was dx'd with Hashi's, multi-nodular goiter, and adrenal fatigue this past July. My naturopath has had me on a protocol to address my adrenals, to bring my very low ferritin up, and started with a very low dose of iodine to support my thyroid. Not on T hormones yet, though I've been on progesterone for about six years. I had lost 35 lbs before Christmas, gained about 5 with holiday food (though I'm off gluten), and now I can't seem to lose a pound! I started in earnest with iodine on December 31st and am up to 3 tabs/day of iodoral. She had put me on iodine in September last year, and I crashed in October and stopped taking the 7.5 mgs she put me on. Then I read Dr. Brownstein's book re: iodine and put myself back on it. I'm taking C, selenium, a prescription B, magnesium citrate and trying to remember the salt (himalyan) - I take about 1 1/2 tsp. day in water plus cooking. So far I've only had mild detox symptoms, if you're not counting the weight gain. I'd really like to shift this weight! Any suggestions? I've also read about taking bentonite clay internally to help with detox. Has anyone done this?

Best regards,

a

Hi a,

Welcome to the group! I'm just learning a lot myself and I'm not able to answer the question about the weight, though, I am certain someone will for you. :-)

I've read several posts about "crashing". Can you explain what happened? Also, is magnesium citrate the best form of magnesium to take? I'm not certain if mine is actually citrate. I do have a calcium/magnisum citrate together and wondering if that would be better to take.

a-- Weight gain or weight stagnation is usually said to be an issue of

detox pathways not working well enough. You may well need more iodine in

your case because 37.5mg is not that high a dose. You might also want to

investigate detox regimens.

It's better to take your magnesium supplement as a separate supplement (or

use magnesium oil and also take epsom salt baths), because calcium is much

more available in our diets than magnesium is, so it's more important for

most people to supplement with mag than with calcium. Mag Citrate is a

good bioavailable form. So is Magnesium taurate, magnesium glycinate

(reputed to be less likely to cause diarrhea), and some others. However,

magnesium chloride is actually the exact form that the body has to change

any other form of mag into, so if you take that form it's the most

efficient. It also tends to be more expensive. I mostly take mag

glycinate and use the mag oil and epsom salt baths.

Thanks for the info on magnesium. I would like to find a good form of mag that doesn't cause diarrhea. I am trying to slowly build up to 50 mgs of iodine - a little scared to jump in all at one time! I would like more info on detoxing, which is why I'm looking at the clay, and also reading more about salt-loading.

Lori, what I call a crash, was when I went from a state of slow improvement to going back to more profound fatigue, brain fog and anxiety, constipation, eyes so dry they hurt, and hair coming out by the handfuls. Maybe that's not really a "crash," but it felt like going back to square one after I had had two months of improvement before she added the iodine to my regimen. After reading Dr. Brownstein's book, I felt like maybe I was detoxing, so I started back on the iodine with all the supporting supplements. I have seen a great improvement in my fatigue levels since mid-January. I have not had to take a nap (or 2 or 3) every day, and I've been sleeping through the night more nights than not.

This group has given me so much to think about. What a huge amount of information! As one gal said, *brain explosion*! Thank you all for sharing.

Welcome to the group a! I

am right in the middle here of possibly being diagnosed for adrenal issues but

I definitely have a multi nodular goiter that every endo I see wants it removed.

I have an u/s and fna scheduled for March and many new blood tests ordered.

So, we shall see. I was on two tabs of Iodoral, jumped to three then four

quickly with no detox issues at all. I seemed to have had them on just one tab

in the beginning. They were rough but held at bay with the Celtic Sea Salt

drinks,

I am trying to lose five pesky pounds too, but am not doing too much too soon

since I believe my adrenals are just ready to up and leave me. I am gluten

free, organic and going to begin smaller meals of raw foods. I love my non-soy,

non gluten, non dairy raw protein drinks that I mix with small amounts of immune

boosting juices.

Do you do the right amount of supplements too? I know I was taking way under

the recommended amounts, but I was on a low amount of Iodoral. I am going to up

my iodine myself but I have NO hypothyroid issues nor am I Hashimoto's.

I take the mag citrate (now brand with glycinate & malate) at night. I take the

opti-zinc every other day (because of the copper).

To help my adrenals, I do 30 minutes of infra red saunas twice a week.

Licorice teas and breathing to relax. Looking into yoga and tai chi as well!

Good luck and good health to you!

Transdermal application avoids diarrhea almost entirely, but I have found

that I can still wind up with loose stools if I overdo it, there just is

nothing else to attribute it to. But the magnesium oil and epsom salts

baths are excellent.

Swanson's Vitamins has the best deal on mag oil, but you can also buy the

magnesium chloride flakes and add water to make it yourself (mag oil is a

misnomer-- it's only water, but is slippery like oil because the mineral

makes it slippery).

I'm going to try the baths soon - sounds wonderful! I just ordered some from Swansons. I bet it would be very helpful for my little girl as well and even ael (with the diabetes).
