Guest guest
You all need to get an Iodine Deficiency test done prior to taking any supplements. You need to establish exactly what your iodine count is first! http://www.nutri-linkltd.co.uk/2010/03/05/thyroid-and-iodineiodine-testing-and-supplementation-some-tips/#more-1593 http://www.hakalalabs.com/testing.html It is essential to get a test done so that you know exactly what is happening with your thyropid. Medics currently do not offer this screening service. We all need to raise this as an issue with our respective health authorities. Guest guest
That's why you may want to start with a product like TLC (www.purezenhealth.com ) or Metagenics Ultra Clear Plus. But for me that didn't take care of it. My gall bladder needed a cleanse. It felt like I had a softball under my rib cage all the time. Guest guest
Dr Know If I waited to get an Iodine Deficiency test done prior to taking the Iodoral I would never ever be able to go on it. Guest guest
Oh, yes. I plan on doing it when I can. Lots of us are having heavy duty financial issues. Keeping us in supplements is a challenge. The DO I go to for my thyroid is not open to iodine or detoxing. He just prescribes my compounded dessicated thyroid meds. My daughter's doctor is good for some things, but not thyroid, adrenals, or iodine. I can't seem to find a doctor who knows this stuff and takes medicaid since she is on the waiver. Periodically, I keep looking. None know as much as much as this group. And, the only one who is open is the naturepath who cannot order tests in this state and my daughter's chiro. In an ideal world, I think we all would get the testing we need. But, in the real world, we do what we can.Debbie> From: W <coralskies@...>> Subject: Re: Weight Gain/Detox Issues with Iodine> iodine > Date: Saturday, October 9, 2010, 7:18 AM> Sorry I'm answering this late...my> hubby just came home from the hospital and I'm catching up.> > Pam,> > I'm glad you mentioned that liver cleanses aren't for> everyone. Guest guest
Excuse me, DK, all of a sudden you've appeared on this list and keep insisting on this, and it's not true. Iodine first of all isn't going to hurt someone, as was noted earlier today it washes out of the body what isn't needed. Dr Brownstein estimates that 95% of people in the USA are deficient in iodine. So the official stance on this issue on this list is that while it's nice to have the test as a baseline, it is not necessary to test before supplementing. -- >You all need to get an Iodine Deficiency test done prior to taking any >supplements. Guest guest
Hi all, OK, here goes, I wasn't suggesting that a test has to be done. I think more importantly here is that we are all suffering with some form of thyroid breakdown, some worse than others. I'm not suggesting that we should pay out for a test unless we want to just confirm the actual status of our iodine levels. It would be good just to know so that we can keep a check on it. How we establish our iodine levels is difficult if non of the medics want to listen let alone suggest a test to find out how bad this iodine deficiency in each individual person. I myself woul like to know how bad my iodine level is prior to taking supplements as getting the right dosage is important. I do not wish to be put on a life long prescription for something that hasn't been tested for. We all have blood tests done over a period of time, so why not have a test done juct to clarify the situation? I am planning on getting my whole family tested (we can't afford this either, but surely in the long term it is better to pay once for a test than live an eternity of drug taking?) so that I can order in the correct supplies required to get us back to normal functioning. There is a lot of differences on the amounts needed to be taken so a correct diagnosis surely is needed? Your call, you choose how you go forward with this deficiency, but I feel to find out where my immedite family stand on the levels of iodine currently are is required as we have already lost one mother for my 2 step children and to lose another even as a step would be irresponsible. Guest guest
D, From what I understand, the iodine test is an indication of iodine deficiency, but only an indication. That is, the body may be excreting a very high amount of iodine not because it doesn't need it, but because it is too overloaded with toxins to make use of it.  Furthermore, the test will not make clear exactly what dosage is needed. Some people who are in great need of massive amounts will only be able to tolerate very small amounts. So, as suggests, it is best to go by feelings: do you feel sick and do the symptoms that trouble you match with a profile of thyroid problems? Try the iodine. Experiment with how much you can tolerate. When you feel great, reduce the iodine to a maintenance dose. On 10/10/2010 3:20 AM, Dr Know wrote:  Hi all,  OK, here goes, I wasn't suggesting that a test has to be done. D From: Baker <vbaker@...> To: iodine Sent: Sun, October 10, 2010 3:58:57 AM Subject: Re: Re: Weight Gain/Detox Issues with Iodine  Excuse me, DK, all of a sudden you've appeared on this list and keep insisting on this, and it's not true. I have LOST over 35 lb since mid June. I don't know how much because I don't weigh unless I have to and the last time I had to was a month ago so I could do my heavy metals test. They needed to know my weight so they could prescribe the correct amount of DMSA. For me, the ticket is (as with everyone), to keep your insulin levels low. Insulin triggers your body to either store fat (if insulin is high) or release fat (if insulin levels are maintained at a nice steady level). Also, I had to treat candida before seeing any real progress. I did that with diet (next to no carbs for 3 months), and supplements (GSE, Candex, Yeast Defense, and a couple of others I'd have to look up). I feel a thousand percent better and I know I'm continuing to lose weight because I can feel it in the way I move and how my clothing fits. Which is to say, it doesn't any more and I've had to go down another size. Yea! Hope this helps. Guest guest
Are you trying to claim that not getting an iodine test, or using iodine without testing, could lead to death? You seem to be saying that it would be irresponsible to take iodine without testing, and if so that is purely your opinion only, it has nothing to do with the actual facts or practice. If you're interested in learning about iodine, I would suggest stopping it already with the " must test " obsession and learn some of the facts. -- >Your call, you choose how you go forward with this deficiency, but I feel >to find out where my immedite family stand on the levels of iodine >currently are is required as we have already lost one mother for my 2 step >children and to lose another even as a step would be irresponsible. > >D > > >From: Baker <vbaker@...> >iodine >Sent: Sun, October 10, 2010 3:58:57 AM >Subject: Re: Re: Weight Gain/Detox Issues with Iodine > > > > >Excuse me, DK, all of a sudden you've appeared on this list and keep >insisting on this, and it's not true. Guest guest
I'll be checking in with my new MD/doctor of Chinese medicine about gentle liver cleansing while she keeps an eye on my adrenal fatigue (Cortef) and hypothyroid (1/4 grain of Armour which needs to be increased this Friday). I'll be sure to post anything of interest she might convey. Lemon juice in water is supposed to be a good way to support liver detoxification, isn't it? And drinking lots and lots of water is supposed to help the liver. I got up to 1 1/2 liters plus two big mugs of ginger tea and a fiber drink per day. But being away from my usual schedule while my hubby's been sick, I haven't been drinking that much. The odd thing is that I was taking a very pure form of milk thistle and dandelion root for liver support and recently stopped when I landed in the hospital a couple weeks ago. When I stopped those two supplements, MOST of my side/liver ache went away. Now what does that tell me? The iodine is definitely helping. I'm up to 31.25 mgs per day. I developed a sore in my left nostril and my upper lip swelled up and I got the most unusual cold sore on the middle of my upper lip. My belly is so bloated that I look pregnant at 53 years of age. I think this is all a form of detox. > > My acupuncturist/ND has always said that I'm sensitive and fragile and he's > afraid the oil/citrus liver cleanse would be too harsh on my system. Guest guest
For us gallbladderless gals, I was told that it is important to eat three separate meals...no snacking...a day at as close to the same time of day as you can get in order to " train " your liver when to release bile into the small intestine for proper digestion. Otherwise our livers drip, drip, drip bile and that harms the small intestine. I don't know if this training routine really works. But I'm no longer a snacker. That mention of SLUDGE in the report from the endoscope really sent me for a loop. Who wants sludge anywhere inside of them??? > > Wow, . I don't have a gall bladder either. I bet that is why my liver got overloaded when I tried that so-called gentle detox for me. > > Debbie
Guest guest
As one coward to another (love your posts Anne), I took malic acid for a long time, but never got up the nerve for the actual cleanse. I just can't shake that painful memory. I'm seeing a new doc and maybe she will have a middle of the road solution for me. You're so right. The softening is a big part of this cleanse that I think gets underappreciated. > > Well, the point is that the cleanse is designed to relax the ducts & > soften the stones so they don't get stuck that way & cause that kind > of pain... Guest guest
I SO agree with you Steph. I have " felt " hypothyroid for seven years (probably longer, but have experienced a pronounced decline for the last seven) and my test results have consistently come back within normal range. Finally my tests are now beginning to reflect hypoT and I finally found a doc who will prescribe thyroid and adrenal meds (need both according to tests). I can't help but think I could have avoided so many problems and so much debilitation if medicos were still treating their patients based on clinical symptoms rather than where they register on the bell curve of life. I watched both my maternal grandmother and my mother suffer in this way too. I'm not a fan of testing. > > We have become so dependant on testing. Years ago there wasn't all the testing we have and people went by how they were feeling. > > Steph
Guest guest
Hi Yes, lemon water is good for the liver but not an effective way to detoxify. Milk thistle seed and dandelion root and leaf are also great for support and even detoxification (although it will probably be a slow process if used by themselves). However, if one is going to effectively cleanse (which means getting rid of stones) they should be using something to soften or break-up the stones to avoid concerns with the passing of stones. Good choices would be malic acid (doing the liver cleanse with organic apple juice will supply this); wildcrafted herb Chanca Piedra or with a product called Super-Phos 30 (Ortho-phosphoric acid). Guest guest
In some ways, it was the good old days. I know, that testing can be good and even necessary at times. When I have gotten testing for me or my daughter, I often have to fight for the tests I want and don't always win. And, too often when there is testing, the doctors do not understand optimal levels. Too many seem to have the viewpoint of one size fits all. We are all different. Thank God for the internet and groups like this one. Even tho, I often feel like a lab rat! ;-) Debbie From: ladybugsandbees <ladybugsandbees@...>Subject: Re: Re: Weight Gain/Detox Issues with Iodineiodine Date: Saturday, October 9, 2010, 9:28 PM It is not necessary to get an iodine loading test before taking iodine. I took iodine for almost a year (50 mgs) before doing my first test and I was fighting thyroid cancer. It's nice to have the info but not necessary. Getting well is the goal. Re: Weight Gain/Detox Issues with Iodine Dr KnowIf I waited to get an Iodine Deficiency test done prior to taking the Iodoral I would never ever be able to go on it. For me- and many others I'm sure- that is not an option. My health situation has reached that pointed where I needed to address the root issues or face a very grim future. Would have been great to have my doctor alongside me but that is wishful thinking- so I will listen to my body, read all I can and dialogue with others who are on this journey to restore our health.Kathy> > > >> > > >> > > >> > > > So I gained weight almost immediately when I> > started iodine last January. Guest guest
For those of us who have gained weight with iodine/detox, does anyone know if the weight gain issue would be more likely to occur at lower or higher dosages of iodine? I posted a few days ago about starting back on iodine after abandoning it a few months ago due to weight gain...I recently found some supplements (chlorella, coriander, yellow dock) that helped get rid of most of that weight I gained, which I assume was related to an inability to flush out toxins. I just started on iodine again two days ago, and I'm feeling MUCH better than I have lately. I'm taking about 30 mg of Lugol's daily. I'm interested to see what would happen if I raise that amount, but I'm terrified about the prospect of weight gain again, and I don't know if that risk may be intensified by a larger amount of iodine. I don't think I've ever taken more than the 30 mg daily. Guest guest
If the problem really is overtaxing your liver, then lower amounts of iodine should reduce the rate of detox, & that might help your liver to keep up.AnneOn Oct 11, 2010, at 4:23 PM, lookonthebriteside wrote: For those of us who have gained weight with iodine/detox, does anyone know if the weight gain issue would be more likely to occur at lower or higher dosages of iodine? Guest guest
Thanks, Anne...I was thinking it could be the case that a higher dose of iodine might be able to force the toxins out more smoothly...I was sort of hoping that might be the case because I was anxious to try a higher amount given that I feel better...I was hoping to feel even more better on a greater amount of iodine, but I don't want to risk the weight gain again any more than I already am.
