Guest guest
I have posted about this before but again I want to ask to see if anyone has any new ideas now! I have worked up to 50mg/day of iodine twice now. I backed off for a month or so down to 12.5-25mg/day to see what would happen. Both times now I have experienced weight gain (approximately 10lbs) on the higher dosage. When I backed down my dosage I lost a few lbs. I wish I understood this! When I had my short consultation with Dr. Flechas he suggested I might have other nutritional deficiencies and that I need to be on a good multi - which I was. But he suggested Optivite so I am now taking that in case it is special in some way ... I am also taking all the recommended supporting nutrients + some! I am inclined to put up with the weight gain as the higher dosage also seems to be helping my long-time symptom of constipation. I think it must be helping my thyroid for it to be having this action (because my diet, fluids, fiber, healthy oils etc have been good for a long time). And this gives me hope it might eventually help my other symptoms. When I reduced my dosage I again had to add about 1000mg extra of magnesium on top of my normal dosage of about 650mg that comes from my multi and buffered C in order to not be constipated... Any ideas? Thanks! Marlena
Guest guest
My gut tells me that it is inflammation that is causing your weight gain. I can gain up to 5 lbs after eating gluten and then lose it the next day. Dr. B tested me and told me I had a high inflammation level and that I needed to stop eating gluten. I have not had an issue with weight fluctuations since. Just a thought that you may be pumping out more toxins than your body can handle. Guest guest
That is very interesting! About 1 year ago I was tested for gluten antibodies and the test came back negative. Although I had been avoiding gluten for years before that actually, because of more 'energetic' types of tests that various practitioners did. So I began to eat gluten again after the 'scientific' test said I was not allergic. I wasn't able to notice much of a difference so continued eating it until recently, when I stopped eating it at my breakfast meal, I thought that I might be a little less tired so I've continued to not eat it for breakfast but occasionally, less than 1/ week, I have been eating it ... Do you have an opinion about the antibody test and its accuracy? Could it be I did not have antibodies because I had avoided it for so long and if I had the test done again after ingesting it - that could change the results? Last year I did gain weight after introducing gluten into my diet again, but I attributed it to something else, especially because I lost the weight and I was still eating gluten and did not gain more weight again until the increased iodine ... but I will contemplate it further for sure because I do feel there is something about gluten ... I will avoid it altogether for awhile and see if it affects my weight. I am pretty certain I have high inflammation in my body for other reasons, if not a gluten allergy or sensitivity, because I had various tests done regarding being exposed to toxic house mold - which creates a lot of inflammation in the body, which eventually damages the hypothalamus. At the end of your post you wrote that the pumping out of toxins too fast can cause the weight gain? Because detoxing causes an inflammation response which can show up as weight gain? Hmmm do you think I should cut back my dosage and detox more slowly? Thank you very much for your response and your ideas. I am deeply grateful for all feedback! Guest guest
Hi Steph, Are you saying that if I am pumping out more toxins than my body can handle, that would create extra inflammation in my body, which might appear as weight gain? If so, would you recommend decreasing my iodine dosage, if I am already doing all the other supportive things that I know how to do for my detox pathways? Thanks so much for your ideas, Marlena > > My gut tells me that it is inflammation that is causing your weight gain. I > can gain up to 5 lbs after eating gluten and then lose it the next day. Guest guest
Yes that is what I am saying. Your body buffers it with water. I took Metagenics Ultra Clear Plus pH and that helps a whole lot. It is a liver and kidney support product. Guest guest
I just looked at this product and it looks good. I will try it as soon as I can. I like the idea of trying to facilitate my detoxification better as opposed to lowering my iodine dosage. Soon I will do another loading test & bromide test to see where I'm at ... Speaking of Metagenics, do you know anything about the Multigenics Intensive Care? To me it looks like just as good a multi as Optimox Optivite - if not superior in certain ways - for instance it has the natural folate in it ... Do you have a favorite multi to support iodine therapy? Thanks, Marlena > > Yes that is what I am saying. Guest guest
I have taken Multigenics but not the intensive care. I liked it OK. I currently take Biotics research Bio-Multi Plus. I really like that one. I think as long as they are high grade they will all do about the same. I feel better on Biotics stuff. If you avoided gluten for a long time before your antibody test, it would have been negative, even if your body does make antibodies to gluten. If you ingest enough gluten for long enough, say a month, that could change the results. Not everyone that makes antibodies to gluten has a positive blood antibody test. See stories on www.celiac.com about the difficulty of getting diagnosed with blood tests. A more accurate and earlier way to detect gluten antibodies is to determine if gluten antibodies are present in the intestinal tract. www.enterolab.com determines if gluten antibodies are present in a stool sample. Supposed to be superior to blood tests. A companion website is www.intestinalhealth.org Lynn

Guest guest
Lynn, I appreciate this information. I now realize the test I took was completely invalid!! It makes sense! -Marlena > > > Do you have an opinion about the antibody test and its accuracy?
