lugol's makes water potable?

Would anyone know if I can use Lugol's instead of potassium iodide to treat water for drinking?

I'm going to Asia for some volunteer work and usually bring potassium iodide to make potable water from questionable water sources where ever I go. But I don't have any on hand and wonder if I can use Lugol's instead?
