Joy.

Here's what I do (using D'Adamo's guidelines):

1) I take Dr. D'Adamo seriously when he says that " Rigidity is the enemy of

joy... " and to " start slowly, engaging in a learning process " (ER4YT)

I have eliminated the " red flag foods " from LR4YT, page 137,138, and then

pay attention (keep a food diary) so that I am aware of the reactions I have

to different foods that are on the " avoid " list, but not the " red flag "

list.

2) I take D'Adamo seriously when he says that 70% compliance is accaptable

for most people (and then I shoot for 90%). I use the mark of 90% by

calories, not by weight - and I'm a compulsive weigher and measurer, so I

have a pretty good grip on what I eat, by calories or weight. (note, the

coffee does not count, I limit that to one cup.)

3) I read the books. A weird kind of thing - dairy is an avoid, yet " LR4YT "

says that caucasian secretors can have milk and yogut up to 3 times a week,

and cheese up to 2 times. So, going by D'Adamo, if I want to have 2 ounces

of queso fresco on my salad two times a week, I can.

Another kind of weirdness is that even though oranges are an avoid, LR4YT

says (not that they should be eliminated) they should be used sparingly

(although I have largely eliminated oranges - except for this time of year

when blood oranges are in season - I had *one*)

3) Then, I look at the reason that foods are an avoid and more strictly

avoid those that have a lectin issue.

Take, for instance, my daily vice - one cup of coffee - sumatran, low acid.

Coffee for me is not a " caffeine event " , it's a social event. Yesterday I

had my coffee with a dear friend in our favorite coffee shop and spent

nearly two hours over that one cup, discussing men issues (the men issues in

my life are largely caused by teenagers). Of course I could have had tea,

or water, or pineapple juice - but I prefer coffee in this situation.

Knowing that coffee can ramp up acid production - I drink a glass of my

filtered water before drinking coffee - I add a teaspoon of baking soda to a

gallon of water. I have no symptoms of GERD and that is where D'Adamo

mentions coffee for type O's in LR4YT.

On the website, coffee is an avoid, but again, not for lectin issues. In

LR4YT, coffee is also, in one case study, the culprit concerning joint

inflammation. Again, since that's not an issue for me...

I don't use alcohol or tobacco (OK, I'll confess to a little cigar every

couple of months or less - and a glass of wine about the same). Coffee is

my vice, and yesterday I even had decaf...

As far a chocolate goes, dark chocolate has antioxidants - I buy bars of

Dagoba eclipse 87%. This bar has 10 segments, and 5 segments is a serving.

I have 2 segments a day. The ingredients are organic dark chocolate (87%

cacao - organic cacao beans, OG evaporated cane juice, OGcacao butter, .5%

non-GMO soy lecithin). At 87%, a half of a segment is like sucking on cocoa

powder...it's all you need to fill a chocolate craving, without the dairy,

fructose or other bad stuff)

Other than that, pretty much all I eat is on the beneficial or neutral list.

Exceptions are when I eat out (part of my job includes eating out with

students a couple of times a week and they generally choose a fast-food

place. My rule is that I will go out to a fast food place every other time,

then a " real " restaurant. We generally hit burger king, and I get a ceasar

salad (no croutons). Other places we go, I can get a breakfast (steak and

eggs, no bread) or omelette (meat and veggie). I can be *mostly* compliant

in these places.

And the only time I feel *really* deprived is when I feel like I can't have

a cup of coffee with my friends.

:) I don't know how you feel about it now, but it kinda sounds cute

and funny!
