Hi Marilyn,

I'm excited to hear about your improved breathing symptom! I have suffered with

that

exact symptom for about 4 years now! It's not asthma but similar, and I've found

nothing

that helps it! Even before I developed chronic fatigue, I had to quit dancing (I

was teaching

and performing) because my breathing got so bad!

Awhile ago I read in one book, can't remember the title now, that dyspnea can be

a

hypothyroid symptom! None of the doctors I had seen were familiar with that, and

I've

never heard of anyone else before you to describe this symptom! It's terribly

uncomfortable isn't it?

I still haven't had sustained improvement with it but I'm desperately hoping

that that will

come!

To answer your other question about reducing the dosage to a maintenance dose,

I've read

that many people can do that once they reach sufficiency, but some people,

especially

those with fibrocystic breast disease, feel better on at least 50mg

indefinitely. Have you

done the spot and loading test? That will help you determine your iodine levels.

Sincerely,

Marlena

I have no way to do the loading test. I have been to more than 1

doctor and can't find anyone who recognizes hypo by the symptoms.

I did do the spot test a couple of months ago and the spot disappeared

within 12 hours. (If spot testing means painting iodine on your skin

and seeing how long it lasts).

The breathing never kept me from activities, it was just always

uncomfortable, I just accepted that was how I was. It began in my

late teens and a doctor told me I was hyperventilating and treated me

like I was hysterical or crazy. So I never mentioned it to a dr again.

Why do you believe you have no way to do the loading test? That is not true. You can order one yourself. Here are the resources available to you:

The following list is a compilation of resources for obtaining the Iodine loading test. I recommend Hakala as they seem to have the fastest turn around time.Hakala Research885 Parfet Street Unit ELakewood, CO 80215877.238.1779

http://www.hakalalabs.com/servicesCall and ask for an iodine loading kit. It is $70 to do this test. It does not include return shipping.========================================================================================FFP Labs Dr. Jorg Flechas MD80 Doctors Drive Ste 3ville, NC 28792(1-877-900-5556)The cost of this test is $80. If it is not ordered by a physician you must tell them you are ordering it on your own and they will assign you to a nurse practitioner. When you get the results of this test you can receive a free consultation with Dr. Flechas. You may also obtain a urine spot test for an additional $30 for a total of $110 for both test.Spot / Loading / Bromide test can be obtained for $230===============================================================================Vitamin Research Productshttp://www.vrp.com/ProductPage.aspx?ProdID=9137 $100 for both the spot and loading test. • 1 month later...

it would be hard to take 5mg Iodoral b/c the tabs are 12.5mg but scored so you can break them in half. I give my 10# minischnauzers 6.25mg per day.

I have read that iodine docs think a therapeutic dose is 50--100mg.

Gracia

I had an iodine dosing test done recently and the doctor told me to take 5 mg of Iodoral daily. I will be in to see her in about a week at which time she'll go over my test results. Some places I've read on line talk like 5 mg is the maximum amount per day someone should take; however, I notice that some people here are taking 50 mg and more and discussing detox symptoms. Were those higher doses prescribed by your doctors, or are you going by a dosing schedule that is based on the results of your iodine loading test? If so, could someone direct me to it so I will know if my doctor is prescribing me correctly based on my iodine loading test. Thanks very much,

5mg of Iodine is a pretty low dose. Most people are on between 12.5-50mg. 100mg seems to be the upper limit but some people take even more than that if they are fighting cancer, for instance. You said you did a loading test? That's great! Get your results and post them here - we can help you to understand them. With iodine, It's not a bad idea to start slow to see how much detox reactions you have... But many people feel great right away! I recommend reading a few sites that were extremely helpful to me and will give you a lot of info about how to take iodine! Everyone is different. Make sure you are taking the supporting nutrients and doing salt loading as discussed in the links below:http://www.scribd.com/doc/1959949/IODINE-Solution-to-healthproblemshttp://www.breastcancerchoices.org/iprotocol.htmlhttp://www.naturalthyroidchoices.comMarlena--- In iodine , "largo_di" <largo_di@...> wrote:>> I had an iodine dosing test done recently and the doctor told me to > take 5 mg of Iodoral daily. Thanks, Marlena, for those links. I'll check them out, and post my

iodine dosing tests results as soon as I get them.

I got my results from my iodine loading test. There are several

numbers on here, so I'll post them all as I'm not sure which are the

important ones:

Iodine sample 1 PRE: 0.13 ug/mg cr (range 0.1 - 0.45 ug/mg cr)

Iodine sample 2 POST: 23 ug/mg cr & 32 mg/24 hr.(0.1 - 0.45 mg/24 hr)

% excretion/24 hr: 64%

Creatinine

Sample 1 PRE: 71 (35 - 225 mg/dl)

Sample 2 POST: 1400 (600 - 1900 mg/24 hr)

I made a mistake on my earlier post. I've been taking 1 tablet

(12.5 mg) Iodoral daily for the last 6 weeks and have a followup

visit with the doctor next Monday.

Should I be taking more Iodoral? If so, how much and for how long?

And then retest? If I should be taking more, do you move up slowly

to avoid detox symptoms? So far, I don't think I am experiencing an

detox symptoms. I do try to get in at least 1/2 to 1 tsp. Redmond's

sea salt daily.

Thanks for your help!!!

That's interesting, Marlena. Did you notice you felt a lot better,

or had more energy at 82% rather than the 70%? Is the percentage

number the only number on the test results that really tells us

anything?

I'd be curious what other folks on this board started out at with

their loading tests (percentage wise) and then how much Iodoral they

took, for how long, and what ending results were, and how much

difference they noticed in their health.

Thanks to all,

Doses range anywhere from micrograms to 200 mgs. Depends on what your issues are and if you have taken a loading test with bromide levels.

Iodine Dosing

How does one know how much iodine to take? I am hypothyroid and take 60mcg of cytomel.

Could it be that dosing Iodoral is weight dependent? That maybe one should dose

according to their weight? I am 5'9 " and 280lbs. Maybe I should be taking 100mg

instead of 50 since I have not experienced any changes, good or bad. Anybody

know?

I think Dr.Abraham once said that a person with more weight has a higher

requirement for Iodine. This sounds just logical because breast tissue and skin

are larger, so more is needed. however, I am not aware of a dosage per kilogram

formula. One could assume that the dosage is made for a average person of

70kg/154lbs and therefore calculate:

50mg/154lbs =0,32mg per 1lbs which in your case would be an estimated 90mg for

your weight. however, I did just make up this formula out of the blue so don't

see it as advice ;)

I respond way better to 100mg as many do too, and my weight is about 191 lbs. I

think it would not hurt to try, but don't forget selenium and salt loading.

I do not think this is right, that you should lower iodine dose if you

get symptoms of detox. actually you want to detox and there are ways

to minimize symptoms.

Well for me right now it is the intensity of the detoxing, the salt loading was not taking care of it over a reasonable period of time and I am taking all the other companion nutrients so I have to give my body the break it needs and move back up as I can tolerate, and I really have a pretty high tolerance for detoxing and herxing so I don't lower it on a whim for sure. In fact I tried going right back up after a couple days off an it knocked me on my butt LOL I still need to be able to function, so detoxing has to be at manageable levels. I think as I am coming out the other side of the subacute thyroiditis and my body is using the iodine better I am finding I am far more bromide toxic than I knew.
