Sheila,

You may have a clogged ink delivery tube. That can happen if you don't

print for a long time. I don't know if that is something you can repair

at home with a Q-tip and isopropyl alcohol, but it might be worth a try

before getting a new printer.

Hi Shelia,

I work in IT support. Did the cartridge have a protective strip that

you need to remove before fitting it, and did you remove it?

You could try taking the cartridge out and putting it back in again

(we call this 're-seating').

Other than that it is quite hard to troubleshoot without being there

in person.

You could also try turning the printer off and leaving it for a

minimum of 25 seconds (this is called a 'hardware reset') though I

expect you have tried that already if you have followed the

instructions in the manual.

Printers are annoying because they have a lot of moving parts and can

get dirty and clogged up with ink and bits of paper from when they

have had a jam.

They can be temperamental and sometimes reinstalling the drivers a few

times, and turning them on and off again a few times, can help.

Sometimes they just inexplicably start working again the next day.

If its still under warranty you may need to get it looked at.

Hope this helps,

Jane

Nope - everything smells fine. Everything looks fine, will try Chucks tip to see if that works , though somehow, it doesn't seem like that - but i don't know why it doesn't!

Hi Jane and thank you. The original cartridge had the protective strip which was removed, I had only used about half of the ink and printed something the other day, though it was a bit blotchy, which annoyed me. Today when it wouldn't work, I put in a new cartridge, removed the protective strip, and it doesn't work. I ahve turned the printer and computer on and off and reinstalled the printer again. Any other ideas ???

Hi Sheila

There's a tiny vent hole in the top of the cartridge that lets air in

when the ink goes out. Could the half used cartridge have a blocked

vent hole, likewise the new cartridge?

Sheila,

Have you tried going to the website of the printer manufacturer and

downloading the latest driver? You can also download drivers from

driverguide.com

Then you can remove the printer completely, uninstall any software

and the instance of it under 'Printers' then plug it back in and use

the fresh driver when you install it again.

I would do that before I giving up, but it would be quite easy for me,

I don't know how comfortable you are with downloading drivers...

I don't know how likely it is to work but it always worth a try.

without being there to poke around inside it I can't really advise any

further. It sounds like there maybe be a hardware problem with the

printer in which case you will have to get it seen to, or replace it.

Home printers are not built to last these days. If you do get a

replacement one, see if you can get one that takes the same cartridges

that you already have.

Try cleaning the print head very gently with a computer wipe,

preferably the wet kind!! It may be that your printer has just died

completely, don't worry you can get a new one for £20!! You can get a

3 in 1 printer/scanner/copier for £30,

I had a refill deal going with my ISP, I sent them ink cartidges and

they filled them with genuine ink from the printer maker. The very

first cartridge I got back must have been damaged, now when I have used

about half the ink in the cartridge, my printer refuses to print and

tells me I have the wrong cartridge in!!

I think that is a bit beyond me Jane - the problem with me is that there are simply not enough hours in the day. theepsom D68 I have been disappointed in since I bought it. Unlike the printer I had before, it goes through the ink cartridges so fast. I am finding this quite expensive, because I often have a lot to print off. What printer would you recommend (around the £50 mark) - and then I will have to close this 'off topic' thread, or I will be getting my legs smacked *grin*.

Epson do a good 3 in 1 printer but have no idea of the cost in the UK.

Better to start looking for a new one than mess with what you have in

my view.........

'and then I will have to close this 'off topic' thread, or I will be

We wouldn't do that to our esteemed leader S.

Hi Sheila,

Depending on what you print try looking at the H.P. printers. The

cartridges are fairly cheap and if you order from somewhere on the net

such as KC Inks then you will get them even cheaper. I've always used

Lexmark but the cartridges are pricy, (the print head is on the

cartridge not the printer).

Canon Pixma iP4500 Printer. £79.96 excellent make and the paper feed

is at the back which means that you can use continuous paper or thick

photo paper.

(Front loaders have problems getting thicker papers round the roller

feeds)

Canon PIXMA iP2600 Inkjet £34.99 great printing resolution and

reasonably fast.

HP DJ4360 Inkjet Printer. £59.79 also fast printing and high resolution.

The last two also have deals on them for cheap cartridges at Argos.

Hi jane and everybody.

I had to go out this morning before I gave anybody a chance to respond regarding printers. However, I purchased (on recommendaiton) the

Canon Pixma iP 3500 Advanced Single Ink Photo Printer.

I hope to get this fitted up tonight so I can write to the GMC.

Luv - Sheila

Hi Here's a very good value printer - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-PIXMA-210-Photo-Printer/dp/B000UXAORG/note that you get £15 chequeback too, so it is only just over £20 andalso free delivery. My boyfriend's brother just bought this one. Theyare both computer boffins (even more than me) so it must be a good one.Jane
