Vicky,

My first suggestion is to get him to a DAN doctor as soon as possible. DAN stands for Defeat Autism Now. You can find out lots about treatment options and a doctor in your area at the Autism Research Institutes Website http://www.autism.com/ari/

There are many biomedical treatments (including diet, supplements, yeast treatments, chelation etc) and testing available that you will not find with your Pediatrician. They are finding that many of our kids have been damaged by vaccines (did your son regress after the mmr?). There are also many younger kids recovering fairly quickly with these treatments. My own son is soon to be 11 and is making great progress with these treatments. Unfortunately these options were not around when he was first diagnosed or who knows where he'd be by now.

My second suggestion is to insist on a VBA (Verbal Behavior Analysis) program for your son. It's similar to ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) but really brings out the language and kids are actually happy to learn and there are behavior plans that can be done. You can find more info at www.drcarbone.net and www.verbalbehaviornetwork.com If you can go to one of Dr. Carbone or associates workshops you will be glad you did and will come away with knowledge of things you can do with your son.

If that speech therapist is not familiar with autism or vba/aba, insist on another from your early intervention provider/school district.

Don't despair there's lots out there.

Hello everyone, I am vicky . I am 37. I have a 2 year 1 month old lovely boy, Tony who has been diagnosed to have autism. I am single. I have been finding his behaviour different to his cousin of the same age. I was afraid to have him checked. Finally, I picked up the courage to have him assessed. I am told he is demonstrating features of Autism.

It is a struggle with him. I am struggling, that's when I found this group on a net search. I would be most appreciate advise:

i) He used to say many words when he was 14 months old but all these have disappeared. Now he only says mama

ii) He is running about all the time. He is fidgety and easily distracted.

iii) He is in a world of his own.

iv) He likes to spin himself, He plays "yo-yo" repeatedly with strings and the towel. He loves to arrange bottles and boxes in a row. He is picky with food. he mouths almost anything that he gets hold of. He wakes up in the middle of the night and plays by himself.

v) He hits me every now and then.

Where do I start???

He has been referred to a speech therapist. She is not able to sit him. I feel she will give up on him.

How would I know if he is low or high functioning?

How do I get to sit him? He is so active. I am not keen to use medication.

How do I get him off his repeated behaviour?

How do I stop the mouthing?

How can I reduce his aggression towards me?

He needs a programme, how do I work out a programme for him."

Please help. I would appreciate any advise. I am at the end of my tethers.

I would suggest reading Let Me Hear Your Voice first. Your son's behavior is typical autistic behavior but there is hope with intensive one on one therapy. Another good book is The Me Book by Lovaas. Is there a university near you? Sometimes you can get students trained in ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) to come in your home and work a couple of hours wih your child for between $8 and $12. an hour. The earlier that therapy is started the better the prognosis. Depending on where you live, some school districts have early programs for these children. Pat K

Vicky, I'm Karac's grandmother. I diagnosed Karac when he was almost three. His mother allowed me to run an ABA program with Karac at my house for several years, but she would not learn how to work with him at home. Karac made great strides; it looked like he would achieve normal functioning, but when he was five she decided to put him in the public school and they refused to learn how to work with him. They refused to let me or my therapist come to the school and help. They suggested medication; so Karac's mother began a series of all kinds of medications. Today Karac is not as functioning as he was when he started school, and he has Tardive Dyskinesia as a result of the medication. I still have him seven days a week; I pick him up after school and try to do maintenance with the things he has been taught. Before he started to school I taught him all the self help skills, functional speech, reading with the Edmark program, math with a calculator, to ride a bike, play basketball with a neighbor boy, to ride a scooter, to be quiet in church, to write, to type sentences with one or two fingers on the computer, to color within the lines. Karac swims and loves going to equest. He is a very handsome 12 year old and it grieves me to think what he would have been able to do if he had had a different mother and father and if he had never gone to the public school. In the 6 years that he has been in the public school; he has had only one good school year. When he was in the third grade he had a teacher who was willing to come to my house and learn how to teach Karac. She and I would exchange materials, but she left the school district and after that things went from bad to worse. You are fortunate to be the mother and to have so much hope for the future. These kids are capable of learning so much when people learn how to teach them. They are so worth all the effort. I will never regret all the work that I put into Karac even though I didn't achieve my goal. I love him; he has blessed my life, and he always says, "I love you, too." Pat K

Hi Margaret,

More likely off food!

If

you stop T4 for 5 days then you will have about half the original amount in

your body ( half life) don’t stop the T4 for too

long or you will go downhill too far and make your eventual recovery slower. Follow

the advice on’ how to treat with Armour thyroid’ on the website.

Dear All,

I have been on Thyroid by Value Pharmaceuticals (1.5 grains am and pm) along

with Cortef (7.5, 7.5 and 5.0) since Sept....slowly worked it all up...

My Vit D, ferritin, Vitamin B12 Zinc, Selenium etc are all ok BUT my hair loss

is still profuse...

any suggestions, I am seriously thinking of having a saliva hormonal profile

done to check my hormones....but would this be skewed due to the Thyroid and

Cortef?

My profuse hair loss and thinning all started 5 years ago when my younger one

was born..being Indian I had lots of thick hair and it is diminishing

.....(thinning and loss)...I was wondering if anyone had any advise on what I can

do next...

Generally I feel 'well'...I do get adrenal type symptoms, If I do not eat

regularly etc but nothing to really 'report'.

Many thanks

Khush

Hi Khush

First, I would like to know exactly what the results were for y

our vitamin D, ferritin, vitamin B12, zinc, selenium etc were. Can you post the

results for each one together with the reference range as we need to know whether

they are at the bottom, the middle or the top of the range. Doctors have a

habit of telling their patients their results are " normal " if they

appear ANYWHERE within the range and it does matter where they appear.

Yes, the results of any hormone results could be skewed with

taking natural thyroid extract and Cortef. You would need to be off Cortef for

at least 2 weeks, and you should not take thyroid hormone replacement for 24

hours before having the 24 hour urine profile done.

There can be many reasons why we suffer hair loss and I wonder

whether getting a hair analysis check might help you.

take 200mcg of selenium.and get the hormone tests you mentioned done. it could

be as your adrenals are under par then this is having an effect on them. you

don`t mention you age.? this could also be a factor.! hope this helps. Angel

Your ferritin at 18 is too low, but I have to admit that I have

never seen a reference range for ferritin for women to be so low; It is usually

around 20 to 200 for women and for men 30 to 300. For women we reckon the

ferritin level is best around 90 in such a reference range, but I guess (and I

am saying 'guess') that your level in this particular range should be around 40

to 50. You need to take some form of elemental iron such as Ferrous Fumerate or

Ferrous Glutamate 200mgs daily, with high doses of vitamin C, around 3/4000mgs

daily to help with absorption and to stop constipation, but get as much iron as

you can from foods high in iron.

You should not take any thyroid hormone replacement on the

morning you are going to have your blood tested, otherwise the results could be

flawed. Take it with you and take it as soon as your blood has been drawn.

Luv - Sheila

thank you Sheila,

I will have more results in a week. I have 'upped' my iron. I just wanted to let

the group know just in case you have not heard of it..

Nature's Plus do a supplement called Hemaplex and it is perfect combination of

iron (85mg elemental iron) with the B vitamins and also Vitamin C....

I did lose alot of blood after the birth that I had a blood transfusion and

since then I have had this profuse hair loss...

Thanks again..
