Guest guest Posted November 24, 2008 Report Share Posted November 24, 2008 Hi to everyone who responded to my previous message ' the good, the bad and the ugly', Looks like I might have found the culprit that caused my extreme exhaustion, lethargy and foggy thinking since last week after I ate a thin slice of icecream cake at my daughters birthday. I had been on a really healthy diet prior to eating the cake (no artificial anything/no refined sugars/lots of vegies,good nutritious food etc), so I thought it might have been a reaction to the refined sugar. I went and saw my doc yesterday and he thought it was a classic response to gluten ingestion, but said that it could have been a reaction to any of the ingredients in the ice cream cake that I ate. I called the company who made the cake (who have supplied gluten free products for time immemorial) and found out that they changed their formulations about a year ago and started to add gluten. I didn't even ask them when I bought the cake, as I've bought their stuff forever and it has always been ok. Eech. I usually ALWAYS re-check ingredients, but on this occasion I didn't because I thought it would be fine. Lesson learnt. No wonder I felt so bad. It all makes sense now, and I can thankfully report that today is the first day in over a week where I am feeling pretty good. The gluten must have shifted through. Perhaps I also had a reaction to something else in the cake because the response was pretty extreme and debilitating. I was so concerned that my thyroid was playing up again, but it looks like it was probably a reaction to gluten. Whew. I even feel like I might be able to go for a walk again today, so things must be getting better. Thanks again for all of your responses before. They were really helpful. Once again , exactly the same thing happened with me. The company changed their supplier without me knowing and after being assured the product was wheat free when I first began eating it some while back (oats actually), including non contaminination on the production line, I couldn't understand why I started to feel bad again. It was only after a bit of detective work and a few phone calls that the company told me that due to the change over of supplier they could no longer guarantee the product was wheat free. I haven't eaten the oats since and my symptoms have disappeared. I don't assume anything anymore. It's just not worth feeling ill for days at a time. Lesson learnt here too! Yes, I am VERY relieved to have found out what was causing the exhaustion etc. I thought I was on a downhill slide again, but it was only temporary thank goodness.
