Here's the thing: I'm hypothyroid w/Hashi's. I have also been diagnosed with PMDD and "possible" peri-menopause and was, therefore, put on Yaz birth control to control my PMDD and peri-meno. My issue is that I already had a problem once with elevated potassium just taking 2 Advil. This was because of Yaz. So, I tend to steer clear of ANYTHING that has potassium because of it.However, I HATE taking them and am in a program that will, HOPEFULLY, get me off them. (I am more into 'natural' remedies than just going the normal routes that people take. To me, if something elevates my potassium levels THAT much, then there's something wrong and I need to change it.)Anyhoo... I am very interested in taking iodine. I'll be seeing my doctor soon (he's holistic/internal medicine). But, I thought I'd pose my question here and get your opinion before I go. So. My question is - does taking iodine elevate potassium levels or not? And, if so, does anyone know how much?

Please forgive my ignorance. What is BHrt? I've never heard of it!

....And thanks for the guidance. I've been WANTING to get OFF Yaz for various

reasons. And, if I have some sort of alternative, I'll be very happy. I'm not

even concerned as much with birth control as I am with my anger issues. There

are plenty of other, non-hormonal forms of birth control that are EASY to get.

Is it the vit k that elevates potassium?

Is there now a worry about bottled water and bromates?

We have well water that is healthy and tastes great.

But I sometimes do get the bottled waters at the store just if I am out and

about. Which one would be the lesser of the evils?

Lastly, Steph, what bh do you take?

Actually, iodine can raise potassium levels when combined with certain drugs. It

happened to me with Lisinopril. Fortunately, the iodine helped the blood

pressure more than the Lisinopril, so I stopped taking it.

Yaz information states not to take potassium supplements without consulting your

doctor and potassium iodide is in all the supplements. Does that equate to a

potassium type supplement? Iodoral states on its pamphlet to be careful with

certain blood pressure meds. The link below gives info also. When mine went

up, I researched it more.

Interestingly enough, I have low sodium and recently started including Celtic

Sea Salt to my daily vitamin regime. ...Maybe this will help. How long do you

think it would take of taking 1/2 tsp. a day of sea salt to affect my potassium

levels?

I am not sure. I tested low sodium/high potassium which surprised me

b/c I love salt. then I treated my adrenals with cortef and got enough

sex hormones, but I never did the test again. I did the 24 hr urine

test from http://www.antibodyassay.com (I can't find them on the

internet now) with my Broda doc.

Iodoral, my female hormones seemed to change. I didn't need to use progesterone

cream anymore, but I think my estrogen went higher, too. Is this possible and

how does it work?

Also, my hair totally stopped falling out. I always thought my hair falling out

was from low thyroid, but my thyroid values did not change at all on Iodoral

(except my TSH went up a bit.)

Every gland and mucosal lining needs iodine. Maybe it was ovaries that changed your hormones. I don't know. It seems for everyone hormonal changes are different. Most see an increase in progesterone not estrogen.

mechanism by which it actually makes your ovaries make progesterone?

No I don't know that. It was based on a bunch of us about a year ago that went to 100 mgs and we all had issues we thought was high estrogen and it turned out to be high progesterone.

Iodine has helped with my sex hormones also.

And I think that's what has helped stop the hair loss in my case as well.

Yes, I was excited about the hair loss stopping too!

I DID go hypo on Iodoral, but I think it wasn't really the iodine but my reverse

t3 problem. :-)

Iodine seemed to give me a boost of energy initially, but it also stressed my

adrenals.

I suspect it may have boosted my thyroid, but since I don't convert t4 to t3

properly, that may have been why I felt so hypo AND why my adrenals were even

more stressed. (I have adrenal issues.)

So...I'm in a quandry about taking iodine! I don't need more rt3, that's for

sure, but I would like for my hair to stop falling out. It's not so bad now that

I'm back on t3 meds, but I swear the iodine almost totally stopped it, which was

amazing.

I listened to a radio interview with Dr. Flechas. He said that he believes that

iodine upregulates many different hormone (thyroid, sex hormones, adrenal

hormones,etc) receptors which means that as a person becomes more iodine

sufficient, their receptors will be able to utilize the hormones more effective

and there bodies will require less of the hormone to have a normal response. He

found that patients were able to reduce the amount of supplemental hormones and

sometimes eliminate them altogether.

I recommend taking Thyrotrophin PMG by Standard Process. It may take a while, but it helps the thyroid function and the associated T3, T4 issues. I had that, but my thyroid function showed up normal after the Iodoral associated support supplements and Thyrotropphin PMG.

Interesting. As I said in another post, I did unfortunately go very HypoT on

iodine, but I had been off my thyroid meds for awhile, so maybe it would have

happened anyway. And no hair loss while being hypo doesn't even make sense (for

me), so maybe it's the other hormones being upregulated.

I guess I can always just try again and see.

I've taken that with no benefit, although if it helped you, that's great.

My thyroid shows up " normal " too. Normal is not always optimal. The lab ranges

aren't exactly very good. A mid range or higher t4 and t3 at the bottom of the

range is not good and not optimal and most people don't feel well with labs like

that. Like that is still in the " normal " range for thyroid labs.

I have done a lot of research on reverse t3 problems and I really don't think I

can fix it with glandulars as it's not a thyroid problem per se but what the

body does with the thyroid hormone I make. There are many causes, many of which

I've addressed. Basically, it's the body putting the brakes on more energy and

increased metabolism due to stress, illness, etc. I recently found I have

chronic EBV, so taking care of that may fix it. I'll see.

Low adrenals, low ferritin, low vitamin D and low vitamin B12 can all cause T4

to be shunted into RT3. There is one more, but I am drawing a total blank right

now. Once you fix that, you might try T3 only for a limited time to clear out

the RT3.
