Guest guest
Hi You will have to ask the GP for the reference ranges - blood results are absolutely useless without them. We and you and your doctor needs to know whether your results are at the bottom, the middle or the top of the reference range, or even outside of the range. S/he will give you these reference ranges for each of the tests. Then add these to your results and post them again. What has your GP suggested regarding your suboptimal FT3 and raised rT3? Luv - Sheila PS - he might do this over the telephone, so try that first. My tsh and t4 are very normal being respectivly below 1 for the tsh and 18.4 for the t4 but a private blood test shows subnormal t3 and raised rt3. I am hoping that the group could look at me results and give me an opinion.
Guest guest
Hi , You can do your own basic check for zinc by sucking a zinc gluconate tablet- if it tastes chalky you are low and if it is yech! Immediately the you are OK, but if a taste develops after 30 secs this is lowish. Try a month later after supplementation if needed and you will see what I mean! Zinc is best taken with copper 1:15 zinc. Subject: Vitamin levels... Hello, I asked my GP for the following tests - bone profile,b12/ferritin, copper, magnesium and zinc, and recieved the results as below but was not given the reference ranges and therefor am unable to see where the results are on the scale. My GP did say that they were all normal but that they wouldn't do a zinc test unless calcium was abnormal. My tsh and t4 are very normal being respectivly below 1 for the tsh and 18.4 for the t4 but a private blood test shows subnormal t3 and raised rt3. I am hoping that the group could look at me results and give me an opinion. magnesium 1.03 mmol/L Total protein 73 g/L Blood inorganic phosphate level 0.82 mmol/L Ferritin 50ug/L Calcium 2.43 mmol/L B12 239 ng/L Alkaline phosphatase 47 iu/L Albumin 47g/L Many thanks . ------------------------------------ TPA is not medically qualified. Hello all, Here we go then; Serum alkaline phosphatase 47 iu/L (30 - 115) Serum total protein 73 g/L (64 - 83) Serum albumin 47 g/L (35 - 50) Serum globulin 26 g/L (21 - 39) Serum calcium 2.43 mmol/L (2.20 - 2.60) Blood inorgan phosphate level 0.82 mmol/L (0.80 - 1.45) Serum TSH level 0.07 mu/L (0.20 - 4.5) Serum free T4 level 18.4 pmol/L (9.2 - 24.5) Serum vitamin B12 239 ng/L (145 - 684) Serum ferritin 50 ug/L (15 0 300) Serum magnesium level 1.03 mmol/L (0.70 - 1.07) My GP said that they were all normal except TSH as she had previously increased my T4 to 150ug. She has now decreased that to 1.25ug. My last thyroid function tests taken while on 1.25ug were as follows; THYROID STIMULATING HORMONE 0.94 mIU/L 0.27 - 4.20 FREE THYROXINE 19.4 pmol/l 12.0 - 22.0 TOTAL THYROXINE(T4) 111 nmol/L 59 - 154 FREE T3 *3.8 pmol/L 4.0 - 6.8 Thyroid Antibodies Thyroglobulin Antibody <0.9 IU/mL 0-4.9(Negative) Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies*54.5 IU/mL <9 (Negative) Thyroid Microsomal Ab (Conf) Titre of 1 in 400 (Low titre) Interpretation depends on TSH level REVERSE T3 *0.38 ug/l 0.09 - 0.35 Regarding my GP's response to low T3 and high RT3, she said that 'she' would say that my T3 was in fact normal and that if I had taken the test a few hours later or earlier then it is quite possible that the T3 would have been well within the normal range. She had not heard of RT3 but commented that these 'new' tests were not really of any relevance other than being interesting and that if RT3 was important then the test would be used by the NHS when needed. She has however referred me to an endocrinologist who I will be seeing next week. I'm not holding much hope after reading all the problems others in this group have had in the past. I am looking forward after my appointment when I can start taking my T3 to try and reduce the RT3 and then going on to Armour. I am really grateful for any help and advice you can give to me. Guest guest
Hi - your GP is incorrect in telling you that all your tests are normal apart from your TSH. Your ferritin level should be around 150 for a man so you need to supplement with some elemental iron such as 200mgs ferrous sulphate, or something similar. Spatone works well. you also need to take high dose vitamin C with any iron products such as 3/4000mgs daily. Do not take iron for at least 3 to 4 hours away from your thyroxine. Low ferritin and low vitamin B12 can be a cause of your thyroid hormone replacement not being absorbed properly. Your vitamin B12 is FAR too low and needs to be pretty well near the top of the reference range. If your GP refuses to prescribe B12, you can buy sublingual tablets from a good health food store. I personally use the Solgar brand 1000mgs daily. We have no idea whether or not your thyroxine is converting to the active hormone T3 at this time as this has not been tested. However, with the reasonably high Free T4, I would assume that it is not, and that any Free T3 test would show this to be low. Any chance of changing your GP - she doesn't seem to know much about thyroid disease, or is there a chance she could go on a 'refresher course' to get up to date? Luv - Sheila Regarding my GP's response to low T3 and high RT3, she said that 'she' would say that my T3 was in fact normal and that if I had taken the test a few hours later or earlier then it is quite possible that the T3 would have been well within the normal range. I will ask the endocrinologist if he can let me have some B12 - do you know if they prescribe tablets or is it an injection? Regarding present conversion of T4 to T3, I did actually just have a private blood test for T3 while taking 150ug of T4 and it was at 1.5nmol/L referance range 1.3 to 3.1 which is just within normal rangewhich suggests to me that increasing the T4 by 25ug was starting to help but 150ug of T4 was just not enough. One of the blood tests which I had done was 'Inorgan phosphate level' which was 0.82 (0.80 - 1.45) which also seemed to me to be a little low but you don't mention it in your reply. I am not sure what this tests other than being something to do with calcium, is it possible for you to explain what this test is for and why my level should be so low? Thank you again for your help, Regards, .
Guest guest
I would like to know why my Dr hasn't done a zinc test seeing as I am low calcium, and my son too, he is lower than me eek! What is it about calcium levels and zinc? Yes , it is because of the different labs we need the ranges to see how you are. Pity they didn't do a vit D. lotsa luv Dawnx
Guest guest
**Hi Thank you very much for taking the time to look at me test results and also for your recomendations. I will ask the endocrinologist if he can let me have some B12 - do you know if they prescribe tablets or is it an injection? **I think the NHS give B12 injections, but if they do prescribe B12 tablets, perhaps somebody will let me know*** Regarding present conversion of T4 to T3, I did actually just have a private blood test for T3 while taking 150ug of T4 and it was at 1.5nmol/L referance range 1.3 to 3.1 which is just within normal rangewhich suggests to me that increasing the T4 by 25ug was starting to help but 150ug of T4 was just not enough. ** This Free T3 level is low in the reference range. When taking thyroid hormone replacement, it should be well into the upper third of the range. You probably are not converting the mainly inactive T4 properly. You might feel better adding some T3 to your T4, or even swapping over to natural thyroid extract if this is possible where you get all the thyroid hormones your body requires. ** Your inorganic phosphate level does appear to be at the bottom of the reference range and I have not mentioned this because I know nothing about it. Perhaps Bob, our chemist is able to help you here. It is prescribed as Cyanocobalamin. She injects herself daily with 0.5ml. This is how Dr M recommends to administer it although your GP/specialist may what to do something different. judy
Guest guest
I think you'll find its a postcode lottery again. I read up on Cerefolin - B12 (combination folic acid and intrinsic factor) Tablets from US, apparently the Manchester area prescribe them on the NHS, I've not managed to find out if they are prescribed anywhere else. Cerefolin is quite expensive and the B12 injections cost around the £2. Guest guest
How about this? http://www.vitacost.com/NSI-Vitamin-D3-4000-IU-300-Softgels for $ 16.99 I know, it's not local ....but all you'd need is a good friend in the US to whose address the order could be send. All the ordering and paying for the items can be done on line, but it would be a crippling P & P to have the order shipped direct to the UK - but shipping within the US is only ~$ 5 . It's not too much to ask off a good friend to re-pack it into a Jiffy bag and to send it on..... up to the value of $ 40 or $ 50 (not sure about the exact amount, but $ 40 is "safe"), there is no VAT or customs to pay on a 'gift'... so it is even legal - Just a thought.....
