His football team won state this year so needless to say he is very active and never slows down. The problem is he catches every illness he come in contact with. He has had a cough and cold non stop since sept. He went to the doctor a month ago with walking pneumonia . Is this normal? I try to get him to slow down and relax but he just does not get it. He has spasms quite regularly. I hate this stupid disease. I'd take it from him in a heartbeat. > > Cullen's mom, > > >

With achalasia aspiration of food and drinks or even just saliva can cause aspiration pneumonia which may be from a different type of infection than the usual community-acquired pneumonia types. It is also possible that the irritation and inflammation of the respiratory system caused by the aspiration could cause an increased risk for infections. There are studies that report that patients with successful treatment for achalasia have a reduction in respiratory problems. Because medications for the infections can depend on the type of infection it may be good to remind the doctor about the achalasia and aspiration possibility. notan

Why would a person with GERD be given a myotomy. They need the LES tightened not loosened. Fundoplications (not necessarily a Dor) are done for GERD but not normally with a myotomy. notan

Also he should probably take the flu shot. Good suggestions to check out. The shot will not stop aspiration pneumonia but it could possibly prevent some of the infections. notan
